Where to buy Torx Plus Tamper 6 screwdriver for new MacBook Pro?

I haven't seen the battery inside, but is there a reason they can't just be drilled out with a micro-drill press, and then new screws inserted? I realize most people don't have such an instrument, but there's one at our lab that's often used for small electronics such as this so it came to mind and has me wondering.

That's possible, and while I wouldn't mind doing that to the old unit, I couldn't do that to the new one which is still in warranty.

Without the torx security driver, you cannot replace the case or repair/replace the trackpad (which I need to do, because I am 300 miles from the nearest Apple service center and my trackpad button has stopped working).

If it's the same model, the trackpad is held in by 8 Philips #000 size screws.

Unfortunately, the fixed battery in the new model blocks access to the trackpad. It's a shame, because the design of the insides of the new MBP15 is very elegant, apart from this use of patent-protected bolts. You could also use vise grips, but if you break the heads off the fasteners (apple tends to use loctite), you're going to need that micro drill press.

I emailed ifixit.com, now they are aware of this issue they say they are going to try and stock drivers for these bolts in future.

Does anyone have any idea why a trackpad button would still click physically, but not work? I'm not familiar with the design, but I understand it's just a microswitch. The rest of the trackpad works fine.

Interesting...

Wiha seems to only make a size 8 or larger. Are you sure this screw is a size 6? Also, from the photograph, the head does appear to be slightly larger than the other pictured Torx.

Thoughts?

If it is a "IPR8" (t8-sized) screw, I can buy the driver.

Irrelevant. If you know where I can obtain the screwdriver in question, then I'd very much appreciate your contribution. Otherwise, you're degrading the Signal to Noise ratio of the thread...
I'm sure this forum has a policy against helping people do illegal things. I'd hate to see MacRumors get in trouble for aiding and abetting insurance fraud. Or see them get them dragged into some legal dispute (subpoenaed, etc).

There's a law passed against purchasing these screwdrivers??

^No, not that. Sammc wants to salvage something that he's performed an insurance claim on. That's illegal, without permission from the insurance company. Given that he's so defensive and reluctant to discuss this, it makes me think he's doing it illegally.

I don't mean to be the party pooper, but once again, I just don't want to see MacRumors get into any trouble.

Ahhhh... I see... insurance claim -- that does change things a bit so I see your point. Conceded your point (and that I apparently didn't read closely -- bad me!).

I think you guy's have all gone nuts over tools. As my boss would say "What's a man without his tools" I'm not so sure about your town but here in mines Pa. the land of the builders & factory's. I got me a set of torx screwdrivers from LOEWS that can unscrew anything. My set is made by KOBALT with life time replacement. I think I paid around $35 for them a while back. You try and call Loews and ask them if they still carry it. I'm sure they do. Good Luck! :D

The same $35 will get you Wiha's IPR set with everything from TR8 on up.

I'm getting my MBP 15" mid-09 on Wednesday, and will
verify whether the TPR8 works on these battery screws. Since it's the smallest that Wiha makes, and Apple gets their tools from Wiha, I believe it will work.

Does it carry the specific driver in question. Because I have yet to see one

a 5 sided (not 6), size IPR6 or TX6 (not sure which nomenclature is correct for this specialty bit) with the security slot in the middle.

Several people have already made this assumption. Unlike other Torx screws on other Macs. This battery is not held with a standard T6 Torx bit. But a specially built Torx Tamper Resistant Plus which also differs from the 6 sided Tamper Resistant Plus drivers that are available to the general public.

Subpoenaed for a damn computer battery?!?

What the OP does with the battery is their business. I'm sure we appreciate the "moral police" sounding the sirens on this thread. Let's just stick to the OP's question. :)

If I were an insurance company I'd take fraud against my company very seriously.

It's OP's business until he drags MacRumors and the rest of the forum into it by posting on this site. In any case, I'm not going clutter up this thread anymore by arguing about it. I'll let the MacRumor mods decide.

I have installed a SSD into my mac pro 13" & quite a few of my friends as well using this same set. I'm a pool builder here in Pa. my job is to install the computers that help monitor the pumps & water temp etc. So my tools are everything to me. So when using this set from Kobalt it just worked for me. In fact it was a perfect fit. If I remember right, I payed 29.99. for it. The best part is I live less then 3 mins. from a Loews so I walked in & out.

Make one. Start with a solid brass rod of suitable diameter. Use a small drill bit to drill a center hole to clear the tamper-proof peg. Then cut 5 notches around the outside using a Dremel Moto-tool + damascus separating disc, or triangular needle file.

You could almost certainly find all the parts and tools at a well-stocked hobby shop.

This is what you guys need:

That is the hard drive which uses a standard 6 spline T6 Torx. Not the previously mentioned 5 spline bit for the 15" 2009 Unibody battery, which uses a highly specialized fitting.

That is the type what size does that set go down to? I've seen some like this online but they don't go to a small enough size.
