Stop it!

I just CRINGE anytime I hear people call it the iPhone 5. I've said it before and I'll say it yet again: the next phone will be Apple's sixth generation iPhone. There's no way in hell they're gonna put a 5 on what is their sixth phone. And now that the numeric surname has been dropped off the iPad, it's an even safer bet to say there will NEVER be an iPhone 5.

They'll call it the iPhone PooPoo before they call it the iPhone 5. Trust! :p

So, what was the second generation called? Oh yes, 3(g). And the third? Oh yes, 3(gs). And the fourth? Oh yes, 4. And the fifth? Oh yes, 4(s).

So your logic is stupidly flawed, as though you haven't really examined any of the evidence from the last few years. There are all sorts of arguments you're going to use - 3g wasn't a generation, it was a network thing, 4 was the fourth generation, etc. But to keep coming back with the same thoughtless comments, time and again, just gets people riled. Maybe that's what you're after. But next time, think before you speak, please?

The shame is, you're probably right in terms of it not being called 5, because they may well follow the iPad route and simply call it new. Or even 4G. And you'll go on and on and on about being right. But you won't be. It's like asking a 2 year old what the meaning of 3.1415926 is, and when they say 'It's a pie' you claim that they're super intelligent.

Stop it, please, if you want anyone to take you seriously on anything that matters.

Seems to be what happened with 3GS users and the 4S. Pretty sure that extra 5 month wait for them didn't hurt Apple much considering how well the 4S has been selling.

A smart organisation should be looking to please / keep its customers, i'd love for you to email Apple and ask how many customers it doesn't care about losing.

"The New iPhone" will be out around the October timeframe.

Ahh so you work for Apple and are providing us with facts now?

It'll be October or that kind of time - worked well for the 4S and they've made the transition now so why wouldn't they keep with that slot, just in time for christmas?

It's basically the old "new iPod" announcement slot, which makes sense since the iPhone has inherited that same niche.

Rushing something out in the summer doesn't make sense - they simply don't need to do it. The 4S (and headline features like Siri) will keep getting better with the next few updates, and it'll still be selling well into the autumn.

The only thing that even remotely makes any kind of sense in your statement is that it might just be called "the iPhone".

For your "6" logic to hold any water at all, the 4S would have been called the iPhone 5. Give it up kid.

Didn't you get the memo? It's no longer iPhone 5, 5s, 6, etc... its simply "iPhone"

Yup. The iPhone 5th generation already came out in 2011.

The iPhone 6th generation comes out this year. It will be called "The new iPhone" at release.

I'm hoping in the Fall as some rumors are indicating. I was a first time iPhone user with the initial release of the iPhone with Verizon therefore my two year contract will be up in Feb. of 2013. In the Fall allows sometime for me to see how the iPhone 5 is received and maybe I'll even be in line for an upgrade discount.

How so? There was never an iPhone 2 and they still managed to carry on with 3G/3GS and then the 4/4S. There's no more need for the iPhone 5 than there was for the iPhone 2.

Um...did you read your post before clicking on "Submit Reply"? You kinda answered your own question there, buddy.

AS YOU WELL SAID, the 3G was just a play on words because of the network thing. Then Apple felt if convenient to slap an "S" for the following generation because of the new iPhone's speed increase and since that was the company's 3rd phone, of course it felt right to keep the number 3 as part of the phone's official name. And then the iPhone 4 made absolute sense since it was the 4th generation iPhone. And since there was no new phone to unveil in October (and by "new" I mean a redesign), once again they found it convenient to slap an "S" on it, and at the same time keeping up with the pattern of 3G and 3GS.

So, given how the above paragraph explains clearly how each generation got its name, can you explain to me, then, how adding a "5" to the iPhone's name for the next generation would make any sense from a marketing standpoint, or why it would even be logical to call it an iPhone 5? What could possibly be so five-ish about the next phone, huh? The next iPhone would be the sixth one to be released, therefore making it more sense to call it iPhone 6 than iPhone 5. Not saying I expect it, but if it were to have a number attached to it, 6 makes a hell of a lot more sense than 5 -- WHETHER YOU LIKE IT OR NOT. YOU GOT THAT?

