I agree and Would love to see some attention paid to the audio side of the device.A more powerful speaker, better equalization and controls over bass and treble.

A5 Processor and increase in RAM are what people will think will be in itouch 5g and i do think this will happen. However an upgrade to the camera will surely happen ( unsure of the low %, even if there are two categories)

All that is almost assured in the next iPT. While the current cameras aren't bad, they can be so much better. A 3MP would be nice on the back.

I'd hope the base model would now be 16gb, but I doubt it.

16GB would be the perfect amount.

However 16 gb will of course make the 32GB less popular so I can't seem to think Apple would put 16gb in.

However if 8GB 5g is released, people will be complaining of its lower size.

I guess it can go either side, lets just hope Apple is nice and puts in 16GB as starting model.

Frankly for me, I do not believe in those rumors that push the ipod touch 5g release data to late 2011 or early 2012. I'm close to certain the 5G will be released with other ipods and iphone 5 in september.

What are other people's thoughts on these rumors?

It's obviously going to be released in September with the iPods and iPhone 5. I think it would be cool if they released a new iPad there too, putting all of those devices on the same cycle. :) But I digress...

I think that the new iPod touch will only get a 3MP camera. It's an iPod after all, but it needs a better camera. A5 is definite, along with more RAM. Hopefully they release a 16GB base version, as that is the sweet spot for most people. And my biggest hope is a bigger screen (just anything bigger than 3.5", I'm not asking for much here), but I don't know about that. The iPhone has plenty of competition in this area, and I think this might be the year of the larger iPhone (and thus iPod touch). 5" would be too big though; <4.5" for the touch please. :)

Def the ram and processor, i dont see them changing away from the chrome back, and a better camera/recording res is a definite too. It's just what needs to be done to keep up

maybe 3MP with above average sensor :) although i think that iphone 4s camera supplies will be used for itouch 5g while iphone 5 will receive new 8MP cameras.

16GB base is a must, with apps growing in size, Ill be a little bit shocked if it comes in 8GB but but I guess i will have to find a way to get a 32GB one then.

Larger screen size would only appear if iphone 5 gets one but i still think this is unlikely, there will be a much higher chance of maybe 3.7 3.8 inch screen in the 6th gen one.

I'm surprised at how many people think A5 chip will appear, since A4 chip does a good job, jobs may be hesitant to put in the A5 and A5 is already in the ipad.Jobs seems serious when he mentions he wants to take down sony, nintendo portable system and A5 chip would be a good start.

We'll see what happens, but a 5MP seems likely, since it has been on the iPhone forever. However, I'm not so sure a luxurious 5MP is needed for the consumer base wanting an iPT. Sure, they'd WANT it, but 3MP is big enough to fill most monitors with a desktop. It would keep costs down a tad to use a smaller camera.

Don't forget the iPhone makes up a lot of money through the phone plans. iPods have to make their cash on sales. That could keep the iPT castrated at a base 8GB storage size for another years. Yeah, it's be sad and pathetic, but I could see that happening for one more year. Especially with iCloud now providing a marketing excuse from Apple.

Apple seems like it has hot pants for the A5. At least the rumors say so. I'd expect an A5 in the next version.

I'd be amazed if they change the form factor of the iPT. It's quite nice as is, it doesn't need changing, it can't become much different than it is anyway, and it must be economical by now. People buying iPTs are buying top-line mp3 players and iPhones sans phones and phone plans; computing is key and processor speed is necessary.

I'll probably get the base iPT this September (or whenever it is released) and use it like a micro-iPad. I'd rather have an iPad, but I like having an mp3 camera that is conveniently sized, and I like having something for travel with mail and browsing and document writing that can be released to my Mac later for editing.

A5 processor , more RAM and better camera.

16GB and IPS display would be good additions too.

Does anyone genuienly think the ipod touch won't be refreshed this year for the 5G.
The ipod touch is Apple's best selling iPod and I'm sure there will a 5G but these rumors are causing just a bit of doubt in me.....

