I like the industrial and sleek vibe of the AG (e.g., silver) although the starlight, which has a luxury watch dial tone (almost champagne like) would be a close second. Both promise to wear better than the darker colors.

In Beijing, I can’t find any silver M2 MBA on display. Checked two apple stores and they have midnight, space grey and starlight to look at, but no silver. Do your apple stores have silver on display?
I’m in Australia and my local store has all four. Actually, on one table the silver and starlight were at opposite ends and I though they were both the silver. It was only at another table, where they were presented next to each other, that I could see the difference (and then it was obvious).

has space grey lost popularity?
Certainly looks like it. Superseded by shiny new midnight. They don’t even have it on the floor at my local store.

Space gray on the 14 MBP is lighter than space gray on the M1 MBA. If it’s the same lighter shade with the M2 MBA, some folks may find it too light.

I've had my midnight for several days, and in the mixed lighting conditions of my house and office it usually looks very dark blue, sometimes black or dark gray, and in just the right light, almost a deep teal. It's an awesome subtle color. Very glad I stuck with it and didn't chicken out and go with my usual Space Gray (which I also love and feel like people are hating on because it's become trendy on podcasts to do so).

That said, I do wish Apple had gone with a more bold blue, (my dream) dark green similar to the current iPhone (not Pro), and at least one bright color like the iMacs. I bet the last happens on the next round when the shape is the same and they need a new selling point beyond specs.

As for the fingerprints thing on midnight, I just don't see it as this huge problem (and I say this as a giant obsessive clean freak about my devices more than anyone I've ever met). I wonder if it varies significantly depending on the person's skin. There have been a couple of sort of, palm marks where my hands rest, but I'm seeing all these photos with fingerprints slathered all over the lid. I cannot understand how that's even happening. The lid of mine has zero fingerprints and has had for the almost week that I've been using it for several hours every day.

The real fingerprint problem I wish Apple would fix is the material they use for keycaps. Those things look shiny and greasy within seconds, and unlike the aluminum, they don't really come clean because it's sort of polishing the plastic. I think mechanical keyboard folks would know, but couldn't they fix this with PBT keycaps instead of ABS? Not my area of expertise, but I wish they would.

Its a shame that Apple doesn’t give people more options… it seems every time they come out with a computer model where they offer different colors, the only introduce one that is wildly popular while all the others are the more traditional space grey or silver

I would be much happier if instead of colors they always just made silver ones and instead offered other more impactful options like a matte display without temporal dithering or a smaller and lighter form factor.

I don't think those are mutually exclusive. Pretty sure the color development is very separate from display technology and the decision-making around which size classes to offer. It's like asking the painter if they can paint a garage onto your garage-less house.

Very glad to hear you're enjoying it. I had initially planned to go with Midnight as well, but before pre-ordering opened, the photos online showed too much black and not enough blue for my tastes, and I went with Starlight, with which I'm very happy - somewhat surprisingly, as gold is not typically my thing, but it's more like a warm silver or white gold, which I really like.

Like you, I wish Apple had made a MacBook in a true (though still dark) blue or dark green. I'd have been all over that. Well, maybe 5-7 years down the road, when it's time to replace this one...

This video is the most accurate that I've seen to what Midnight looks like in the real world. At very least, this is what my midnight M2 Air looks like in and around my house. It does definitely shift from blue to black to gray depending on lighting condition. I wonder how much variance there is from individual device to device. Maybe some batches are actually more blue and some more black/gray just as part of the colorization process.

After going back and forth between Midnight and Starlight I settled on Midnight. In the meantime there are 3 M2 MacBook Airs that will be available as refurbs in a few weeks.

To be fair I also vacillated between configurations. 16/512/8, 16/1TB/10, 24/512/8. I settled on 24/1TB/8 (RAM/SSD/GPU).

Are you back to the Air? I thought you bought and returned a Midnight M2 Air a few weeks ago.

Yes sir, back to an Air for the couch driver. Kept the 14" MBP as well and using it to replace my '18 Mini setup that served me well for years and forwarding it to a close friend whom I gave my '14 Mini to years ago.

Long wordy version of the shenanigans:

Bought an M1 Air on launch day which replaced a '15 12" rMB. Great form factor with poor performance. Used the M1 Air for a year which for the first time ever with any device, gave me eye strain. I'm 61 so lots of past devices + it took me awhile to figure out what was going on. iPad OS had progressed so I thought I would give a 12.9 M1 iPad/MKB a shot. GREAT screen (no eye strain) but iPad OS and the ungainly form factor wasn't the answer either. In the meantime I had purchased a Raspberry Pie 400 and a monitor to play with at Microcenter but never even opened them and after 3 mo returned them for a MC store credit ($300). ON M2 launch day I had $300 burning a hole in my pocket and MC had 4 Base Midnight discounted $50 so I reserved one online and used my store credit to help pay for it.

I used the M2 for a week at home then took it on a week long camping trip where we like to watch movies and eat ice cream in bed at the end of the day. Yes, life is good! No eye strain, great form factor but for watching movies the audio was lacking. In the past we had used the iPad Pro with 2 AirPods paired but for some reason 2 AirPods could not be paired at the same time in Mac OS.

When we returned home and MC had Base MBP for $350 off that is when I exchanged the Base M2 Air a Base MBP. I used the MBP for a week and guess what... eye strain reading/surfing but movies do not bother me + it has great audio and a fantastic screen... for watching movies.

This weekend is our city's back to school Tax Free weekend plus with my veterans discount to save a few more $ I picked up a surprisingly in stock Starlight M2 Air in my preferred configuration 16/1TB. I like to have at least one device where I can have my digital life locally stored and not rely on the cloud.

I was going to return the MBP but my friend had recently told me about the issues he was having with the '14 Mini so I thought why not forward the '18 Mini to him and use the MBP to replace the Mini and use it in clamshell mode with my 4K LG Ultrafine and also use the MBP for our camping trips. Plus I bought it at a great price.

If you read this wall of text congrats and as always YMMV.

My last two laptops have been Space Gray. If I get one of these, it’ll be silver for a change.
