Doubt that to be true to any significant degree. The vapor chamber helps the heat spread throughout the body of the device, but the heat then has nowhere to go because it hits layers of rubber and plastic. With no where to go, you saturate the phone very quickly with heat as it can't dissipate well. And I highly doubt it runs any cooler than an iPhone built like the 16 Pro with a vapor chamber would have, which is very clearly the optimal construction of a premium phone: vapor chamber, aluminum internal chassis (like the 16 pro), titanium outer shell (like the 16 pro). And also like premium Android flagships.

The aluminum is a cost-saving measure, and the lipstick on the pig is the thermal marketing. Especially considering a thermally-insulating case is required to prevent normal wear and tear from making the phone look like trash.
Agreed. It was a money saving move, sadly.

No, what I’m saying is that the 17 Pro runs cooler in a case than the 16 Pro does in a case. I’m not suggesting aluminium is the key factor, the vapour chamber is probably responsible for most of the improvement.

I would’ve used a case even if the phone were made of titanium, so your point doesn’t really apply to me.

I doubt any of us will ever definitively know if it was just Apple penny pinching to go back to Aluminum. There’s certainly a high chance of it, but there’s no point going on and on about it.

Either buy the phone or don’t. I came close to not upgrading because I do prefer titanium, but I decided I wanted the camera and battery gains and the 12gb or RAM, in case they actually ever ship this enhanced Siri.

I’m still much more pissed at Apple for their marketing crap last year. I never got what was promised to me when I bought a 16 pro.

I bought it before I realized how terrible the aluminum was, but I’ll only have it for a year anyway. Annoyed I’ll have to use a case (never dailied a case with any iPhone before); they all feel cheap and are basically plastic landfill filler.

I’d still NEVER recommend an Android or anything, so it’s more of a critique without recourse than anything. Just hope for a better future, given how absolutely amazing the stainless and titanium Pros held up to daily use without a case.

But the fact remains, after having owned every generation of iPhone, including every Pro iPhone, the 17 series Pro is by far the one I’m least pleased with at launch than any prior iPhone.

There are plenty premium cases that improve the 17 Pro’s appearance.

Even my TechWoven case improves its look significantly. There are very attractive Pikata cases available also along with great looking UAG ones. Not all cases are cheap plastic.

I understand where you’re coming from, as I also preferred steel and titanium. It’s tough to accept the conundrum this year. As one reviewer said, it’s like Apple sucked all the luxury out of the 16 Pro and gave it to the Air and sucked all the power and added it to the 17 Pros with some extra power.

I doubt they will reverse course or go back from aluminum for a while at least. So, we’re likely stuck here for a bit.

I actually like the shape of the 17 Pro, in terms of feel in hand. However, I was already nervous to go naked with my earlier iPhone X to 16 Pro with steel or titanium. I’d be super annoyed if I dented a phone, which is the same fear I had with the iPhones of old. If it were not aluminum, I’d strongly consider going without a case.

If you think that makes your phone look better, good on you. Personally, I'd have to kick my own @ $ s if I ever caught myself with something that hideous looking on my phone, as it looks like an iPhone was wrapped in a fabric couch dust cover from the 70's. Not to mention how much bulkier it would make it. But that's the wonderful thing about free will. We all can have different opinions of what we think looks good.

The case doesn’t make the phone much bulkier. Also, the iPhone 17 Pro is not a good looking phone so using a case does improve its appearance.

There is also such a thing as thin cases so there really isn’t an excuse.

The good thing about cases is that you can pretty much get any design you wish.

No! Just don't buy it. Just don't drop it. Just put a case on it! Just grow up! Shut up shut up shut up! You're holding it wrong!

Do anything, just don't voice your opinion on a forum where opinions are meant to be discussed.

In all seriousness though, it'll be interesting to see if Apple sticks with the fully aluminium design next year or does try something else. Lucky they released the Air, otherwise I would have just held on to my 15PM and waited. There's no way I would have gone an all aluminium phone after steel and titanium.

The phone still is functional and durable after big drops. Chips and dents are just cosmetic at the end of the day.
Two things worth noting: 1. Applecare+ doesn't cover cosmetic damage. 2. Apple doesn't care about cosmetic damage on trade-ins. As long as the screen and cameras aren't broken and everything works, you'll probably get full trade-in value at an apple store.

Slapping your phone in a rubber/plastic insulator means making the exterior of the phone out of aluminum is useless, from a heat dissipation POV.
Ya know, this is what I expected! But playing genshin on my phone it didn't feel like it heated up at all lol. The thermal performance seemed about the same one way or another.

lol this was similar to how I felt about buying a case. I ended up with a nice "lonli edition" case because I like how the leather and the buttons feel. The raised leather-covered frame around the camera plateau also means the phone doesn't rock or wobble when I set it on a table!

But yea, I agree... If the case doesn't make using the phone better, I wouldn't want a case. The plasticky cases are kinda gross.

... and even then, the problem with the nice case is it traps pocket lint around the plateau and with a screen protector, also around the edges of the screen. So I constantly have to wipe the thing off lol.

Also, what's the point of paying $1000+ for a phone only to put in a case?

This did seem like the strongest point of buying an iphone air... and also why putting a case on the air seems absurd.

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I decided I was pretty okay with how the 17 pro looks without a case on. I'm still not the biggest fan of using a case because the pro max is like, the outer limit of what I want to hold and keep in my pocket! It's as big and as heavy as I'm willing to tolerate, and yes the case (and screen protector!) make it bigger and heavier! Noticeably such!

Also for the first week or so my hand smelled like leather every time I used the phone.. it was gross and I kept washing my hands to get rid of the smell lol. I can imagine a vegan getting sick of that.

PS, The number is closer to 70% according to surveys.

I been an iPhone user since the iPhone 3G days. I didn't start using a case for my iPhone until they hit the $1k price point iPhone X. Ever since then, every person I seen with an iPhone has had a case on their phone. It's only be rare instances I seen an iPhone user in public without a case. I live in Virginia and travel to D.C, NYC, and places like San Diego and Los Angeles regularly and again rarely see anyone going caseless.

Also as a 15 pro max user before upgrading to the 17 Pro max I am fine with my 17 pro max purchase and plan to keep it until the iPhone 19 or 20. Was anyone else here on these forums when Jerry Rig's 15 Pro max durability test video dropped? The back shattered instantly in his hand and everyone was trashing titanium and saying that it feels less premium/ cheap compared to the stainless steel build on the 14 pro max. Then of course "heatgate" got added on and people said the phone was terrible. Yet now, people don't mind and think the phone is fine. I feel like the same will happen here. Like I mentioned, cosmetic damage sucks but as long as the phone still functions after drops is all that really matters. A case can hide chips and dings at the end of the day. Nothing can hide a shattered screen.

This. People on here complain every year, every year Apple is doomed, their design team sucks etc.: meanwhile in the real world Apple just keep selling more and more phones. Also people keep reversing opinion on what they want (e.g. years of people saying they would take a thicker phone for more battery, this year they get that and now people are moaning that the phone is too thick). This place (the iPhone forum specifically) is just a tiny echo chamber of people who mainly like to trash everything.
