I usually wait for a "super ingenious, highly anticipated, a game that don't need to give it a second thought, big favorite of mine" game come out. That's worth the price and going all the way to get the console.

I'd like to cancel my initial choice of "PS4 after a year or longer" and instead vote for Steam Box. Upgradable gfx card & HDD directly off the shelf? Sign me up! I'd rather not be stuck with a console w/ horrible clipping after owning it for 3 years (like my PS3).

You left the Wii U out of your survey.

I bought a Wii U at its launch, and that's as far as I'm going for the "next gen" of consoles.

I made the mistake of buying too many consoles and handhelds during the seventh generation, and I reached a saturation point where I had too many games I was interested in and too little time (and funds) to enjoy them all.

So, I've decided to simplify things this go-round. I already own a 3DS, and its stellar library satisfies my portable gaming needs. (I don't bother with iOS gaming, it's just garbage, all of it.)

By the end of the seventh generation my Wii library outnumbered my 360 library by 4:1, so it was obvious who I was going with for the eighth generation: the Wii U. I loved the 360 and it had a great library, but more of the games I enjoy playing appear on Nintendo's consoles.

So, at this point in time, on the console front it's Wii U only. I have no intention on buying the Xbox One or PS4 now, and most likely ever. They'll both undoubtedly be great consoles with great libraries of their own, but I just don't have the time to enjoy them.

And before you ask: No, I don't bother with PC gaming.

Online articles have been talking about how the Steambox is what XB1 was supposed to be...

I agree. I always said that some sort of modular upgrading system would have been the best thing for Microsoft to implement into the Xbox. That way it would be bringing the power of the PC to the console. Too late now, Valve beat them to the punch with their open SteamOS, Steam Hardware, Steam Controller system.

The rest of the new generation consoles have disappointed.

Microsoft needs to stick to Consoles - where you just buy a non-upgradeable box and physical media.

Steam is providing something for the in-betweens - those who don't want to assemble their own gaming rig, and those that want something more than just a console.

Steam hardware is sort of like an Ouya on massive steroids...

Love the controller - I think Steam will do great...
;)

Same, for now at least. I'll get a PS4 for exclusives but I'm thinking more about just sticking to PC, with the obligatory Nintendo console. And I've still got a load of PS3 games to get through.

Same here. The SteamBox is an intriguing concept...but I'll likely give that a year to see how it works out, and then evaluate whether to get that, a PS4 or just stick with the Wii U and a PC.

I'm fine right now with just the Wii U and PC. There just no other way to get my Mario and Zelda fix!

Oh, I didn't even think about the Steambox! I'd rather get one of those than a PS4 or Xbox 1 at the moment.

Me, as well. I'll probably get a PS4 eventually. But I'm perfectly happy with having a Wii U and my old PS3.

Though, the Steam Box has me interested because I do limited gaming on my Mac and no PC gaming...and this woudl be a perfect way to play the games I never have been able to.

It has the potential to be even worse than Mac gaming due to the limited amount of games that natively support Linux on Steam. Someone I know on Facebook was posting about a streaming ability from a PC, but I haven't looked too much into it.

Personally I hope there will at least be one option to run a cut-down Windows on a Steambox. I'd pay a bit more to get all my games playing on it.

Bummer. I was hoping to be able to play Windows games without having to run Windows on a Mac or PC.

Based on the few things I've seen and heard and correct me if I'm wrong, it will be "open", aka, the user will be able to switch hardware parts and the like at will, so I don't see why it wouldn't run Windows or even Mac ala Hackintosh.
Of course the whole "open" thing is most of the times an overstatement, as say, two years down the road you wish to upgrade CPU and then you need a Mobo and new RAM and so on, so in the end you end up not really upgrading but plain old buying all the system from scratch.

I still don't quite understand the Steambox, for me it's like an Ouya; nothing more than a "branded" box which does the same as the existent 3 billion other boxes, albeit with a few 3rd party "add-on licenses" (software).

At this point I feel if I needed a "windows box" to supply the "shortage" left by the PS3 or the upcoming (will certainly buy) PS4, I'd assemble one myself, but the Mac Mini left me spoiled so I don't like chunky PCs now, and assembling a console-size (small) gaming powerhorse is not that easy.
Maybe only if the Steambox was really small (Mac mini proportion small or a bit bigger) and it was really cheaper than getting the exact same components yourself (I doubt?) then I'd consider it. It would be great for retro emulation, which is not that fantastic on OS X (but I would hate to bootcamp).

Oh and I was going for a December buy on the PS4 but with WATCH_DOGS delayed.. I don't know, I've not seen other games that interest me unless Kojima would launch Ground Zeroes on December, which we know is never gonna happen and it will probably be more like a mid-2014 launch or later?

Steambox deserves your (mine anyway) money, the work valve have done for the graphics stack on linux (and as a by-product, opengl and osx) is incredible. They're still porting like crazy and there's real potential for a massive shift away from directx. AAA games for steambox/linux is only good for osx (I say this simply because of this apple-centric forum), and when one comes more will follow.
They're such a huge player but I still imagine them as a super, geeky, indie-style company. Gabe vs MS/Sony/EA/etc is a no-brainer, and I'm the biggest opponent of any type of brand loyalty :)

Makes much more sense to me to buy an at least little mature product instead of a plain new release, so I'll wait some time and see how the hardware goes along with exclusive releases.

True, especially considering the fact that the hardware is rushed

PS4 at launch. I have a buyer for my PS3 and all games which will pay for most of the PS4.

Was getting Watch Dogs, but now getting ACIV and NBA2K14. Might buy BF4, as Jackfrags' review of the PS4 version was complementary, but I'm not sure I have the time to put into multiplayer and my experience with those kinds of games is that you get slaughtered when everyone else knows the maps and you don't.

Hahaha.. feeling old?
Well, I have a similar sentiment, that's why I don't like online much. Not that I cannot take losing (but obviously I don't like losing), but when I'm trying to beat several games a year there will always be the dedicated users to a single game that will have you respawn over and over and over till you just drop the control/mouse and say "screw this". Or maybe they are not dedicated to a single game but they are the "me" when I was little.. no job, no responsibility whatsoever, just easy school and routine-piece-of-cake homework then playing video games all afternoon/night long...

I agree with the both of you.

I don't really play multi-player online games and haven't since I was in a clan in 2006... I just can't be bothered with them and for me it means investing more time into 1 title more than others and with so many games I want to play I just don't want to commit to online gaming...

I likewise have gotten bored of third person shooters and FPS's.

Yeah, having kids really puts a damper on all night gaming sessions, and it's always had a fairly low WAF score (Wife Acceptance Factor).

Yeah. That sounds about right. If I play a lot for a few days I manage to end up holding my own more often than not, but then I have a month or two where I don't have the time to put into multiplayer, and it's back to being whipped again.

Haha.

I'll wait on the games this time.

Last (current?) gen, I brought both on release. £280 for a 360, and £425 for a PS3. Until Oblivion and Metal Gear Solid 4 came out respectively, neither machine saw much use...
