Just be honest and tell him that u have no idea. Why didn’t you ask him any information what he plans to do with it?

Or just give him your 15“ u wanna get rid off. But when u think about that even u are unhappy with your buy what makes you think you can recommend it to your buddy?

what kind of business is it? I only get questions from friends of mine that dont run their own business’s. Usually business owners that need a computer for actual work that their company needs know what they want and have it before the business is actually successful.

I have a buddy who knows I'm really into Macs and he asked me which laptop he should buy.

He's mainly using it for work. I know he runs a pretty successful business.

I was thinking of just telling him the 2019 15" model with 8-cores and 512GB SSD?

I might suggest he upgrade to 1TB of storage if he's willing to order online and the store doesn't have it

Use your own experiences of getting a mac and apply that experience to your buddy. Ask yourself, 'why did i get a Mac, what the reasons that persuaded me to get one'. if your own answer is 'i got a mac because i like them', this means your not qualified or experience enough to be able to help your buddy.

I don't think mine is appropriate because it has 256 SSD.

I think he needs a 15" mainly just because of the screen real estate, but I'm thinking the 8-core model with 512 GBs or maybe even suggesting he get the 1TB upgrade if he needs the space.

Do I think he needs 8-core?

Well I assume "time is money" for him so I just want to suggest the fastest one Apple got.

We still don’t know what this business is for. All we know is he sells baked goods and you’re trying to find Him a computer.

Also, what does he have now? What size hard drive? We don’t know anything.

I know the 8 core 15" gets hot, but I don't know that the heat can be properly regulated to use for baked goods. He might actually be better with a conventional oven? :)

@Hieveryone - first thing is to determine his requirements.

He works in finance! I've known him for years. Currently he's on a Dell. I've seen it many times but am not familiar with what model because I dont keep up with their product line.

All I can say for sure is that it's not an Alienware LOL

Actually runs cooler than my 2016 15” quad core i7:p

He’d be fine with a 12” MacBook. If he’s been fine with his current computer anything in apples line is fine for him depending on what he wants for screen size. Running Spreadsheets isn’t hard for any computer.

Even if I OVER-recommend I don't see how this is a problem given he's got money. I'll just tell him this:

1) I think the 15" will be good because it's got the bigger screen real estate which will probably be useful in running your business.

2) There's a 512 GB SSD model which I think has plenty of space but you might want to upgrade to the 1TB space if you need it. You can order it on Apple's website or call the Apple store

3) If by chance, you use cloud storage a lot and only need 256GB storage, then there's a model with that but the CPU isn't as powerful. It's a 6-core instead of an 8-core.

4) If by chance you don't want a 15" as it is bigger and want something more portable, get back with me. Many options from MacBook to MacBook Pro to even an iPad Pro (which you can add a keyboard)

Right I agree. The problem here is what screen size will be most useful for him. That's why I'm thinking 15" because I'm guessing you can see more content than the 13"

You say a 'million dollar' business, but you don't specify how you're measuring - Turnover? Revenue? Profit? Market Cap? Important to know as if it's a $1M company by turnover/ revenue he could still be flat out broke, if it's a $1M company by profit or market cap he's probably got enough cash for at least an entry-level Pro - you need to give us the important info :p

The 12" MacBook has just been discontinued so that is not going to be a possibility for him now. Yes, 15" MBP offers the most in terms of power and screen size, but is a bit heavy and large for extensive traveling. The 13" MBP is idea for travel and also for use at an office or home, and if need be, a separate external display can be purchased and used as well, providing more screen landscape.

Idk the specifics but I believe he had mentioned he makes for his take home around ~27K a month, which isn't bad for a single guy no children

But the bottom line is, I think most would agree, the 15" DOES offer a lot of screen real estate which can be very useful especially for work stuff.

And 256GB for a lot of people is small storage...

So by elimination that leaves the 8-core 512 and if needed an upgrade to 1 TB.

Now, I don't think he needs 32GB RAM. That's seems like WAY too much. I would think 16GB is enough for majority of people.

True. I'll mention this as well. If he needs portability for travel, I'll tell him to hit me back and we'll talk about the 13".

Dell Precision 7730 Workstation. $12,000. Should have enough of everything.

So... after a while of reading, I still don't get why you are recommending him a MacBook.

Tell him to go buy a LG Gram 17 because:
1. He already knows Windows.
2. It's cheaper than a comparable MacBook Pro 15".
3. It's far lighter than the 15" MacBook Pro.
4. It's got more screen real estate (17" screen).
5. It's not afflicted with a butterfly keyboard.
6. It's got ports that he may need like USB and HDMI. And still has Thunderbolt 3.
7. It does have very good battery life (try 10 hours with WIFI on and 12-13 in airplane mode) and thermal because it's not built with an 8-core Intel processor or has discrete graphics.

I am a Mac user and won't give up my MacBook Pro 13" any time soon but I got an LG Gram 17 for my dad and I can attest that it's just the better computer for someone who doesn't care about top specs.

May be heresy to post that in MacRumors but it's true. Apple has slipped too far. Recently, Safari has been buggy and has forced me to use Chrome, which adds insult to injury.

27k a month for a single guy is peanuts. How does one survive with such small amount of money. Jokes aside anyone with this kind of money should have an idea of what they want and already of bought it. I see broke college kids with 15” macbook pros if your buddy needs a computer just tell him to get a maxed out 15” model. done and done

The 15” isnt huge… I had a 13” 2011 macbook pro and the 15” nowadays is more portable. its 4 pounds. My old 13” was 4.5 pounds. If you have a bag a 15” will fit just as well as a 13”. These machines arent much different in size to say one is more portable imo. 1 pound difference in them isnt going to change how much i feel about portability. Now a 12” compared to the 15 is a little different.

Haha I’ll let him know $27K a month is weak :D

Joking aside, the maxed out one is ridiculously expensive. He doesn’t edit videos for a living, he’s in finance.

I don’t want to tell him to go buy the maxed out one just because he can...

it was a joke. For anyone that makes that amount of money that shouldnt be a big deal. If i made that kind of money id have a mac pro on order and a 15”. Especially becaue he runs his own business and he can add these as work expenses for taxes. But he should know that being in finance…

Well u assume a lot but u don’t know. Thats why we say without knowing his requirements there is no answer.

U are here long enough in this forum to know this. Every day someone asks whats the right device. And first there is the step to answer „what for?“

U do not even know if he’s working with windows only financial software.

Next time he asks u for a transportation vehicle. And u assume he has money and fast is always good. So u choose a Tesla. But in the end he just needs a truck for transportation of his million dollar goods
Do u get the point?

No point trying to explain anything, I just had a brief look at his posting history and well..... lets just say its not worth the time replying.
