for the first 2 years of my mac life, i left it hidden and on the bottom

now i've wisened up... and put it permanently shown on the right with a moderate size (about 1.25 cm icon height) and magnification turned off

always on the bottom.

i've tried the sides, but no luck - once you get used to one way, it hard to change!

not hidden, always show

Why is it wiser to have it on the right?

I guess because you have more screen real estate horizontally than vertically.

That's why I have my Dock on the right. Hidden, too.
I'm only using it for my stack of document templates.

But if it is hidden on the bottom it takes up the same room if hidden on the right. The only thing that can change is appearance (no reflection).

I think you're missing the point. Yes it takes up the same amount of room on the right vs the bottom, but there is more screen real estate on the right (screens aren't squares, especially wide screens). Also, most word documents, webpages are setup in portrait layout, not landscape, further making the real estate on the edges available.

No, he means - at least I think he does - that when the dock is hidden, regardless of where it is, it takes up the same amount of room - that is, none. What you're saying is that when you unhide the dock, for want of a better word, it takes up less useful screen space when it's on the edges.

You're both right.

Bottom, Not Hidden.

And I use SupperDocker to modify. I hate the look of the standard Leopard Dock (when at the bottom)

Bottom of the screen unhidden. I've tried in the past to move it to the top or sides, but I always move it back. It's just natural there as that's where I've had it forever.

At home: bottom, unhidden, no magnification
At work: left side, unhidden, no magnification
Makes switching between screens via logmein a little more intuitive...

As for why bottom/hidden can be a problem, because (at least for me,) I often need to deal with window widgets on the bottom of the screen, and the dock gets in the way, popping up when I don't want it to. On the right, I can leave more of a gap between the window and the dock (again, vertical screen real estate is more valuable, so I want my windows as tall as I can, but on my widescreen, I can easily sacrifice some width.)

Bottom, visable.

I've tried the left side but couldn't get used to it. I will give it another shot, but this time on the right side ;)

MacBook - Bottom, unhidden
iMac - Bottom, unhidden
PowerMac - Bottom, unhidden
PowerBook - Bottom, unhidden

Even though I don't use all of them regularly, I thought I should mention them to stress how I always have it on the bottom, medium to large size, no magnification. I've tried the sides, but it's not for me.
