Apple's demand for a price cut on A9 chips could lead to a major production cutback for TSMC

Apple has allegedly demanded that both Samsung and TSMC cut the price of the Apple A9 chipset that the pair sell to the tech giant for the Apple iPhone 6s and Apple iPhone 6s Plus. Samsung has apparently agreed to the new terms, hoping to become Apple's main source for the chip. Samsung has agreed to give Apple back-end services for practically no cost.

Because TSMC has not been as open to lowering its pricing, the company might end up with fewer A9 orders from Apple than expected. Without orders for 16nm process chips from other companies to replace the shortfall from Apple, TSMC might have to reduce production from 30,000 wafers a month using the 16nm FinFET process, to fewer than 20,000 wafers.

For months, we have heard conflicting reports over which company will be producing the lion's share of A9 chips. Back in April, the rumor at that time had Samsung and GlobalFoundries producing all of the A9 chipsets with TSMC getting shut out. That apparently was not true. In June, a report from China had TSMC ramping up mass production of the A9.

you can see how greedy the Apple is.

We should return Samsung version iPhone to support TSMC

Have had it for 9 days now.
Phone is perfect:
No lag/freeze. Perfect cool(no yellow) uniform screen. No shutdowns. No hot Touch ID problems. Runs cool. Battery life seems to be good.

Don't worry. There will be a TSMC issue to offset this one. It's funny how everyone was going to swap out their TSMC phones for Samsung, now its the other way. But I guess most of the posters on here are just kids and its mum and dads phone anyway.

I am with a Samsung chip, but I still get 10 hours of usage time on my iphone 6s. Does that mean people will get 12 hours with the TSMC CHIP?????

Looks fine. Mine with TMSC gets the same results, only I played some 8 ball on it aside from browsing.

App says my 128GB 6S is TSMC, but that's inconsistent with the idea that the 6S is Samsung and the 6S Plus is TSMC. Unless that's wrong.

Oh well, off the app goes and I don't think it really matters.

iPhone 6s 64gb RG unlocked T-Mobile

Since long time ago I had a feeling that apple should not use Samsung hardware because of their fierce relationship. If you have so much hatred for other you cannot give your best to other.

Samsung is 14nm, and TSMC is 16nm. Theoretically, the Samsung should hold in edge in battery life, performance, heat, etc.

The above site will tell you which chip you have (some other member posted this in a frontage thread).

Personally:

Silver 64gb iPhone 6s Plus: TSMC chip.

Andantech explains it better:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9665/apples-a9-soc-is-dual-sourced-from-samsung-tsmc

Based on what andantech says, we have to assume either the above "CPU identifier site" is a software based identification method, or total BS.

Update:
2,5 hours later at 1% of battery life left, have averaged 8.5 hours of usage per charge cycle , from which 85% is Safari.
Not sure how well TSMC chips are doing under similar circumstances. But i'm ok with it.

Chipgate? I thought it was batterygate? #toomanygatesgate

Also - why does the guy making the video continually refer to Sony chips?!

And another thing - I wish people would stop pushing that unsigned app. It may be completely innocent (it may not be) but it's bad practice and completely unnecessary when there are a number of well established and trustworthy App Store apps that can give you the same information.

I don't care what the Geekbench battery test states, under real usage the chips are on a level playing field. This non-issue is getting blown WAY out of proportion.
So you're a TSMC owner, right?

My real-world usage since the 25th contradicts Apple's claims, they just want to downplay the issue at hand hoping the majority will accept it. To each his own I guess.

Wondering if I should try an exchange since it's the last day for us launch day customers. I did notice when I was restoring from backup my 6s got really hot. Lirum shows a Samsung chip.

Thinking about exchanging for a 6s plus just to minimize this battery issue. Coming from a 6 the 6s plus regardless of the chip will give me better battery life

You are returning iPhone because it has one bad component from Samsung. And you are going to buy S6 which is in whole made by Samsung. Strange

Oh god, you think he was serious? Are you an accountant?

Picked up my 6s+ a couple of hours ago, and so far I actually like its size. It feels smaller than I thought it would.

My device has the Samsung chip and I'm OK with that, even if there are some differences in battery efficiency, which probably wont affect me in any way.

TSMC for me on my iPhone 6S Plus 128GB (Space Grey) I just bought at release here in Denmark.

Does it really matter that much which chip it is?
