- iPad Air will get M2 this fall.
- iMac will get M3 this fall
- iPhone 17 Pro models A17 / standard models A16
- iPad Pro models will get M3 in March 2024
- MacBook Air's will also get M3 in March 2024
- MacBook Pro's get M3 Pro/Max at WWDC 2024 June 2024
More likely the iPad Mini will get M2 this fall, the Air got updated more recently and it’s now like a non-iPad Pro alternative. Several reports of TSMC not faring well with 3nm so M3 is so 2024 now. Most 3nm production would be directed towards future iPhone as that needs a humongous amount of SoCs more then anything else Apple sells.

Why would you want that? I would like stage manager, but the screen is too small.
Because I want plenty of RAM for pro apps and semi multi tasking with stage manager.
8GB thus far have been available only with M-chips, hence either 8GB RAM or M series which come with 8GB standard.

Stage Manager on the iPad mini just wouldn't work well.

M3 (11.1" & 13" iPad Pro w/OLED) & M3 Pro (14.1" & 16" iPad Studio w/MicroLED) with hardware ray-tracing...?
Hardware ray-tracing doesn't mean much if there are no apps on iPad that use it. When M1 iPad Pro was announced back in 2021, plenty of people rushed to the stores thinking that Final Cut Pro for iPad will be presented very soon. It was finally revealed last week, less than a year before M3 iPad Pro is expected to launch.

I really like the fact that Apple keeps updating older devices - I think that's fair given the price with which they launched. But that also means that the transition to M1 has taken way longer than some probably wanted. Developers just haven't presented that many powerful apps for these devices yet - it will surely change in the future as more adopt M-powered models.

I wonder what iPadOS that abandons iPad Pro 2020 will look like...

I'm not seeing a whole lot of interest on Apple's part in the iPad. They still upgrade it to the latest chips, yes, but those chips are ridiculously overpowered compared to what the software supports and there's no sign of motivation to change this. They continue to increase iPhone size which actively erodes customer interest in having a larger screen available for home use. Stylus development effectively ended with the Pencil version 2. And the release of their touted Classical music app was conspicuously iPhone-only. This was particularly telling as one would expect most considered classical music listening of the kind that the dedicated app supports likely takes place at home. In the end I feel like the iPad was a Jobs passion (to create the computing device of the future) that Cook never resonated with (doesn't sell like the iPhone, and unlike the Mac isn't necessary to perpetuate the ecosystem).

From May 4th financials
Here’s how Apple’s individual product lines did versus StreetAccount consensus expectations:
  • iPhone revenue: $51.33 billion vs. $48.84 billion expected
  • Mac revenue: $7.17 billion vs. $7.80 billion expected
  • iPad revenue: $6.67 billion vs. $6.69 billion expected
  • Other Products revenue: $8.76 billion vs. $8.43 billion expected
  • Services revenue: $20.91 billion vs. $20.97 billion expected
The iPad product line is hampered by several aspects. Software equivalency depth of interface with pro applications versus Mac, as iPadOS has been complained about why the interface continues to be like a large iPhone with its rigid GUI in spite of RAM and storage increases and the use of M1/M2 processors. The fact that Apple knows that they don’t want the iPad to overstep the principle differences in its deployments versus iPhone and Mac usages. Look at the way it is marketed lately, where is the it’s a computer theme ads? The fact that like the Mac people use their iPads for years, so it doesn’t sell in greater numbers than their other lines. It also suffers from Apple paying too much attention selling iPhones and services as the Mac has suffered for the last few years. The example of classical app is painfully obvious, serious music lovers of that genre are more likely to use a Mac, iPad or a Apple TV to play content with their home audio setup then use the iPhone, but there are just way too many iPhones out there in comparison to ignore the obvious that Apple has way too much concern that anything will distract from the iPhone love fest so they don’t place the same priority of making apps available. Then there is the iPad strength with game playing, Apple is too much into Apple Arcade not promoting third party cloud gaming because of their privacy, store policy, and adversity to growing the gaming market except for their own profit. Yes I think all of us that use iPhones, Macs and iPads see this as Apple no longer placing equal importance on product lines as they should be. Since we are approaching WWDC 2023 we are once again looking for changes and improvements to iPadOS, will it finally happen?

The iPad lineup should evolve such that the current iPad Air design becomes the base model @$299, the air goes foldable, and the pro goes to a bigger size and includes additional/better stands and attachments.

From 4 days ago, still some relevancy.

The iPad is replacing the laptop–at an ergonomic cost

Portable and powerful, the iPad is in many ways the perfect replacement for the laptop, particularly when switching between home and office. As remote and flexible employment practices become more widely accepted, more of us than ever before depend on a slimline tablet for long-form work.

But an iPad isn’t a natural work companion unless accompanied by a well-chosen accessory. Held in the hand it causes arm strain; positioned too far away it causes eye strain; and coupled with many of the basic stands on the market right now – either keyboard stands, or stands designed for use with a separate keyboard and mouse – it can lead the user to hunch over, harming posture and potentially causing long-term back and neck problems.

I often wonder about this aspect as we discuss rumors of larger iPad Pros that people would utilize, that its becomes a lot more accessorize then how we normally use Macs and iPhones. :)

The article is an ad, so I wouldn't take anything it says at face value. But the topic is quite interesting.
it's pretty cool product actually and interesting topic as everyone is just hunching over their laptops, desktop, iPhones, etc. My neck hurts typing this. no joke.

Disagree on this. I think iPadOS has a great interface at its core, they just need to improve its functionality. It will always look like iOS to some degree because both devices use touchscreens. The question here is how to make it more MacOS-like without losing the feel of iPad? That's what Apple should be doing right now.

And it seems like they are, to some degree - Stage Manager, despite its uneasy launch, was rather a move in a right direction. Very interesting what they're going to show us this year - hopefully they have more in store than customizable lock screen with gay wallpapers

Stage Manager on the iPad mini just wouldn't work well.
With external display it's equally good and limited regardless of iPad's screen size.
I don't ever use Stage Manager with just built in screen.

Wouldn't have to be every year. Could be every other year but at the same time of year.
That sounds worse than what they are currently doing. We’re getting a new iPad Pro every 1.5 years. The events are usually announced beforehand, except last year when the upgrades were minimal and somewhat poorly designed
