I don't have a car, yet I have been known to lust, fatuously, idiotically, (yet admiringly) at some stylish vehicle in a car magazine.

Same when I see some luxury car ads, even if there's no way I'd buy such a thing. I knew I'd never own an airplane either, much less a supersonic one, but that didn't keep me from cutting out pictures of the X1 when I was a kid. Sure we never hitched a ride in anything sleeker than a Piper Cub, but...

I've never been averse to accepting a hand-me-down copy of Vogue magazine, and one of my favorite rewatch movies is "The September Issue." My own clothes are mostly utilitarian for life in the sticks, but that doesn't stop me cruising through Vogue for the merry hell of it, and falling in love with the look of a few things... on the models, of course. There's no way I'd wear the stuff just as there's no way I'll ever make a tenth of the recipes from upscale dining establishments that I might bump into online now and then. But that never keeps me from reading them and admiring the photos.

Eye candy, don't pass through life without some, whether it's centered in visual arts or the occasional dime novel.

Look: I blush to confess (here, not elsewhere, for my German sister-in-law is an ardent Green, and my brother's - the brother usually referred to as Other Brother on these threads - political preferences tend to tilt in that direction as well) that I have even watched - watched, not just read - reviews of, ah, eh, um, the Bentley Continental GT.

Now, my sister-in-law and brother are passionate Greens, whereas I, myself, tend to support a sort of leftish social democrat political stance - I mention this merely to make the point that this means that my views on taxing those individuals who may be able to afford a Bentley Continental GT are rather predictable.

So, that brings us back to the wonderful lines penned by Walt Whitman, when he wrote: "Do I contradict myself? Very well, then I contradict myself, I am large, I contain multitudes."

Check out your local library, many have online resource sections which give free access to newspapers and magazines. I read through RB Magazines ( previously called Zinio) the Economist, Time and the New Scientist, absolutely free

Ahhh...you reminded me of my school library they used to have magazines, it was a pleasure just to pick one out and flip through them...the articles, pictures, glossy paper...even the ads. Magazine cover was something to get excited waiting for.

That's an excellent combination of reading material! I concur with you regarding the stark contrast in quality between print publications and websites. The hard copies always have a more refined and edited look, whereas websites tend to be more disjointed or hurried at times. It's great to hear you're immersing yourself in a range of sources; remaining current with varied viewpoints is always worthwhile. Do you think that the electronic versions are a suitable replacement for the hard copies, or do you prefer the sensory experience of holding a physical piece of paper?
In general, I prefer physical. Just the smell of a newspaper puts the brain on notice about being focused for the news. However, it is now too expensive - much more expensive than it was when I wrote that post in 2019 - so I have to resort to the e-edition.

I miss the physicality of the pre-smartphones era.

Agree completely.

Oh, yes.

A passionate and heartfelt amen to this sentiment.

I haven't read a magazine in a long time but IIRC, the language quality on the articles was much better than the "chat" slop filling the internet today. It was much easier to read and comprehend.

maybe because the columnist had a full month to work on it :D

When I was single I used to subscribe to Playboy, MacWorld and National Geographic. I stop getting Playboy after getting married. I stop getting MacWorld back in the 90's. I stopped getting National Geo...dunno when. But the skill of their [Nat Geo] photographers got me interested in photography.

Ha, I got my first apartment in 1986, in 1987 I subscribed to Playboy for a few years, my gf at the time was ok with it.
Pictures lovely, good articles actually.

Did a search on “magazines “ in my facebook profile ..

FWIW I have not gotten magazines in a long long time.
But, I’m 62 and retiring soon, maybe get 1 or 2 again

I've had subscriptions to lots of different magazines over the years.
Former:
Omni
Peterson's PhotoGraphic
Popular Photography
Better Homes and Gardens
Some hydroponic journal that didn't amount to anything
HortScience
Computer Shopper - these were MASSIVE!
MacWorld
Keyboard
Family Handyman
This Old House (What I really needed was "This Not-so-old House"!)

Current:
Wood magazine
Garden Gate
Guidepost

One of the worst things about magazines in today's day and age is the lead-time. By the time you plan the issue, write the article, get the photos, run the layout, publish, and distribute the issue, the article is three months out of date. When I would finally see a review of a new Mac in MacWorld, I was had been reading about it here on MacRumors for six to eight months, if not longer.

But I really enjoy print magazines for what they were - a time capsule, a picture in time. I saved a few old Computer Shoppers that had the year end "ultimate laptop/gaming system/business computer" specs in them. You pull those out and gawk at ancient specs dated not as long ago as your memory had tricked you into thinking. I feel the same thing when I look at dated home design ideas that are only three to five years old!

-Maybe you are exagerating. Product releases were reviewed same month or next month issue. Life back then was slower so it was ok. TBF , it might be slightly outdated but the content was superb (for the quality ones) .

I felt something wrong with that CVS magazine stand, then I read the date 😂 For a moment I thought in the USA they still sell printed magazines

I was a magazine junkie. I found a discount site years ago that had everything for like $8/yr. So I was getting GQ, Esquire, MacWorld (free one year sub with Mac purchase), Architectural Digest, Travel & Leisure, Mad Magazine, etc.

No sadly MacWorld went dodo 🦤 bird many many moons ago.

Have you never seen or used a 400k, 800k floppy disc before? That metal “thing” protected the magnetic spinning disc when not inserted in the disc drive. Back in the day whole computer OS, programs, and data all stored on 1 floppy.

$8 or $80/year? per magazine or access to all magazines?
this is printed or digital? do you get access to backlog?

Although I like magazines, a lot of them were low effort "cover bait" for consumers. It got ridiculous with niche interests. I still remember one magazine called "small business opportunities" IIRC , each month the cover was some amazing get rich quick scheme :D

In my head now pops the matte texture thick cover of magazines, those were awesome, very luxury like. I think WIRED used those.

I think it was from discountmags.com years ago. The price has gone way up.

Subs were like $6-9/yr. each. No backlog, just the 6-12 issues.

Omg! I’d forgotten about Omni, I used to occasionally buy it as a teenager - took days and days to read it. It was such a great magazine.
And you username just reminded me I had subscriptions to a couple of dive magazines as well! I know the Diver's Alert Network (DAN) magazine was one of them...

I got Omni when another mag I subscribed to folded and they rolled over the subscription to Omni.

For years, over this side of the pond, the only dive magazine was really just Diver Magazine (ex Triton) you also got it if you were a member of BSAC - we never really got a handle on Skin Diver which was available in the odd newsagent (all warm water stuff and adverts) then with all the mixed gas stuff Aquacorps came out in the States which we all thought was great and it was followed with 9>90 magazine over here which was superb...