I think there will be updates, in fact I think the biggest reason they are delaying the iPhone this year is so iPod Touch users don't know what they are getting come around iPod time..because thus far iPod Touch has been a "me too" device outside of larger capacity options.

It'd be nice to see them change the appearance up and set it apart from its phoned brother.

Hi I'm hoping for an iPod touch this year — my first iOS device. What we can buy this Xmas obviously would depend on how Apple wants to place this product in its line up of multitouch iOS devices. (would be nice if Apple listened to what *I* want ;))

Much of this long post is rehash of rumors and recent announcements. Hope it's not too boring for most of you.

Short version (prioritized):
  • ~3.8" IPS (retina display); perhaps new 5" model
  • A5 with 512MB RAM (not cache, correction)
  • 32GB (Base model should be 16GB to go PC-less)
  • 5MP main camera; 720 FaceTime HD
  • iOS5 AppleTV mirroring/2nd display ("killer app" for a 5" model)
  • GPS/3G (unlikely)
==== Read on for more wordiness.

The recent WWDC keynote hint at great changes to the landscape. In particular, iCloud/Computer-less syncing will relegate the computer to a "device", i.e., no longer the center of the digital hub. So each iOS device should stand on its own; and be capable and useful as the only "device" a person owns. Hopefully that mean a more capable iPod touch this year.

There were rumors this past Feb '11 of a mid-sized iOS device in the 5-7" range. Most will remember what Steve Jobs said about Apple experimenting with various iPad screen sizes and finding that 10" was the optimal size for what Apple envisioned for a "tablet" type application. Shrinking an iPad would make interface elements too small for the multitouch UI. So no small iPad.

If Apple were to make a 5" iOS device, I think a scaled up iPod touch would be logical. The current iPhone/iPod touch screen would simply be scaled up, screen resolution staying the same. A 3.85" iOS device would have 300 ppi so would qualify as having a "retina screen". A 5" device would have 231 ppi, would probably not, unless you say that a larger screen is usually held further away, then the effective dpi might be enough to be a "retina display".

Apple has only announced Apple TV mirroring for the iPad 2 in iOS5. I think this would be a "killer app" feature for a larger future iPod touch. A slightly larger iPod touch would have more room for a bigger battery, and a more powerful CPU. Imagine mirroring or using the TV as a second screen (as in those iPad driving games that display the 3D render on the AppleTV and a 2D course map on the iPad, while using the iPad as a motion control steering wheel). The most likely technical hurdle would be a capable CPU/GPU in a new iPod touch, as Apple already has the code for this in iOS5. This would propel the iPod touch (iOS devices) as a worthy competitor in the console market (probably wont kill the PS3/Xbox/Wii±U but the gap is greatly narrowed).

I think it would be exciting if Apple would do this. It probably would not affect the sale of other iOS devices, as it would be a totally new market for Apple.

Now, on to other speculation of what I'm hoping for in a new iPod touch that I'd buy… Here's what I want, in order of importance. :)

  • IPS Screen, probably ~3.8" (still "retina display")
  • A5 CPU/GPU 512 RAM (capable of driving AppleTV mirror, new apps)
  • 32GB (base 16GB; especially if Apple want to "cut the cord" and go PC-less)
  • 5MP still camera; FaceTime HD (as the iPhone will likely move up to 8MP)
I'd love these features, but would not be surprised if it doesn't happen:

  • new 5" model (in addition to the current size) - great for GPS/gaming…
  • iOS5 AppleTV mirroring/2nd display (new "killer app" for iPod touch as game console)
  • GPS/3G option like the iPad (I want it but I see Apple not giving it to me )
Just wants and speculations on my part; hope I don't get a lot of "you're an idiot" remarks. :p

I didn't provide links, but much of the rumors/announcements has been posted here on MacRumors and other Apple blogs, so I won't burden you with them.

Cheers! (Anticipating Sept announcements, oh wait… did they move it up to August now?!)

I believe there will be an iPod touch 5th gen. With the success of the 4th gen I'm looking forward to the improvements in the 5th gen.

What else is there to improve? Don't tell me the 4 inch or 3D cause that won't happen.