If you're going to have the audacity to call my logic 'stupidly flawed', you best be ready to provide some logic that actually makes sense! Don't just ramble on and on and speak condescendingly. That in itself is not going to make you shine any brighter if you yourself have nothing better to provide other than a worthless opinion.

The fact that it took you an essay to explain your logic behind naming the next phone the iPhone 6 shows just how flawed and convoluted your logic is.

Apple is fundamentally a marketing company... they market to everyday Americans-- Grandma's, soccer moms and like, not MacRumors nerds. The average mom doesn't have a memory of the past 6 years of iPhone iterations, they just know that there is an iPhone 4s. What is after 4? 5. It's that simple.. and Apple loves simple. They wouldn't skip a number... because that's ****ing stupid.

LOL, oh yeah, Einstein? It's "that ****ing stupid", huh?? I guess they were REALLY ****ing stupid back in 2008 when they skipped the iPhone 2. If they had no problem skipping over 2, rest assured they would have no problem skipping over 5. Trust.

Please have a seat and be quiet.

They didn't have a set naming scheme back then and the iPhone was not as popular.

iPhone
iPhone 3g(Marketed as new network)
iPhone 3gs
iPhone 4
iPhone 4S

What do you think comes next in the pattern? It's common sense. It's either 5 or they just do what they did with the iPad and stop naming it altogether.

I agree. People weren't expecting a numerical sequence that early on. But why would it have to be iPhone 5? What would be so five-ish about the next iPhone? It's definitely not the fifth generation model, and if they redesign it, it will be the fourth different style. If they add a 5 to it, the average consumer will just think there's only been five phones ever launched by Apple. Does Apple really want the public to think they've only launched five phones when in reality there have been six they can take credit for?

Again, I don't think we'll see any more numbers, but in my personal opinion 6 makes a hell of a lot more sense than 5. As you can see, many on here seem to angrily disagree but THEIR theory is that "4 is followed by 5", and that's about it. MY theory is that this is the 6th phone, not the 5th one. I guess we'll have to agree to disagree and go with the theory that makes more sense to us.

By the way, others on here could learn a little from you. You're a good example that one doesn't need to be rude and condescending to provide an argument or opinion.

It's not gonna be called the new iPhone, then what are they gonna call the update...the new iPhone..S?

Are you also a macdailynews reader?? :)

Since we've got iPad 3 in the mail, let's start the guessing game on iPhone release date. When do you think it's going to come out? My bet is October, but I hope June, although with Mountain Lion coming out in summer, WWDC may be more like Mountain Lion event and maybe iOS 6. What do you think?

Your username is AppleHater and you are concerned about when the iPhone 5 will be out? Interesting...

I've spent far too much time looking for something positive in this discussion, and this is the only thing that I can agree with, in everything you've said. But I don't believe that anyone would have bitten, and the language wouldn't be so inflammatory, if you simply expressed your opinion as an opinion, rather than a statement of fact.

A great quote that I've heard recently for the first time comes from your (assuming you're American!) 16th President:

"I do not like that man. I must get to know him better."

That's where I am.

By the way, in response to the original question, I really hope that the next iPhone will be released over the summer, with a full TV offering in the autumn, possibly alongside a smaller iPad. I support the argument that says summer is logical because of the iP4 launch date, and 24 month contracts. I don't believe that Apple would ignore the possibility of losing customers to the opposition during the few months after the end of contract, especially with upgrades often being offered 2-3 months before the end of contract, although those who bought at launch are probably the more fanatical and likely to hang on.

Anyway, I'm due an early upgrade in April, and will hang on, but I'll be getting more and more frustrated if it isn't launched in June/July!

There's no way in hell you know that for sure. I could right an anthology of incorrect predictions starting with "There's no way in hell" from people 10x as smart as you. Either the "New iPhone" or the "iPhone 5" makes more sense, IMO.

I do, however, give you props for the term "numeric surname"

I think they will release the new iPhone in September/October 2012 ready for the holiday trade. No 'numeric surname' which will then apply to all Apple products.
