Honestly, while I love my Apple products, my life wouldn't be much different if any

I don't own an iPod
I could do without my iPhone/iPad easily enough
And I use a Windows computer at work, although I prefer my MBA

If we all used Blackberries we wouldn't know any different anyway

I love my gadgets
But they don't define me or my life

Spot on. I love my Apple equipment, but if it didn't exist we would all find other technology to perform the same tasks.

You can't miss what you never had.

"what would it be without apple?"

The same.

We would have made due with what we already had. We would have moved forward in technology in a different way, yet still be excited as we are today. It wouldnt have mattered what we would had without apple, because we wouldnt have known what we could have with them.

Don't get me wrong though, in comparison to today, it might have sucked if we didn't have them.

Here's an example for those not in the know:

specs of hardware:

CPU MOS Technology 6510
@ 1.023 MHz (NTSC version)
@ 0.985 MHz (PAL version)
Memory 64 kB RAM + 20 kB ROM
Graphics VIC-II (320 × 200, 16 colors, sprites, raster interrupt)
Sound SID 6581 (3× Osc, 4× Wave, Filter, ADSR, Ring)

Some other company would have filled the void, and so I would be using a computer that fit my needs, using a phone that I wanted, and listening to music in a way that would work for me.

Bottom line, if apple did not exist, I would still be doing what I'm doing.

Apple is not some entity to be worshipped (heresy I know) but a multibillion corporation who's intent is to make a profit (which isn't bad) by making insanely great products

Exactly, it's almost like evolution, another company would have filled the 'niche' Apple currently holds.

If Apple would not be there I belive we all would be on www.atarirumors.com and waiting for GEMTOS 10.7.3 to be released. Jack Tramiel would be our hero.

Instead of Apple it could have be Atari or Arcon or BeOS or Nokia or Sony or .... Microsoft. The/our/my world would not be very different.

Ahhh, my good old C64; still remember the four sprites. And all that fun with "poke" to get sound with ADSR.

I'd have a lot more money..
I would be working for someone else and have a steady job rather than have my own company.
Apple really gave a great platform for indie developers with iOS... Would there be another device in some alternate future?
Probably, but I think there were certain events that happened to make ios a great platform for what it is.

Not many quit jobs to make blackberry apps, or windows CE apps.. The windows/Mac app market was wayy to difficult to get into and have your product seen. The console market was pretty much impossible to get games onto unless you had huge amounts of money.

Where would we be without Apple?

Well, Eve would never have been boinked by Adam, and we would not be having this very fine dialogue.

According to some here. ;)

No, but it was popularized by them

Surely you can see though that had it not been Apple either Xerox themselves or another company would have popularized it... it was inevitable.

Many of the the things Apple is best known for.... the GUI, the mp3 player, iTunes, Logic, the roots of Garageband, etc were created by others first and quite often came into the Apple fold through acquisitions. Apple has had a gift for understanding the user experience better than others... but if Apple had not brought those items to the public someone else would have.

No, but it was popularized by them

And if Apple hadn't been there, Commodore or Microsoft would have done it. I don't get your point.

Even Apple acknowledged the mp3 player market in their initial iPod keynote. And the iPod really took a long time to take off, it wasn't the instant success people paint it out to be.

I don't deny they made great innovations and designs
But whose to say others wouldn't have *eventually* developed similar or better things?

...

Sure, they make life "better", but if you took my gadgets from me today, my life wouldn't come to a screeching halt

True; but it's impossible to realistically speculate about it. Apple has a track record of creating whole categories and making them profitable where every other company either didn't see it or tried and failed.

So, would laptops look like they do today? Eventually, probably, yes. But these are the things that took long strides forward when everyone else was walking gingerly.

:)

Lol at people who think microsoft or rim would have stepped up to provide the same caliber of tools and toys that Apple sells today. They only are mimicing succes where risk was already absorbed and miserably failing at that. To simply say "oh someone else would have done it if apple hadn't" is like saying that the United States would still be the same today without our founding fathers, and other heroes along the way such as MLK Jr...

Apple changed the game boys and girls.

Blackberries would be the dominant smartphones

I have a feeling that without Apple, Android would still be the dominant smartphone. I also have a feeling it would pretty much look like what it does today. Capacitive touchscreen and all.

Tim Berners-Lee would have still invented the WWW if it weren't for NeXT. Instead of doing it on a NeXT cube, he would have simply done it on a Sun UltraSparc or a DEC workstation.

Apple is nice and all, but frankly they are far from the ones who brought even close to a minor portion of the tech/computing/IT industry innovations we enjoy today. They have been followers in most things (smartphones, MP3 players, digital content), coming to market a little late, bringing polish and marketing.
