Mainly a limited budget. This is being paid for by my masters research grant and after paying for 4x750GB HDs, RAID controller, 8800GT, and some other supplies, I couldn't quite afford the extra $650 for 4x4GB. I will be continuing for my Ph.D. next year and will likely have plenty of extra Money to upgrade this machine and perhaps buy another.

I had a problem with 1 (or 2) of the four 2GM modules I got from them originally. Sent a request for replacement - they were sent out promptly and these new ones passed Apple's hardware test. Good support in my book.

Just Ordered.update

Okay so I went ahead and went along with the best price I could find for a 16GB kit with MemoryAmerica for $825.

Just put the order in right now, so we'll see what happens.

I have to recommend Crucial. I've ordered 4 x 4GB sticks from them. On Monday we ordered 2 x 4Gb sticks after the cut off time of 2 PM mountain time for next day shipping. The chips came the next day anyway.

i bought certified stuff from OWC and had a terrible experience. it took them more than a month to ship, and that's after neglecting to tell me it was backordered when i placed mine on their website. 45 minute waits to speak with a customer rep, and zero help when i did.

Well I have to say that I ordered some RAM from OWC in the USA on Friday and I received it today (Monday) here in Norway after they shipped it with FEDEX. I installed it and it works fine. I must say I was impressed by their service. I guess you were really unlucky. Hope you get your RAM soon.

I ordered mine from OWC on 15 Feb - the site said 'ships 5 days'. The 5 days counted down to 1 and then went back to 5 again. Same the following week. 17 days later, it now says 'ships 2 days', but that seems to be meaningless as they will probably just reset it to 5 again. Won't be ordering from them again.

Edit: Sure enough - today it's back up to 'ships 7 days'. I think I'll be cancelling this one.

After 21 days waiting for my RAM, I finally cancelled my order with OWC yesterday. Took 25 mins on hold to get through to someone.

I ordered from Transintl instead and it arrived today. Great service. Well packaged and the heatsinks look identical to the official Apple ones.

Hopefully they know more about ram that they do about octane rating and automobile engines:
Are you trying to say that my Pentium I with 60Mhz bus will not take advantage of 800Mhz RAM? :) My Civic LOVES 100 octane racing fuel!

With the compression ratio of you Civic, it doesn't distinguish the difference between the 87 octane and the 100 octane. The gasoline companies know the difference. It means more money in their pocket at you Civics expense.:)

Like I said, the ram company should stick with what they know best and quit using inaccurate analogies.

Actually, that's not *ENTIRELY* correct.

It absolutely will know the difference... it won't be any faster... in fact... it will be *SLOWER*...

Not to get too off topic... but you want to use the LOWEST octane fuel possible that avoids engine detonation for MAXIMUM HP.

In other words... the idiot ricers who fill up their stock 87-octane rated Civics with 100 Octane fuel are, thats right, LOSING HP... as the 100 Octane fuel burns slower.

Now... slap a turbo on said civic... increase engine pressure, and you need to raise octane levels... BUT ONLY TO WHATEVER LEVEL ENSURES ZERO ENGINE *ping* or Detonation.

Most people don't understand how this works... and figures that if 93 octane is better... than 110 Octane is even MO BETTA!

Not so.

The only people that need 100 Octane are people running such high compression ratios (either through race heads / cam setups or super / turbochargers) that it takes 100 Octane fuel to keep the motor from detonating.

Back to your regularly scheduled programming :)

Yeah, I was just kidding about the Civic. My SRT8 does just fine with 91 and I would never pay the the insane price of 100 octane for my wife's Civic even if it did make it faster.

So, about the RAM, I'm leaning towards Transintl.com after reading a few less than favorable reviews of OWC.

In Canada I usually buy my RAM from Canada Computers. Going to get 2GB (CorsAir) for when I get my MacBook and they cost $67.79 CDN with taxes. Apple charges $100 if it's a BTO MacBook but if you buy 2GB later from Apple they charge $200 .

Do they work? I saw that they sell the 677 for $359. But their 800s are $399 for 8Gb. That's still a decent price though.

Yeah I recently bought a refurbished MP... 677 RAM for it. (Don't get me started on the video card "upgrade" fiasco #^$&*(@#^&*(@!).

Check out their eBay store... you can review their satisfaction there. I was more than comfortable in buying from them.

3449 Positive, 2 negative. 5 stars for all the detailed ratings too. It was packaged very well.

My MP runs just fine with it... I knew going into it I was going to give a big boost with third party RAM. I was surprised at how much it made a difference. I'm a satisfied customer.

I was going to go with OWC for no reason, but now I'll reconsider and probably try TransIntl.

Not that I have a reason to doubt OWC, but there's too many horror stories on here with regards to OWC, and I couldn't be dealing with them if I had a problem (from the UK, so it'd be EXPENSIVE).

A quick poll of options would be nice.. if there are mods out there ;)

Looks quite nice. A few things bother me. For instance:

"These are exact JEDEC and SPD Mac Pro spec modules and
have the Apple Factory Original Equipment Full Fin Heatsinks"

Hmm.. what does "Apple Factory Original" mean? Do they
mean they sourced them from Apple? That they came from
the people that supply the Apple factories? Or that they're
merely manufactured to the same spec?
