Has any CBR owners tried and gotten a refund from Apple?

I know I was stupid to buy an app based on future development support but I had no idea Apple would not only pull the app from the store but also the ability to re-download it if you lose it.
I am not sure why Apple couldn't keep purchased apps active but still prevent sales going forward.
It seems like the customer really gets the shaft in the deal.

I love the app but for $15, I would like the possibility of future updates.

This is anecdotal only, but I've heard they're pretty good about refunds, and this seems like an excellent case for them to issue one. Just drop them an email, you're not risking much but a few seconds' time.

Oh I did, and I seem to get the one guy who is a brick wall.
He just started throwing around stuff from their sales FAQ that basically says, once you buy it, they have no liability.

I would have been happy with a $10 gift card but the guy won't budge.

Shocking to me that they don't have something in place if this happens.
It's not like I am asking for a refund because I tried the app and didn't like it.

This makes me appreciate a lot more the Android Market policy of refunds within 24 hours of purchase. I've already returned several apps I tried and didn't like. In this case though, pulling an app, a refund should be standard. Its not like they're hurting for cash anyway...

Ah, sorry. I was just repeating what I'd heard other people say. Whether you blame the CRM dev or Apple, it's really the buyers who got screwed.

OK. I downloaded some comics apps, based on this thread.

Anyone give any recommendations of comics they like? Or give any links to recommendation lists?

One of the reasons I got the iPad was to get back into comics. I stopped reading back in 2007/2008 so I don't know what's good lately. I like indies (Stray Bullets, Love & Rockets, etc), most everything from Vertigo, Marvel (only with good writing like Peter David), DC Comics, IDW (Hack n Slash), Dark Horse, etc. Basically I don't care, as long as it has good writing.

I do not think you can add "homebrew" comics to the Marvel app. The comics for their app are specially formatted to allow the panels to "flow" from scene to scene in a directed manner.

It's a great app, and reading comics on it is a pleaseure, bnut I think you still need an app for cbr/cbz reading if thats what your looking for.

I agree that the buyers got screwed, but I wouldn't expect Apple to refund anyone's money unless they have a method for getting the money they paid to the developer back as well. Why should they take the loss? In the end it was really the developer that screwed the customers, not Apple. He admitted that he knowingly broke Apple's app store requirements and left USB syncing in his app after Apple specifically told him to remove it.

I would, though, expect to see Comic Reader Mobi wind up in the Cydia store for jailbroken iPads.

Do you want more of the same or something totally different but good writing?
Have you seen Heavy Metal the animated film?

Well in a few months Comic Reader Mobi wont be worth it even free.

I been testing Arcreader its good, its still far from perfect, its page timeline and turning pages is ridiculously fast still needs tons of work, but theres huge future in it.
Meeeep i think has been taken out of App Store i dont know why.
ComicRad Developer has been hard at work.
Cloud Readers 1.05 will soon be in the itunes store and at last 1.06 will have a new icon lol.
Comicreaderlover: still no news, he says his working but no time estimates.
Comic Zeal havent heard news from them, hope they read pdfs natively in the future.

I've actually seen it out in the wild already, yeah. Gave it a try but it was slow and a little weird, I guess I'd grown too accustomed to CZ.

Speaking of jailbreaking--if you're inclined to such a thing, Backgrounder works nice in combo with CZ because you then finally have a means to have it stay open and at the page you were reading when you last used the app. Kind of a silly usage of multitasking, but hey, I'll take it for now.

Upadate

Clould Readers update!

1.05
centers pages in portrait mode.
Order in some comics has been fixed.
Smooth and faster scrolling and jumping from page to page.

Big Comic Zeal update. Didn't read all the notes but saw that it now remembers your place. Off to check it out.

Edit: lots of other changes, including stuff about resolution and resizing that will probably be of interest to those with better quality perception than me.

Looks like a hefty update!

What's New in Version 4.0.8
Dearest users, quite a few changes for you this time. We've added the ability to change the background, tap-to-turn pages, resume reading from where you left off and a very important crash fix. Details are below, even if you don't go through every change please read the note at the bottom regarding Comic Zeal Sync.

You can follow Comic Zeal progress by subscribing to our twitter feed, @bitolithic.

It would mean the world to us if you would update your reviews to reflect the improvements in this new version.

