Believe it or not I've never worn a watch in all of my 45 years. I'm concerned that I will constantly be aware of having something on my wrist and that will take away from the convenience of using it. What's the most comfortable and virtually unnoticeable band for a watch newbie like me?

As a long time collector and horology enthusiast, I'm often asked that same question. Here's what I suggest, that without fail works for those that are either new to wristwatches or didn't like wearing them previously simply due to discomfort.

In medium to ultra luxury watches the link style band with clasp is accurately known as the "bracelet". Some think women's jewelry when hearing that word, yet it's applicable to both genders watches. Not to be confused with a material strap of plastic, leather or any other pliable material.

My suggestion is a metal bracelet and clasp. Adjusted so it is loose enough to easily insert the index finger of your other hand, assures maximum comfort. This allows the watch to move up and down your wrist like a bracelet would, hence the nomenclature. As such it won't pull arm hair, it'll move or swivel if it gets bumped saving scratches and dings. Overall it's very comfortable.

Finally unlike straps and buckles where the ideal fit is often between two holes and cannot be achieved, it's also much safer and easier to put on a bracelet as it's a closed loop that only requires snapping the clasp closed.

What about the Milanese Loop or the leather Loop? I like it because it is infinitely adjustable and also able to "breathe" during hot humid days. I don't like to wear a watch that's in complete all around contact with my wrist. I like it loose with a tiny air gap between the watch band and my wrist, like you say you can put an index finger in-between. Anyway, the Milanese style band is floppy (not rigid like the Sports band) if not worn completely in contact all around with my wrist. Do you think I can wear the Milanese Loop securely/comfortable if I wore it loosely with a tiny air gap/index finger gap?

The loop is an unknown. My concern after having a very similar strap is the challenge of getting the same fit each time. Yet if it's literally strapped on contacting your wrist it's probably just fine. I have no further opinion on straps.

I agree I prefer a link bracelet too. I take my watch off when ever I wash my hands. The problem is that it so light i sometimes forget that i took it off and end up leaving it behind. That's why it's important to me that I be able to feel my watch when I where it.

You must wash your hands like my husband. It looks like a sea otter was in the bathroom before me. The nice thing about it being water resistant is that you can leave it on and not worry about a little splash. I generally do not get wet all the way to that part of the wrist. The only time I need to get that wet is after eating crab and I would never wear the watch while eating seafood with my hands. I have never in my life taken any type of jewelry off at a public sink without putting it into a pocket. Too paranoid from stories of people getting distracted and losing stuff.

If the sport straps are anything like the Casio they will feel pretty nice to wear. Leather might be a bit more comfortable but you should at least keep the sport bands if you plan to use it while working out or will be sweating while using the watch. That leather will not smell pretty.

You had better try one on first.

The returns and swaps on these are going to be ridiculous.

Yah I work at a coffee shop where you need to wash your hands all the time.
I have lost one to many a " water resistant" watch to washing my hands there.

I'm quite a regular hand washer and I've never had to remove a watch for a typical washing of my hands.

Won't the rubber band have a lot of friction between itself and the skin? When I think rubber it doesn't sound comfortable at all. Maybe it's more of a smooth surface that won't create a lot of friction? Has anyone actually felt an Apple Watch rubber band?

If it is anything like the FitBit rubber, you won't even notice. I forget I have mine on most of the time.

And fitting it incorrectly like this will ensure it never works properly with Apple Pay or the HR monitor feature, as well as likely reducing the chances of feeling tap notifications.

Basically, if you plan to wear an Apple Watch like this, you're planning to use the device incorrectly and are likely to be disappointed.

A properly fit watch doesn't move around. It's just tight enough to stay put without squeezing.

As far as the original question, there is one very obvious answer: Wait until you can try them on and sort it out for yourself. Nobody else can tell you what's most comfortable to you but yourself..

Having previous only owned water-resistant $15-$20 watches from Target, I decided to splurge on a $200 watch from a watch shop a few years ago. I was really annoyed when it fogged up inside the first time I washed my hands. I took it back to the shop to complain. They fixed it, but said in future, I'd have to remove it to wash my hands. That made it a completely unfit for purpose, in my opinion. It wasn't even any prettier than the $20 watches, so I haven't worn it since.

Happily, the Apple Watch is water resistant.

And your point is?

The answer to that question can only be answered by you unfortunately. Go try some one and see.

Ummmmmm he was pretty clear about his point in his post. The apple watch is meant to be worn while in contact with the skin.... that means NOT moving around. Did that clarify it for you?

Of course one doesn't HAVE to wear it in such a manner and could certainly wear it as you suggested but that would cause the apple watch experience to be lacking for that individual.

I would think the Milanese loop would be the most comfortable since you can size it exactly to what you want.
I have the black Milanese loop and it's a light and attractive looking. For me, I have to adjust the strap too much so I went back to the Apple Midnight Blue strap.

I have the NIKE+ sport bands, regular official white sport band, TRIM leather 3rd party band and a few Moko 3rd party sport bands.

Personally the sport bands are the best. The Nike and Apple ones being the best quality for sure. I like wearing them for the perfect fit and easy durability with water etc

Unfortunately I need the leather band for work and nights out (more formal/professional look) but if I could only wear one I'd pick the sport band for sure.

I'd love an official Apple leather loop band too if they didn't cost so much!!

The Leather Loop render makes it look dark blue but it's bright blue in real life photos.

So they only have two color leather loops in 42mm at the Apple
The pictures from Apple make it look a little darker, but I don't think it's that "bright". Here is a more realistic picture of it. The midnight blue leather strap is really nice and it boggles my mind that they don't make it in 42".

Wow it sure look different on the Apple site. The midnight blue looks almost black on their site. If this is what they really look like I will get another in midnight blue to go with the black stainless.

Water does not hurt the leather loop. It does not even darken when wet. It looks like leather and may have been long ago but it is so processed that it is indestructible in my using. Over a year on some of them with very little wear and it get wet all the time. I tried the Milanese but it kept getting loose over and over again so I returned it.

I don't know. I like the Sport band but I'm inbetween sizes. Sometimes bit too loose it tight.
How are the Nylon Bands?

Well, the sport version is probably the lightest one. I would imagine the soft leather bands would be the most comfy.

Sport bands are comfortable, however, on warmer days, your wrist can't breathe. The nylon bands are now my top favorite. Durable and very light weight.

I haven't tried the nylon bands as they wouldn't work for me from a style perspective. Nylon bands are not really fashionable for guys

The black nylon band with silver aluminium or stainless steel seems like a low key, modern, and manly combination to me? (I am only basing this from pictures and haven't seen it in the flush though).

I think what meant was that nylon bands for men in general are not considered fashionable. Link bands and leather straps are considered to be the go to fashion look for adult men.

People who don't care about fashion ornstyke won't care about this and the general functionality and simple style of the nylon band is great for them.

I consider it similar to having a nice leather wallet compared to a nylon Velcro wallet.

But this is just my own personal opinion of course.

And for casual/sporty look the sports band is great.

Surely it is matter of taste and maybe I would change my mind seeing it in the flush, but based on a picture as the one below I am thinking with a plain shirt it could give a Braun kind of look (not "traditional" but classy enough modern and low key). But yes having said that nylon will definitely be seen as a lesser material than metal and leather.

Lol at Nylon wallet. That's something that kids under 18 use or the skaters.
