Here's a picture of a busted one rather than people arguing about materials.
Daughter run in to me after taking her picture and it fell about a foot.

Personally I am shocked how fragile this one is. I've been caseless for years before any superior case beings have anything to say.
Thankfully Express Replacement has done it's job a new one on the way. Also case ordered for the first time in years :D

You just never know. There are so many factors in a drop. That’s why I mostly take drop tests with a grain of salt. That sucks, but glad you can quickly get it sorted out!

The people complaining about this are the same people that were blowing the iPhone 15 back glass breaking out of proportion or heat gate. If this phone was titanium people would be hear complaining about their phones getting too hot again. Next year there most likely will be some minor issue that will be blown out of proportion and we will be here again lol.

I am not taking about you specifically, geez. I think you have to understand that most people do drop their phones on hard surfaces several times during the device’s lifetime. If the phone is not in a case, it’ll incur either cosmetic or critical damage.

Again, you appear to be moving the goalposts, I have given you an example of applications that require high-end performance and these examples are no less valid just because you do not have any interest in them.

AAA games push even the 17 Pro Max to its limit so there is a large differential between the entire 17 and Air line when comparing sustained performance. The Air does not perform anywhere near as well as the Pro line in such regard because of thermal limitations.

I have also said, in a separate thread, that the vast majority of users do not engage in intensive enough tasks to see a noticeable difference in performance between a Pro and Air.

I would see the difference which is why I am ruling out the Air as a possible option for my future phone.
I have been playing assassins creed on my air all the time with no problem… I’m not sure this is even true, have you tried it? Because my air has had no problems with that game at least.

I don’t own any new iPhone so haven’t tried it. Benchmarks show the Air throttles far sooner than the Pro. It may be that you’re not sensitive to frame-rate drops or the game runs at a solid 30 even when the SoC is throttling.

That’s good news nonetheless! AC Mirage is one of the more demanding AAA games on the system.

It’s called REACT.  made a bad move leaving the iPhones more susceptible to damage when they fall So we have to react and put a case on
It’s unfortunate that we can’t enjoy the beauty and feel of the iPhone as it isl

This has been discussed and investigated in depth! The anodized coating will chip away easily from any sharp edge. This is a known, accepted fact at this point.

Well - I was thinking about returning my 17 Pro for an Air, but today it took an unfortunate tumble (in a case) out of my pocket onto the corner of our glass topped bathroom scale and cracked my screen protector and knicked the orange edge of the phone bordering the screen down to the bare metal. Guess since it's no longer in original condition, so doubtful they will take it back. I may still ask when I go pick up a Techwoven case later (a little more protective that my current case).

Take the box with you. Chances are they’ll take it back and not even look at it. Even if they look at it, they’ll probably take it anyway.

My 17 Pro Max fell from my lap 6 inches to a tile floor (I was sitting on the floor). Got two small chips at the rear top. What a joke. This aluminum got no chance against a real drop.

Never had chip or dent occur from waist high drops to the same floor with my stainless steel 11 Pro & 13 Pro Max.

I hate cases but this time it’s a must.

The aluminum on the 17 Pros is objectively a downgrade from previous years.

Small but noticeable. Again, the phone just slid and fell from my lap while sitting on the floor. I don’t think it was even in free fall the entire 6 inch distance. The same drop would have done nothing to stainless steel (happened before with my 11P and 13PM).

Wow -- that's a major drag. These devices are going to get trashed with more time in use.

What was the last iPhone that dented so easily?

Dropped my 16 pro on the road getting out of the car yesterday, no phone damage but cracked the GSP.
Hate to see what it would of done to a 17 pro.

I don’t think any previous model used such soft aluminum like this.

Literally most other iPhone models used this exact same type of aluminum or softer.
Then I’m very surprised dents and chips were so common. Never had such issue with my XS Max, 11P & 13PM, all beautiful stainless steel.

Putting this soft aluminum on a Pro model is obvious cost cutting from Apple. It’s a shame because the rest of the hardware on the 17 Pro Max is great.

Likely to do with improved thermals alongside cost cutting given they’re now using a unibody design rather than a full glass back. I can see why they didn’t make the entire phone titanium as the price would had to have been increased further.

At least your phone is silver so the dents and scuffs don’t really show up as much as they would with a colored phone.

I thought this had been debunked as AI
IDK, but the case is indeed several pieces of metal held together with plastic. It would technically be possible to break it like that, but I can't imagine that happening by accident.

There was a video where someone took apart an iphone air and when they tried to bend the naked frame by itself, the frame snapped right at the plastic antenna separator bit.
