Which Apple Watch will you be buying?

I think the stainless watch will be close to $1000.

The gold one will be closer to $5000.

Anybody that is expecting less, no way. Go look and see how much any solid gold watch from a Swiss watchmaker is.

If by 'regular' you mean Watch, then not a chance, It's likely that the 42mm Sport will be $400 to $450 ($350 will be for the 38mm). Apple should have named the Watch Premium (or something) because it's not regular. Most estimates peg the Watch in the $500-$1000 starting range. So $750 would be a good guess. Also this would probably be for a 38mm Watch with a Sport band. So if you want a 42mm with a Milanese Loop it could easily be in the $750-$1500 range.

Apple seems to be putting a lot into the bands and the ones like Milanese Loop will probably be >$100 and maybe a good bit more.

$500-$1000 would be terrible

How much do you expect or want it to be?

I don't know how much to expect, because I don't have much to compare it to. However, looking at the no contract price of iPad mini with retina, starting at $399, and it can do more, and is stand-alone product, I'd like the Watch Edition to be no more than $400, especially with the fact that it also relies on having an iPhone,

But you can get the sport if the cost is a concern.
Sport vs watch is mostly aesthetic differences.

I know, and that might be something that I end up choosing. We'll see. But again, being that this device relies on having another expensive product, and is less functional than iPad mini, I'd want it to cost less than many of the speculated estimates that have been given. But, anyway, it's a wait and see game for now.

If the edition gold is 2500, and the gold alone is worth 1500, I'll take it, basically you are paying 1000 and can sell it later easily for around 2000.

The difference between the gold value and final price will determine my choice.

It's going to be interesting, when the buyers of the $350 watch upgrade to the newer $350 model a year later, what the owners of the then out of date GOLD versions are going to do.

Sell them and take a massive loss, or keep onto them as they are gold, even though there is a new better $350 model out now.

And don't expect anyone to pay you what gold is worth, those firms want to buy gold cheap, and sell it on for a profit to be melted down.

The only option is that there will be some official trade in system in place.
give them your old watch and say $350 and you get a new one.

Otherwise going to be a lot of upset people around

You know the saying. If you can't afford to play don't pay.:D

There is still the possibility of an S2/Batt upgrade path for the Edition and maybe the Watch. Of course if form factor or sensors are added you would be out of luck.

For me it is Sport all the way. $350 and a resale value of around a $150 come update time. No way would I pour big bucks into the 1st gen Watch or Edition.

Indeed, it's what it does that matters to me, not what the box is made of :)

You can put my name down on the 'Expecting Less' front.

If I was going to buy one, it would be the Sport 38mm in Space Grey Aluminum with the Milanese Loop.

At first rumor I had zero interest in any Smartwatch, but then as I saw the various watches and rumored watches in various articles across the blogosphere I became interested. I've seen a few that are nicely styled however that does not apply to Apple's ugly unit.

By looking at it, my guess would suggest that J Ive was working on something else and had nothing to do with Apple's watch it's that ugly and uncharacteristically dull. I simply cannot imagine why they'd make it so plain and thick.

I'll wait to see if the next generation is better looking.

I did post my views on this a while back.

I think it's intentionally bland, almost un-designed.

Think about it for a moment. You wish to make 1 watch, and as we all know there are probably tens or thousands of different watches out there.

And you can only make 1 to try and appeal to everyone. So what style do you go for?

Tricky one huh?

It has to try and appeal to men and women, old and young, from all sections of society, so what design do you do with?

The simple answer really is you go for the most bland neutral look you possible can.
Whilst it won't excite anyone, and make them go WOW look at that, it's stunning, likewise it would make people go OMG that's vile, I hate the shape they've made that.

You know how when you come to sell your home, they tell you it's great if you do a quick redecorate in neutral colors, beige, creams, white here and there.

Take your personality out of the home, and make it neutral as it's hard to really hate neutral.

I do think this is what they have done, and as they only have 1 design to offer the world and all different tastes, it's probably the only thing they could of done.

If they had a range, they could of make some you'd HATE and some you'd LOVE, but they don't have that luxury right now.

So it's just a simple, safe, neutral, unexciting rounded box shape.

Nothing to really love, and nothing to really hate, it's just neutral.

At first I was really excited about the watch. Then seeing the pics and Keynote made that excitement grow even more. Then the wheels fell off the bus with the lack of water resistance and most likely shock resistance. They are good looking accessories for sure, but I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for an item that can't keep up with me.

Yeah, interesting for sure.

As far as the value of gold, I know I can get 85% many times, have got as much as 96% but that's when there is zero cost in recovering the gold, and gold was at it's highest, but you should get at least 80% for the gold value back.

If the Apple watch case has 1200 in gold I think I could get 1080 for just the gold, and sell the parts for $100, so your looking at getting back 1180. The BIG question is how much is Apple going to mark it up? Lets say $2500, so you lose $1320 after 2 years of use, BUT that's if there is zero market for working 1st gen watches after 2 years.

People still buy used iPhones for 1 and 2 years out at reasonable prices, add in gold content and it might not be that bad. I feel for at least 2 years after the launch you will be able to get the gold price plus say $300, sure you will eat what ever markup Apple charges but it's not going to be a complete loss, if they over price the stainless steel model then yea people will take a bath on those, no real value on the stainless steel:D

I am very interested in how this will play out, see if Apple actually replaces the insides on the gold ones for a fee after 2 years.

It is water resistant, just not to a very high level.

Technically yes, but realistically no. Unless things have changed or Apple is being super cautions you aren't supposed to take a shower with it. Regarding toughness that puts it in the same category as my sons $10 ChinaMart special Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles watch.

I hope IP67 but at lest IP66.

IP67 rates it for up to a meter of water for 30 minutes. Form my needs still not good enough for a multi hundred dollar accessory. My $200 Ambit is rated to 100m. Probably overkill, but if I'm spending $350+ on a sport watch I would atleast like to see 25-50 meters so I have a decent safety margin of safety when going swimming. Ideally I'd like to see a 200-300 meter rating and allow developers to use the pressure sensor/barometer to have a light weight dive computer.

Anyone know what kind of shock rating they have?

I love the idea and the style of the watch. At this time they just don't fit my applications. It's not often that I say that about an Apple product. Wondering if they just ran out of time and had to get product out like 8.0.1.

This one,,,but in Space Black, 38mm. (It does not state anywhere that this strap is available in 38mm sizes as well as 42mm. Are all straps available in both sizes?)

Does anyone know if the Gold edition can use the straps from the Standard version?

I think all straps are interchangeable. So you can buy any strap for any watch.

----------

I need to see them in person first. I'm leaning toward the Space Gray Stainless Steel, but if the price is too high then definitely the aluminum Space Black. Either the black classic buckle or black silicone strap.

I really hope the basic Apple Watch is around the £200 to £300 mark. In fact I'd settle for at maximum £400 for the basic. That'd be a pretty good price point for me and I'd get on release day if I could.

I really want one of the leather bands, they look more comfortable.

I think the Apple Watch Sport will be £300 - £400

I think the Apple Watch will be £500 - £800

And I think the Apple Watch Edition will be £800 - £2000

I don't think you are far off there.
I think some people are living in a fantasy land with their gold prices :p

I must say though, Stainless Steel is cheap.
Perhaps there are other things the steel comes with, but apart from a little more machining time, Stainless should not be THAT much more than Aluminium.
