I'm a huge fan of the current CarPlay but I wouldn't want any of this next gen stuff.

It screams single point of failure to me which, in a moving vehicle at speed, seems like a very bad idea indeed.
This. Just car play crashes for me currently leaving me unable to know where to exit and it almost always does it right when it would normally tell me the next exit.

Why would any car maker willingly handover so much of the look and feel of their cars to Apple? I can’t believe Apple even announced this. Very misguided. I guess they just didn’t want project Titan to be a complete waste.
Wasn’t there a demo where Apple showed how they could add their fonts and design cues to this that it was a collaboration of the brand language with predefined templates?

What a console pollution. Imagine driving at night and having all those lights in your face.

I like the one with a small screen high enough so you can see the map without taking your eyes in line of sight of the road ahead. Camry has a good design. Tesla, a bad one.

This is like the MacBook Touchbar. You shouldn’t be looking up (road/screen) and down (display/touchbar).

with how unreliable CarPlay is on my Nissan, I will NEVER use a version of CarPlay that takes over the car

Hope Toyota will adopt it. I know their current system is a couple years old, but I’d like to think there’s a benefit for anyone who uses a smartphone or not with this tech.
Based on their past stubbornness Toyota may be the last manufacturer to adopt it if they adopt it at all. Honda is probably a better bet.

Due to business investment ive had to ditch the fancy car and the current car is older Kia and the biggest thing I miss is Apple car play! New stuff in this article looks brilliant and I can’t wait to get it back

Lol sure that works for a clock with absolute positions. What's the max speed on the speedometer? What's the speed at the top of the circle? Where's the redline on the tach? Just keep revving until it reaches max?

My car goes one better and marks the current speed limit on the speedometer and the speed of the cruise control. Will CarPlay take those things into account?

Funny thing that the interface starts to look outdated. Saw it in a Rivian with Rivian OS (which is based on Android - again) and yes, the Apple stuff keeps getting old.

I agree to that. CarPlay is nice and convenient. I use the wireless CarPlay of my BMW For 7 years now. Love it!
However, it does have it’s occasional “quirks”… As with all things wireless, it works 99.% of the time, but once in a while you need to reboot the device….
For my car I do prefer a dedicated system for the core functionalities, as in speed indication, warnings etc. And use CarPlay for “what may fail once in a while” like entertainment or navigation.

I also expect that car companies are always seeking how to differentiate. If they all adopt next-gen CarPlay, they are just doing the same as the others. They will be dependent on a 3rd party (Apple / Google / Samsung) on these features instead of defining these options themselves.

The Polestar 3 and EX90 have both been delayed so long that these two have to be the cars that were committed to CarPlay 2.0 when it was announced. I'm not so sure that's the reason for the delay, though. Why wouldn't they just ship it with 1.0 and add 2.0 later? I think the real problem is related to having a new platform, even if it is built on android automotive like the last.
EX90 has been launched, but two features aren't available on launch - the Lidar system for improved safety and Carplay. Both will be enabled next year.

Why do I need a proper voice assistant system in the car? Make a call, set a reminder, navigation and maybe keep a company while driving alone with voice of Scarlett Johansson.
Unfortunately current Siri can’t do anything of that without errors.

Mercedes CEO said no to the next gen Carplay.
Indeed. They want full control of the user experience and (understandably) not hand such a critical feature to another company.

However, they could not be more wrong. Their own MBUX system is so horribly bad I made the decision my next car won’t be a Mercedes. I use CarPlay for as much features as possible.

I think the writing is on the wall that CarPlay / Android Auto (As a mirroring service) are a thing of the past, most automakers are now implementing their own software strategy with hooks to services like Apple Music and such. See Tesla / Rivian / GM as an example of where the industry is going. I rent a lot of cars for work and I'm on the fence as the implementation of CarPlay hasn't been great on most of the cars I've rented.
I’m afraid you’re right. Tesla does it with great success and many will follow. I just don’t see this next gen CarPlay work out. Apple overplayed their hand and as we all know Apple is not easy to work with: their requirements are high and flexibility is low. (See HomeKit support).

This is why I don’t understand why Apple couldn’t have just modified their own car to not have self driving and release. This stuff is so fragmented it’s not even funny.

Wireless CarPlay is on very few vehicles
Car key is on like 2 vehicles?

It’s the same issue as with Apple home. Incredibly fragmented, if Apple just said screw it and release their own devices, we’d finally get a good ecosystem

When you look at how Apple's treating their developer community, it's no wonder that other industries are hesitant to agree to work with them.

You reap what you sow.

As a Tesla driver I get frustrated with how crap Tesla's integration is with music, calendar, messaging, etc. It barely works. I watch my partner use CarPlay in her VW and it's infinitely better than the UX in the Tesla.
yep
I have Apple Music in my Tesla Model 3, which is ok but a poor quality interface
spouse has Apple Music with wireless Car Play in her Fiat 500e, which is great

So, I will never buy a car from a company that is not on this list or does not seriously use CarPlay, and I am glad Tesla is not on the list.

CarPlay is a requirement for me when I choose a car. No CarPlay, no deal. However, I may not want Apple to take over the speed gauges. This should be the manufacturer’s area.

vapourware no manufacture will give over their system to CarPlay. It’s just the way it is 🤷‍♂️ now if Apple made a car…..
