Well, Alaska (including the Aleutians) is as wide as the rest of the US (excluding Hawaii), and takes up around 50% of the land area as the lower 48.

I can end this right here: Smallpox blankets.

I'll see your smallpox blankets (we did that too) and I'll raise you:

Polo Games.

I see many people in the states use both paper and plastic together at the grocery store (paper inside the plasitc). So, if that can be an option to choose, it would a good alernative. Yeah, I agreed. Here the politics is more win all or lose all mentality. When I start looking for a different place/country, my decision making process will also look for the place where I don't get bothered with those politics.

I love looking in to CSPAN and their airings of the British Parliament with the Prime Minister. IMO GWB would never be able to hold a candle to Blair in answering questions from the "house of the people"".

Robin Williams described British parliament as "Congress with a two drink minimum."

He clearly hasn't seen Australian parliament, LJH is nowhere near as good an orator as Blair but the insults and stuff that fly around are incredible. Like congress with an open bar and the company footing the bill.

I agree with Robin Williams on this. We are too civil at times. The "honorable gentleman" and such is too much.

The little I have watched I loved seeing Blair jump up to defend his position before a commons that is to represent the "people". Better than lobbyists that control both Parties here in the US. We only have two to choose from.

If I could speak the language, Italy. It would probably be too hard to get a well paying job if I couldn't even speak the vernacular.

Other than that Ireland, London, Paris (again with the language barrier) or NYC, NY.

We actually have just as many lobbyists as you guys do (my psycho-ex-from-hell is one, and was very involved in the Cash For Questions scandal that helped bring down the Major Government). You won't see ours as easily though because they are banned from communicating with MPs in the chamber.

And I'd much rather not see Bliar jump up on anything. The sooner that discredited shyster is out of Downing Street the better.

EDIT: Rereading that, I got a little bit political. Apologies.

Most desirable first:

England (UK)
France
Canada
Germany
The Netherlands
Belgium
Switzerland
Austria
Japan
New Zealand
Denmark
Sweden
Iceland
Finland
Ireland
...

I might have missed some countries, and the order is mostly based on my perhaps preconceived opinions of the culture, laws/government, weather and living conditions in the countries.

I'd add Australia somewhere in the list, but I think it would be too hot for me.

A matter of perspective then perhaps... ;) I've been to many rainforests in Australia and New Zealand, and have found Van Island's just as nice if not nicer in some respects. As for surfing, sure, good, not great, I'll give you that one. ;) As for whitewater rafting, I have met instructors in New Zealand and Colorado who have been all over the world and they have all said that the Kicking Horse near Golden, BC is their favorite. Take it for what it's worth I guess. ;)
Vancouver is one of the places that I would consider moving to.

Prefer the West side of Canada and on up into Alaska.

Yay for Portland! (Great City)

I would move to Holland (my favorite country) but retain my US citizenship for a little while at least.

Bu.but why? Don't get me wrong, I live there (here!) and like it. But it's crowded and the people are getting narrow minded (both politicians and citizens). As for the language, it isn't that difficult, but most ex-pats here don't get the chance to practice their language because most dutch insist on talking english to foreigners, and larger companies use english as the official languages for communication and documentation.

I wouldn't mind living in NZ, Canada or Norway. As you can see, I would choose for something less crowded.
