When Will Apple Launch New iPad Pro Models?

I don't necessarily disagree with you, but I think 'sales volume' would be the answer to your question.
Good point, but iPad Pro sales don’t matter so much in terms of volume than being high-margin line of tablets.

For Macs though, clearly notebooks are a bigger priority than desktops (all notebook models have been updated with M2 chips), but it’s disheartening having to advise against buying say an iMac given it hasn’t seen an update in 2 years when there are supplies of M2 chips available.

I wouldn't. Isn't M3 coming this fall? The iMac and 13" MacBook "Pro" could get released with a new iPad Air.

I want something impossible, which is an iPad Pro with an M3 Ultra without a fan, or being thick. And the software.. It is getting better!
That’s just speculation. It’s also known that TSMC is having yield issues with the initial batch of 3nm processors. And without a doubt the priority for those will be given to iPhone 15 Pro models.

I just want a 16" iPad. Imagine running Final Cut Pro on that. Sheeeesh! 🔥
Hopefully not the one coming out soon.

It is now over six months since Apple launched the current iPad Pros, and with a substantial update rumored for the next-generation, when exactly are the new models expected to launch?

ipad-pro-2022.jpg

The current 11- and 12.9-inch iPad Pro models were released in October 2022, adding the M2 chip, Apple Pencil hover, Smart HDR 4, Wi‑Fi 6E, and Bluetooth 5.3 – another minor refresh like the fifth-generation iPad Air. The next-generation is shaping up to be a big update to the device, offering more advanced chip technology, new displays, and potentially a redesign.

With the current- and previous-generation iPad Pro models featuring M-series chips, and the 2022 refresh making the leap to the M2 chip, the M3 chip is the most likely chip to be included in the next-generation iPad Pro. The M3 chip is expected to be manufactured using TSMC's 3nm process, bringing the biggest performance and efficiency boost to Apple's chips in several years. The first Apple devices with M3 chips are not likely to appear until the second half of 2023 at the earliest, which seemingly rules out a new iPad Pro anytime soon.

Moreover, the main feature rumored for the next-generation iPad Pro is OLED – a display upgrade that has been rumored for well over a year. Dozens of reports from multiple sources are consistent that iPad Pro models with OLED displays are scheduled to launch in 2024, rather than this year. The OLED displays Apple is planning to use will reportedly be more durable and enable thinner and more lightweight device designs, and they could have slimmer bezels with the display size options increasing from 11- to 11.1-inches and 12.9- to 13-inches.

The iPad Pro has had the same design for four successive generations since 2018, and it looks like the device could finally get a redesign in its next incarnation. It is not entirely clear what the new design could look like, but a thinner and lighter device with a glass back or larger glass Apple logo to enable wireless charging seems plausible based on current rumors. The device could also switch from a default portrait orientation to a landscape design – a change seemingly supported by the relocation of the iPad mini's volume buttons and the latest entry-level iPad's landscape front-facing camera.

The iPhone 15 lineup is rumored to move to a slightly more contoured design with glass that curves at the edges on the front and back, so a similar design for the new iPad Pro is not out of the question.

The one thing that is clear about the next major iPad Pro update according to rumors is that it will not launch in 2023, meaning that the chances of a new iPad Pro models this year seem to be very low. Apple waited over 18 months between the 2021 and 2022 iPad Pros, and if a similar timeline was followed again, the next-generation iPad Pro would launch in May 2024. This approximate time frame also seems plausible in terms of what is expected from Apple's chip roadmap. All in all, the next-generation iPad Pro is likely just under a year away.

After get an M1 Max mbp and a m1 1tb iPad last year I don't see the need to upgrade for a while unless something drastically different or improved comes out. How much faster do people need their devices to be?

Those devices are overkill for pretty much every task. So yeah. I'm still on my M1 Air, but I'll be upgrading to the M3 when it comes out. I love that all of my Apple stuff are tax write-offs. 🥰

Not sure about 16", I think that would be too big for casual web surfing.

But I do have a 12.9 from 2017. That model features TouchID and was the last Pro before the re-design in 2018. It seems to me that because of the changes in the bezels they could theoretically release an iPad Pro with 14" screen in the same form factor as iPad Pro 12.9 2017. Not sure why they haven't gone that route back in 2018.

I really want a new iPad Pro with M3 - or even with M2 because I kind of don't trust Apple with OLED, but with their approach to software, it's somewhat hard for me to justify an upgrade. It's great that they are finally making some right moves in that direction by announcing Final Cut and Logic, but that's not merely enough. I want to see more of these "pro" apps before I pull out $3K for an electronic device with no calculator on it.

As I stated above, my iPad is 12.9 from 2017. Even though it has weird backlight bleeding (a common issue with 2017 models), it runs great for most of the things I use it for. And I like to consider myself a "pro" user. I use Procreate nearly every day to draw comics in a somehwat high resoluton (3000 x 2550 px) and I play with Nomad Sculpt from time to time - 3D modeling software. I'm sure there are improvements in these apps on new iPads with 16Gb RAM (and an ability to try DaVinci Resolve, something I'm very interested in), but they don't really justify the upgrade for me. At least, not now.

Maybe Apple will surprise me at WDCC. Some amazing new app I will be willing to buy a new iPad for. Or a cool feature on iPadOS that wouldnt be available on my model

My 2018 11” iPad Pro with 1 TB of storage is still going strong. I use it for everything from video & photo editing, to drawing to web surfing & media consumption. I’ll happily wait until the OLED iPad Pros come out until I upgrade.

New iPad Pros 1Q 2024 from all reports. Guessing will be OLED, thinner bezels and landscape camera With maybe MagSafe support

I feel like they made them too powerful by putting M series chips in them. What makes a new model compelling replacement for a user?

I have a 2018 12.9” iPad Pro running the A12, and it more than suits my needs. Granted I don’t use it all that much, but I don’t notice any issues that would ever compel me to upgrade until it dies.

M3 (11.1" & 13" iPad Pro w/OLED) & M3 Pro (14.1" & 16" iPad Studio w/MicroLED) with hardware ray-tracing...?

And landscape camera seems like the way to go if they can figure out the pencil situation.
Apple Pencil (3rd generation)

I’m not a Pencil user, but I’m certainly interested in how Apple handles this, since landscape camera seems inevitable after iPad 10.

I’ll be curious to see if they provide backwards compatibility with 2nd gen Pencil (via adapter), or only a gen 3 Pencil (and how that charges and pairs).

p.s. I’m convinced that many 2nd gen Pencils were purchased but rarely ever used, simply because there’s a special spot for it on the iPad Pro.