Camera is guaranteed (99.9%) to improve

Sadly GPS and 3G are features that the itouch will never receive so i decided against putting it on the list.

For the camera, I don't recall reading any rumor concerning such a small camera available in the industry, so I voted 3 MP, but I'm not sure.

For the 3G part: never say never ;). Maybe in a year or two-three, it probably wont be 3G but LTE or something else, but I definitely believe in cellular network inclusion within the iPod Touch's hardware.

@MacSE87

HELL NO!
1. No IPS in iPod touch, since it's to expensive (-> resulting in lower profit margins), 3.8" maybe, but that's already big for a pocket device in my opinion. 5": no way + in both cases, the device loses there 'retina' stigma.
2. There is simply no man made chip (that I know off) that has 512 MB cache. It's probable that we'll see an underclocked A5 + 512 MB ram, seeing current trend of duplicating the amount of ram every two generations.
3. I don't disagree here. I'm betting we'll see a 128 GB flag ship. That could result in 8(4G)-32-64-128 line up or a 8(4G)-16-64-128. Both seem vialable
4. There's simply no room for such (iPhone) camera. The iPod is simply to thin
5. I don't see Apple implementing VNC (the only way I see to address a second display without a cable) in there iPod Touches. It has high latencies and doesn't really look nice and I don't think the chip in the iTouch is capable of both drawing and compressing of 1080p in real time.

HELL NO!

Nice emphatic response to my first post. :p

1. No IPS in iPod touch, since it's to expensive (-> resulting in lower profit margins), 3.8" maybe, but that's already big for a pocket device in my opinion. 5": no way + in both cases, the device loses there 'retina' stigma.

I was hoping that more display suppliers and passage of time would bring down the cost of IPS, so it'd be more reasonable this year. With the rumors of "edge to edge glass" it might be that the size of the device might not change much, but the screen area would be slightly larger. Pure speculation.

About 'retina' stigma, not sure if you read the rest of my wordy post :p So I'll reiterate parts here. 3.85" would give you 300 ppi at current resolutions. The new 5" device at 261 ppi (addition to the the 3.5") would not be a pocket device, but it would be a pocket book sized device, meant for a slightly different market. Retina display isn't referring to a specific number, but that at a given distance from the eyes, a person with 20/20 vision loses the ability to differentiate pixels from one another. I know that there is more technical discussion that a double resolution iPad would not need to be >300 ppi to be effectively a "retina" device as it is held much farther at typical usage distances from the eyes. I don't know what this would mean exactly for a 5" screen, but 261 ppi sounds pretty close. :)

2. There is simply no man made chip (that I know off) that has 512 MB cache. It's probable that we'll see an underclocked A5 + 512 MB ram, seeing current trend of duplicating the amount of ram every two generations.

Ahh pardon, I was mistaken. 512MB RAM not cache. Thanks for correction.

4. There's simply no room for such (iPhone) camera. The iPod is simply to thin

I realize that is why the last iteration used the mediocre but thin cameras. Perhaps new cameras with better features almost as thin would fit this year? Or perhaps Apple may redesign the curves to allow a bigger camera? I couldn't find a specific post about thinner better camera for iPod touch either. :( But, I like the pace of technology surprising me. :)

5. I don't see Apple implementing VNC (the only way I see to address a second display without a cable) in there iPod Touches. It has high latencies and doesn't really look nice and I don't think the chip in the iTouch is capable of both drawing and compressing of 1080p in real time.

I wasn't thinking of VNC; I was referring to the iOS5ß+iPad2 mirroring shown at WWDC. But it doesn't just support mirroring, some current games that use the cable to connect to a TV can actually drive the screens separately. Some blog tested it using the AppleTV set up and it just worked.

There was a iPad 2 (iOS5ß) + AppleTV youtube video recently featured on MacRumors. There are a couple of games running on the iPad that uses the TV screen for one thing and the iPad screen for something else. Wirelessly utilizing the AppleTV. So the driving game: TV = 3rd person render of car on race track; iPad = 2D course map, other game info. All the while you're using the iPad's gyro/accelerometer to steer. Pretty neat. Announced as iPad 2 only, but would be great for next iPod touch. A5 in the iPad2 seems enough to do a decent job of 2 displays on beta software. :D Here's to hoping.

