Very subjective, but I went with Speck for the 3G and 3GS. For the 4 I haven't seen anything better engineered than Apple's bumpers, but it's still early in the game.

On my 3G, incase was always my favorite, but they haven't made and iPhone 4 case. I just got a griffen reveal and I'm really liking it.

Vaja although no ip4 cases yet

Edit: two now on Vaja web site

Agree! I had four of them for my last iphone and plan on ordering one for the new phone when a white case is available. My original iphone still looks brand new thanks to those cases. They are also of course GORGEOUS cases! You have to have a lot of patience though because it takes forever to get one!

What About Bamboo?

These bamboo cases are pretty sweet....and they can be customized with any art too.....kind of pricey, but you have to admit, that wood would be a nice touch on the iP4.

Another vote for Incase. Had their slider on my 3G and 3GS. Dropped the 3G a couple times, and only just before selling it, the 3GS fell off my desk. Not a scratch. Also, both phones looked factory new when removed from the case. No scratches at all. I did remove and clean the case and phone every few months. If you don't do this, I am sure it would cause problems.

Hopefully Incase comes out with some good designs.

It really depends on what you want the case for.

That may sound silly, but it's true. Someone made a thread asking "What is the purpose of a case?"

This was my response...

The purpose of a case is dependent upon the individual. It usually falls into one of two categories.

Style or Protection. Most cases do one of these very well, while sacrificing the other.

After reading these forums for a short time, it would seem to me that the majority of posters choose their cases for maximum style combined with minimal protection. The iPhone has a unique look, and most don't want to detract from that. Yet they want their iPhone to... stand out, if you will, from other iPhones. It used to be just owning an iPhone was enough to do that. But with over 10 million of them floating around the United States, people have taken to doing that little bit more to make their phones unique... just like everyone else.

At the other end of the spectrum, are people like myself. I've always equated 'thick' phones to 'durable' phones. (Right or wrong, it's a mindset I got myself into many years ago, and I doubt I'll ever shake it.)

Combine that ↑, with my history of being rough on phones, combined with my occupation (see screen name) and you have a person who wants/needs maximum protection. So I went with an Otterbox Defender. Even in the case it is thinner than my last phone (a Palm Treo 755wx) so it doesn't even feel 'bulky'.

I've had the phone and case for just a couple of weeks (and before anyone asks, I already went back to AT&T and claimed 'buyers remorse' and pre-ordered a 3G S for a low upgrade fee of zero dollars ) and already the Otterbox has saved my phone three times. Dropped it once from waist height onto a concrete sidewalk, once from chest height down a flight of carpet covered stairs (About seven or eight of them) and once from about 15 feet onto a carpeted wood floor. Not a scratch on the case, and the phone never stopped working or had any other problems. Not even temporary ones. So I feel my $50 case (plus shipping) has saved me a couple hundred dollars a few times over.

To top it off, I've received several compliments on the look of the case, from friends and strangers. So I feel that I've got the best of both worlds. Maximum protection with a bit of style.

In short, the purpose of a case is for it to do what the owner of said case wants it to.

That's the long drawn out version of me saying...Otterbox. ;) Since that post, I have dropped my phone several times from distances of up to 17 feet. I also fell off my sons Ripstik last Christmas morning and broke my case! The phone, however, was in perfect condition. (Otterbox replaced the $50 case for free)

By the way, there is a poll in the 'iPhone accessories' forum asking pretty much this same question. So far Otterbox is in second. Go cast a vote!

I don't know why anyone would prefer the Incase Slider over the Seidio Innocase. They're almost identical except the Innocase in thinner and is lined with felt so that you don't scratch the back of your phone.

You all are forgetting about the best, Speck :p

I can't say for sure but I strongly believe that my iPhone is working today because it was in a Speck case when I took it cross country skiing in February and it got very wet in my pocket--not underwater wet--but pretty soaked.

I guess I want to jump in on this thread and ask what a good case might be for taking the phone mountain biking. I plan to put it in my camel back. Also, who runs with their phone using Runkeeper perhaps? Where do you put your phone?

Incase sliders suck

after about 6 months of use, the rubber strips on the inside of the incase slider case dry out and no longer grip the phone. The result? You pul your phone out of your pocket and the larger half of the case is still in your pocket. It happened to my many times. Also happens when pulling the cable out. The case was great until this started happening.

I bought 2 Speck slider cases in late 2008 for my 3G...they were crap. They both fell apart. I don't even think they make them anymore. I have wanted to try the candy shell case though. I then tried an Incase Slider, which is 10 times better quality, but added too much bulk and weight to the phone. Last few cases I used were cheapo silicone cases from ebay. Bought 3 of them for $12 shipped from HK. Apple sells the same exact case for $35. The volume rocker and sleep/power button were covered, so they weren't 100% perfect either. Couldn't beat the price though.

For my 4, I picked up an ifrogz and rocketfish from Best Buy. Haven't decided which I am keeping.

Incase slider. Though they need to hurry up and release for the ip4 already. They're taking their sweet time.

Any case that lets me put the iPhone in a docking cradle without having to remove the thing. This is why I'm not going to bother with the Apple bumper, because it has to be removed to dock the device.

What leather and colour combo did you go for? I have two for my 3G, the limited edition black & red, plus a reed yellow & orange strip (both iVolution Top SP). The black is still holding on but the other is completely destroyed.

I'm using the bumper for now, but prefer a wallet style, slider case. Had one for my 3G/3GS and both survived over a year a piece. I found this site, and was actually surprised by quality and proce. I ordered 6/22 and they promised delivery by 7/14. I'll let you know when it gets here, but seems to be decent.
I ordered a black/red stripe.
