All I want to see out of the next CEO is somebody to steer the ship back on course with regards to software quality control and fixing bugs. It's just so bad right now.

My next desire is more focus on practical, functional UI changes instead of just incessantly playing with transparency and other effects.

I dunno, maybe he should retire now? Then he wouldn’t have to attend premieres like this one on Saturday night. I don’t envy the man in the slightest and would like to think he’d rather be elsewhere too. 😬

I liked Tim Cook era for most and how he consolidate the eco system around the iPhone and positioned Apple into the luxury market as opposed to its competitors. Now it’s time for one to take it a step further. He hasn’t failed to replace the iPhone no one has so far even if they brag about it. Looking at the Vision Pro I would say that they are quietly preparing us for the next revolution when it’s ready. Thank you for everything Tim now it’s time to go and have a little audacity for the next decade unless you have « one more thing »

Cook has done well for Apple but it's time for a new CEO with more technical background like Jobs.

Tim Cook will continue to be CEO for at least the next 3 years. No one at Apple is better capable than Cook to navigate this crazy geopolitical and geoeconomical environment.
I agree.

Plus, I can’t see him leaving before the 20th Anniversary iPhone is released as I would assume he has special plans for that particular event.

Exactly. They’re not going to saddle a new CEO with the Trump issue.

Tim Cook will stay on to absorb the political heat from engaging with Trump (that’s also why the $1M donation was made personally by Tim). This way, when the new CEO steps in, they can start with a clean slate.

What state is that? The state of record profits? Another year at the top of the most admired companies in the world list? Tumultuous? Lol. You're obviously an Apple newbie because the Cook years have been the most stables years Apple has ever seen.

Cook isn't obsessed with politics. He's doing his job. He's the CEO, not the product designer. A huge part of his job is reducing friction for Apple in the market. That means building relationships with lawmakers. He's been extremely successful at it. He's largely avoided Trump tariffs. He's deftly navigated all of the ups and downs with China and India.
Oops, having an opinion must've struck a nerve.

He will not be stepping down, he will be stepping up as Chairman with more powers and less accountability. He will still pull all the strings everywhere.

Of course, the future CEO and the other board members will just roll over and let it happen. Think Not...

It's surprising how many people swear on software quality across all Apple products and, at the same time, think Craig should be next CEO. I get it, this guy is cool, but he's not the best at delivering. The amount of bugs and inconsistencies across platforms and the AI ****up is mostly on him. Hope Ternus will be the right choice, but I'm not sure.

I think the people who are whining about Tim are in for a rude awakening if they think the next CEO is going to be much different. I suspect the Cook hate boils down to homophobia because, by any objective measure, he's been an outstanding CEO, the best Apple has ever had.

I don't like how buggy Apple software has gotten, but I'm also not delusional. Apple software has always been pretty buggy. The whole Snow Leopard update was an outright admission that Leopard was a rat's nest of bugs. I certainly don't long for the days of Conflict Catcher on my classic macOS machines either. If only people would stop deluding themselves into believing that the past was some golden age.

Apple is now a HUGE corporation and huge corporations aren't nimble and rarely take chances. Anyone expecting the next CEO to throw open the floodgates of innovation is going to be sorely disappointed. Apple has been very innovative under Cook. Love it or hate it, Vision Pro is a very innovative product. It's not for me, but I'm not going to pretend that it isn't some very cool cutting-edge technology either.

It's also not like Apple has a backlog of wildly innovative products that wicked Tim Cook is keeping from the world. The next CEO will likely stay the course. Cook's formula has worked exceedingly well for Apple. The next person isn't going to make any radical changes when the company is raking in the dough and sitting at the top of the most admired companies list for yet another year. This holds doubly true if the next CEO comes from within Apple, ie: Ternus.
Easier way for Apple to do a radical changes is to fire all marketing team

You are judging Craig on a variable, controlled by the senior engineers who do the work, who in your opinion are not getting it right. Craig and John, will be judged, by the Board, and CEO, on abilities to lead Apple, and that's a whole different bowl of m&m's.

I think Tim will continue as CEO for some more time definitely. Maybe even till mid 2028. Think no one will be able to predict that information clearly.

I don’t really understand what you mean by writing "abilities to lead Apple." Craig does come from a software engineering background, but for a long time now his primary responsibility has been to set the vision for the entire software team. How else are they supposed to assess a potential CEO if not by his effectiveness in his current role?

“Why won’t he go away?” –MR.

Apple’s roadmap is pretty sturdy. With Ternus at the helm, nothing will change except for slightly livelier keynotes.

Apple is no longer the company we all used to respect and love. I’m rocking my 14 Pro until the end of time, it’s still such a beautiful phone aesthetically. My iPad Pro (M4) will serve me well for the next five years. Zero interest in Apple Intelligence (fudge Google!).

Craigs KPI's are not just based on whether the software is buggy (or rather the perception of a % of macrumors readers who think it is). His responsibilities are to align technical output with global business strategy, with key performance indicators (KPIs) such as velocity, stability, quality, financial efficiency, and team health.
.
It’s evident from the comments section that Apple stock is more important to some people than the actual products and technology of Apple.

An interesting conclusion to reach, but based on this one thread. Without good financial management, and the pressure of supplying dividends to the 'owners' of Apple, then the company cannot realise its ambitions with hardware, software and services. MacRumors would cease to exist as an entity, if Apple ceded to those core aspects of commercial life.
