The computer costs about $2500. It really works fine. You guys are making windows me out to be this horrible outdated os. It's really not bad. But nonetheless, she will not give the computer up until it doesn't work anymore. Xp is still widely used on today's computers, so why is it so surprising to use an OS that is one year older? It's still going strong. Go figure.

I have nothing against PC's, but due to its age and lack of support from Microsoft, Windows ME is a horribly outdated OS.

If the computer is not connected to the internet then she is fine, and can happily carry on using it. If it is connected to the internet there is a good chance it has been compromised, and she could be unknowingly sharing passwords and personal information and files with whoever could with relative ease hack into her system. The fact that it originally cost a lot of money is irrelevant.

Why do you buy an iPhone 5s from 2013 when you're using a computer from 2001? You should buy a Nokia 3310.

Get a low price laptop for iTunes and she can continue to use her ME computer for everything else.

I wouldn't be so sure. My mom had a windows 3.1 machine sitting around until about 5 years ago. There're still some Amigas out there too.

Old people can be very illogical, especially when ignorant.

The real shocker, is the OP doesnt care that his grandmother is doing her banking and bills on such an insecure system.

Your grandma is aware that she is using Microsoft's WORST EVER OS, right? If she is stubborn, then I would at least downgrade to 98 SE or find a way to put 2000 on there.

Because it is! Just because it cost $2,500 doesn't mean it is going to stay relevant forever. Get rid of that piece of junk. Let me guess, you support typewriters too because they didn't stop working ether? I can't believe she pays bills on a 15 year old OS. The security of that computer is like not having any locks on a front door but having a piece of paper that says "Please Keep Out".

ME was probably the worst OS Microsoft ever released. At least get her on 2000.

So...

Why is this thread filled with trying to explain to the OP that his grandma's ME computer is horribly out of date. I am pretty sure he gets it. There is no reason to go on and on for pages about how a $250 computer today can do many times more what a $2500 computer of yesteryear can do.

At the end of the day, Grandma is an adult. As much as you folks seem to think it's ok, it is very degrading to FORCE an adult to do something, because "you know better". This often happens with the elderly and it contributes to depression and shorter lifespans. One can suggest things, but that is very different from "not letting them" do things. Yes, her risk of having her social security check stolen is probably higher on that machine. Explaining that to her an allowing her to come to the decision herself is the proper answer here. It's hard to imagine, but you will all get old someday, and perhaps in a similar situation.

I was going to recommend GMusic, but even that requires XP or higher. Is it an option to grab a thug drive and save all of her music to that and then sync it to stuns match using another computer or something?

If she refuses to use anything newer then that is on her. You will have to explain that there is no way her iphone will work with that computer without a newer operating system. How a Windows ME machine is still running is a whole nothing matter. Microsoft basically glued Windows 98 and Windows 2000 together and it was a horrible, buggy mess. But nobody can force her to upgrade, she just has to understand that a lot of things won't work anymore. What bothers me is that her bank still supports whatever ancient browser she is using.

Oh wow. She is running Norton Anti-Virus 2001 though. I know she regularly scans her hard drive and its always good.

My next bet would be to try and get XP on the computer. But I can't figure out why MS would want to pull support for its legendary OS?

Will it run XP? It's a 1000mhz processor (Pentium III) 512mb ram, 80GB hard drive, ATI Graphics

Yes XP will run and likely be much more stable than ME as in less bugs. But performance will still likely lag.

UPDATE: I sat down with my grandma last night and explained to her how it is unsafe to use this OS. I then went on about security and she should not put any personal info on the internet with this computer. I said I do not want her to become a victim of identity theft. I tried to convince her to bank with her new iPhone.

She said she is not changing her habits. She is going to live without her 50 some songs on her iPhone. She likes how ME looks and does not want to learn something new. She said she understands that technology is moving forward, but she's happy where she is at. So that pretty much wraps up my dilemma. I'll just hope that she continues to be safe in there.

Knock on wood, she hasn't had a problem in the 13 years she has been using ME with her finances.

Understandable. I wish her the best of luck! :)

LOL, this was an epic giggle this thread. Thanks for the laughs.

You can change the look of Windows XP to be very similar to ME if you want

I did not know that. Until I began reading some of the posts in this thread, I did not think Millennium Edition was that bad to use nowadays. I will just keep a close watch on her so nothing bad happens.

Anyways way her computer could mysteriously "crash" or something and then get her a new one?

Why would I break it? If she wants to continue to use it, there is nothing I can do. Its her property. She actually mentioned today that she was interested in learning how to bank on her new phone. My grandma is old. I do not even get her. But if she wants to hang on to her old computer that is HER choice.

I get it, but you're trying to protect her as well. As people said Windows ME is very unsafe, and if that was my grandma, I would do whatever it took to protect her.
How about maybe if you have an old (newer to her) computer she can try and use. Maybe if you teach her on a newer computer and the benefits, maybe that will help.

While I really appreciate those trying to help here, I do NOT appreciate those calling my story untrue or unrealistic. Its very true. Grandma is a very stubborn woman. Fact is, she just got the iPhone 5S yesterday. I don't think the reality has set in yet. While I do not believe ME is as bad as some of your are making it out to be, I am going to look into putting XP on the computer. While it may be unsupported, she will be able to run many more prgrams, including itunes for her new iPhone.

Go to Walmart and buy her the cheapest computer available. It will still be light years ahead of what she currently has. Fact is, that computer is very unsecure and outdated.