- Now remembers if you quit while reading a comic and displays it on start-up.
- Can now tap the edges of the screen to change page. The tap area is a little narrow so that you can easily reach past it with your thumb for scrolling. The BEST way to change page is to simply slide your thumb from the bevel into the screen and back. It's picked up as a page turn every time and it's very natural.
- Added an in-app options button that allows changing the background and toggling tap-to-turn pages. Will add the rest of the options in subsequent releases.
- When the user tries to load an image that's too large for the iPad CZ resizes it, saves it so that it won't be a problem again and shows the user a dialog explaining what happened, the dialog is only shown once. This fixes the crash on page load that some people were experiencing.
- Will now always show the series of the comic you're reading when the category pop-up is shown.
- Fixed a problem where the application would crash if the user attempted to load their comics on the first ever run of the app.
- Fixed problem with having to press category selections twice.
- Fixed crash when 'saving' a move operation where there were no categories.
- The cursor will now automatically come up when renaming or moving.
- Changed 'Other ...' prompt when selecting a series to 'New Series or Rename ...'
- Flick-scrolling now slows down more slowly ... ok, so it's like this, when you flick the page it keeps on scrolling after your finger stops touching the screen. I've changed a parameter so that it scrolls for longer.

NOTE: We've modified the Comic Zeal Sync application on our website to resize comics to iPad compatible resolutions. You can download it from the Comic Zeal 3 page.

Most of you will probably want to use the built-in import method but if your comics have a lot of pages that are larger than 2048 pixels then the slight delay in page turns can get annoying. Although the resized image is saved so it opens up quickly from then on, when you're reading through a comic where EVERY page needs to be resized it doesn't give you the experience we're aiming for.

So what you can do is run the comics with large images through Comic Zeal Sync, set to the iPad resolution, and then import the .cbi files as you would your cbz/cbr files through iTunes File Sharing.

It now remembers your place. It also offers a choice of more background colors (you can even set your own) and he added tap-to-turn. There are also several bug fixes.

Comiczeal update works superb indeed. It also knows what collection you reading, so if you're opening the collection popup, it will show you the files in that collection you're reading. Really handy for manga chapters.

Also, tap to change page is really fluent and fast. Better than comic reader mobi.

With this update, Comic Zeal seems to have addressed nearly all the niggling bugs and issues noticed earlier. Wow, I am very impressed with the speed of flipping through the pages, and the fact that it continues where one left off. Perfect. I call this battle in favor of Comic Zeal ;)

I'm curious, how do u read ur comic, do u zoom in & out or have it displayed full screen? :D
P.s. Im using comic zeal (didnt try other readers)

Comic zeal is great With the main exception of the 4 hour back ups! I mean seriously I spent a lot of money on this app and it has made my back ups take literal hours. And the latest update is no fix either.

Anyone know a work around or anything because this is freaking ridiculous.

I only use full screen. Best experience IMO.

With the bugs and usability issues fixed with this update, I hope new features will be next on the list.

Like auto-fullscreen.
Or fullscreen categories (with coverart control)
And the holy grail: streaming/reading images from remote servers (NAS/WEBDAV) imagine you donwloading the latest issue to your dropbox and you can read it directly from your ipad.

I use mine full screen portrait but my wife likes it zoomed in landscape.

I spoke with the dev on Twitter about it and he has noticed it too. He says he's looking into it. I also asked him about promoting to load the next file like CRM does and he replied saying its definitely on the to do list.

I also noticed a bug with CZ where if you reach the end of a comic and close the app, you loose your progress on it. When you opened the app, it would load the comic you were reading but it shows you that you haven't read it and it starts you on page 1. The dev told me that he's looking into it after I asked him about it.

Completely agree. The only thing I now hate about CZ is the backup and sync time. I removed the app and my backup was minutes. Then I had to sync and it took hours. I wish there was a way to have CZ connect to a server and pull down the comics. Then I wouldn't keep as much loaded all the time. I like to have a selection to chose from without having to fire up the computer especially while traveling.

I dont understamd why it takes all this time? I have more videos and music store in the ipad and it only takes minutes when comic zeal is uninstalled?

Although it certainly is not a fix but you do know you can cancel a backup when your iPad synchs, right?
