I believe anything other than silver is simply a coating over silver and can be scratched and chipped. Silver can be damaged but won't show nearly as bad because you won't have the contrast like you would with a different coloured coating. If this is incorrect, feel free to set me straight.
I have had two silver Macbooks and I never see fingerprints other than on the screen, and those can be avoided and easily removed. I really wanted SG on this MBA but it wasn't available so I opted for silver again. Mine never leave the house and I'm really careful with my stuff so I'd likely be able to get away buying a coated MB but a scratch or chip would kill me. I'll stick with silver a third time. S
You are correct. Apparently that color, if it gets scratched or chipped, will show silver underneath, which would stand out a lot. I wouldn't be able to handle that as I try and keep my Apple stuff in the best condition possible so I can resell them later. I'll be sticking with Space Gray for the foreseeable future.

Just as in the topic, which colour MacBook Air M2 would you buy?
Had the first MacBook Air Rev A, and it was my favourite computer of all time. Excited by this new redesign. Midnight, all day long for me! Hoping there is a midnight 2022 iPad Pro to sidecar with it 🙂

I really was leaning towards midnight, but I'm realizing that some of the corners are nicked up a bit on my current space grey Air despite babying the crap out of the laptop over the years. I can see that being way worse on the darker midnight color. I also already saw some chipped "paint" around the ports of the midnight color in some of the YouTube videos posted from the hands on area at WWDC which isn't a great sign...

The midnight color may not do so well in terms of showing wear and tear and now I think I'm leaning silver or space grey again...

Although Midnight looks very tempting, I remember from my old black MacBook that it was a fingerprint and dirt magnet. So, for that reason probably Space Gray would be a better choice.

Until this week, I had been leaning towards Midnight, but the more photos I have seen, the more I've decided that there's not enough blue in it for me.

So, somewhat surprisingly, I've settled on Starlight. I like that it's somewhere between a very warm silver and a desaturated gold. My wife and I have decorated our living room with very muted gold and brass accents, so it should blend in nicely when not in use.

This is funny…the more I look at it it has too much blue!

No matter how careful you are the anodizing will chip and scratch at the edges or around the ports, especially around the MagSafe. Sliver or starlight will look newer for longer.

Preorder in ~12 hours!

Has everyone settled on their colour choice?

I'm going with midnight knowing the risks of more chips around the USB ports and fingerprints smudges.

With Magsafe back there will probably be less chances of me fumbling to plug into the USB C port blindly to get it to charge.

Me with my chipped up midnight mba 10 years down the line:

“Wabi-sabi babeh, we’ve seen some good times”

I go in knowing this color will most likely chip and fade round the edges.

my 2016 12" macbook looks almost as good as it did when i got it (i did say 'almost')... and i am on it almost all day, every day (full disclosure: the "N" on the keyboard has 'smeared' a bit).

i take good care of my stuff. and i'll take good care of my midnight M2... and will worry about what it looks like in 4, 6, 10 years... when i get there.

I would think the durability would be similar to a midnight coloured Apple Watch.

Has there been reports of widespread wear and tear? Honest question.

Can't compare a watch to a air 2 midnight lol, if you are buying a air 2 most would rarely use the ports, not enough to worry about scratches.

I think people are making way too much out of the picture with the tiny scratches or chips around the port from the YT video. Don't forget that the M2 in question was handled by a lot of people who, were obviously not being very careful. That is not indicative of there being a problem with the Midnight color. No need to latch onto logical fallacy to make an excuse that you don't want the color or the model.

If your current MacBook has scratches, then your new one will also have scratches with similar use. Laptops get scratches because they don't just sit on a desk without moving, it's just the way it is. It's happened to space grey MacBooks since they started doing Space Grey. Get the color you like and don't worry about it, but if you are worried about it get Silver or Starlight and put a colorful skin on it.

Silver scratches as well, but you don't notice them as easily because they re almost the same color as the anodizing.

Totally agree. I’m thinking I’ll pick up some matte vehicle paint protection film and put it on the MBA. It should be pretty much invisible.

I went midnight. Haven’t bought a MacBook in years. I like it how it matches my BLNR well. Also I’m putting a thin like case on it. No worries. Fingerprint magnet? The screens inside my car made me forget and not care about fingerprints anymore. I remember getting the sierra blue 13PM. Reading the same things. Fingerprint magnet and paint chip. Blah blah. Next day slapped a spigen case on my phone and that was that. I like to use my devices BTW LoL.

Never owned a Mac but ordered a Silver if they had released one in dark green like they did with the iPhone 13 Pro then that would have been my first choice.

Can anyone show a photo of what they are talking about with Space gray "chipping" or "looking faded where I rest my hands"