Cheers!

sorry about letting hell down on you - I should have incalculated my tiredness and realized that it might have been to rough :)

About the mirroring, I missed that apparently, so if Apple presented it, we'll see it in iOS 5.

But for the screen sizes: I think that there are other things you have to account for. I don't think that Apple, when designing a new product with a 'new' LCD tries out 300 000 different screens but asks it's business partners for LCD's around a certain sizes, which are cost friendly to produce (not much leftovers in a batch). That's for example why most of the industry uses 16:9 ipv 16:10 or 4:3 (I don't know why Apple insists on using 16:10, maybe to stand out?).

In the next fase they try out all these sizes and then chose there most preferred one. It's not the other way around.

For retina it's the same. Apple might have concluded that from x" a dpi of 300 or more qualifies as retina. Then they look which screen can be produced at about the same size, whit quadruple the resolution. (Maybe Apple even tried retina displays in pre-production 1G iPhones - and just kept that in mind when choosing the resolution and dimensions of the 1G iPhone ?). What you're saying is the other way around, and it seldom works that way.

The 5" is I think, just out of the question. SJ said: 7" is to small for a tablet, and to large for a phone. The 5" is like something between that weird tablet and a phone, so I'm guessing we wouldn't see it appear in any device.

But I'm not stating facts. I could be totally rong. I've never been on the Apple campus, nor do I know any designers, so this is just how I think it works

I'm hoping for a new Touch also but there is a real possibility that this will be the year that Apple drops it. See my thread on Touch EOL. I keep getting disappointed with each years versions of the Touch and feel it is stale. Apple has always had the Touch as a low cost no contract alternative to the iPhone but if they have been able to redesign the iPhone for a low cost no contract model- AKA the iPhone Nano then the Touch will have a very limited market. That would be the perfect time of course to introduce a new "Phat" Touch a 5 inch gaming centric device. It could happen - remember Gruber's predictions about a "Fall Surprise" for the Touch.
We shall see but it looks like some interesting things will be happening.

Exactly, these would be the absolute perfect additions

1-IPS display would be great, I'm assuming cost has come down and it has to be less than OLED displays
2-A5 and RAM increase seems like a definite and with retina res games, this is needed.
3-Apple would have to be really nice to put in 16GB since it would cut in to the sales of 32GB
4-I'm pulling for a 5MP camera, since iphone5 is getting 8MP, I hope ipod touch is handed down the 5MP camera. Who knows, ipod touch might grow mm or 2:eek:

http://www.ipodnn.com/articles/11/06/24/ipod.touch.2011.likely.to.keep.same.shape.go.a5/

Well, the iOS 5 code points to a new iPT. Note that it is expected to be the same design. If they do double all memory and upgrade camera and processor, I think it's going to be my new purchase for portable computing/writing/browsing/email/etc. 16GB base model for $229 would be sweet.

I think A5 is a near guarantee since ipad2 got 1, It would be seem that ipod touch would be put away if it doesn't receives the upgrades of other idevices.

Camera has to be upgraded, getting iphone4's camera would be great

double the memory has to happen, its 256 for 4 years......

Only fishy thing would be 16GB

I AM BACK

After an unfortunate event that denied me access to reply, I am back to restart and re energize this thread.

More replies are welcome, as August and September approaches, more iPod Touch 5G rumors will hopefully come out!.

Keep in mind that we don't want something that'll make it thicker, and I'm sure Apple feels the same way.

3G data would make it thicker because of the radio and so would a better camera sensor.

128GB + seek buttons (forward/back) would probably get me off my classic once and for all. There is plenty of room for the seek buttons next to the home button.

Adding seek buttons is done via two home button clicks at the lockscreen. Is that TOO DRAMATIC OF A CHANGE FROM THE CLICK WHEEL?

If there going to add data, you might as well not have an iPod Touch. You are going to have to pay data, so you might as well add a phone plan, and get an iPhone.
