Which model computer should I recommend to my friend who runs a million dollar business?

There are a lot of jobs in finance and some require a lot of computing horsepower and some require only an HP Financial Calculator. Does he backtest trading strategies? That requires some compute horsepower. Does he run 80 realtime charts on his computer like I do? That requires computing horsepower, a good network connection, decent video and a lot of memory.

Is he an Investment Banker? Maybe his people skills are more important than his type of PC.
 
If he is a typical CEO, the new MacBook Air or MacBook Pro 13" with a dock and large screen at his desk. Ask how much storage is using now and double it, round up to nearest size. He'll most likely just be viewing stuff and do MS or Apple "keynote/numbers/pages".

The 15” isnt huge… I had a 13” 2011 macbook pro and the 15” nowadays is more portable. its 4 pounds. My old 13” was 4.5 pounds. If you have a bag a 15” will fit just as well as a 13”. These machines arent much different in size to say one is more portable imo. 1 pound difference in them isnt going to change how much i feel about portability. Now a 12” compared to the 15 is a little different.

I've got the 2015 15" MBP and the 2018 15" MBP.....yes, there is a noticeable weight difference between the two of them. I really was keenly aware of the older machine's weight when I had to take it to the Apple store Genius Bar twice this month and bring it back home...... I much prefer the 12" MacBook for travel! I used to have a 13" MBP and for quite a while that was my traveling machine. If something were to happen to my 12" MacBook now I would probably replace it with a 13" MBP for travel and continue to use my 15" only at home.

Are you talking about the new cheese grater Mac Pro or the old trash can Mac Pro?

We still don't know how much the new ones will cost do we? I just remember the stand is like 999 lol

Are you saying if he HAS i.e. 512 double it to 1 TB for future proofing or are you saying if he USES 100GB suggest 256GB? Also, what does being a "typical CEO" entail?

EDIT: DONE! Thanks everyone for your help. I suggested the 15" 512 GB model. Not becuase of the 8-core but because of the space. I also said if he needs more storage than 1TB is available.

He mentioned he'll probably go with silver.

I like Space Grey because my 15" 2018 MBP is on a stand and I have matching Space Grey Magic Keyboard with Numbers Pad and Space Grey Magic Mouse 2. They all look so pretty and so elegant..... Oh, and yeah, my 12" MacBook is also Space Grey. Trendy and fashionable, the lot of 'em.....

The new cheese grater macpro. They announced it a month ago on stage. I personally think it’s design is super nice and functional. Starting price on them is 6000. If I had the money I’d buy one and the 5000$ monitor. The stand is ridiculous though

If I had suggested he spend a minimum of 6000 for the cheese grater Mac Pro, 5000 for the monitor, and 1000 for the stand...

He probably would've stuck with Dell LOL.

But then again who knows. I don't know what his bills are but if he in fact makes 27K per month 12K isn't even half of one month's income

I've heard people say the space gray iPad/iPhone is better because the front black screen like for iPhone 8 for example is more immersive for movies and video.

That machine and monitor is for professionals not someone in finance. Go look up what it Cost for a reference monitor. 30k for a 20” monitor enough for you? If apples new 6k monitor is on the same level as these reference monitors it will be a bargain. We’ll know in a month or two

No, thank goodness!!!! I'm retired, but even when I was working that was not part of my job responsibilities.

Yes, the Space grey iPad and Space Grey iPhone are better for viewing images and such, as there is no distracting white frame around everything the way there is with white bezels. Images really pop.

Yes I agree. I know people who want gold or white and I always tell them that’s fine but just know your black front iPhone feels more immersive. Or iPad.

I actually read about that on this forum somewhere and it’s a pro tip that I think is really helpful.

Regarding my friend, he always complains how he pays over 5000 a month in rent for only a TWO bedroom condo. Idk if he has car payments but he has a really sweet car so probably unless he had saved up the cash for it

I have a friend, used to manage a small hedge fund in Boston with $42 million in AUM (long time ago). He drove a Hyundai Sonata. Got a job at a fund managing a billion. Ditched the car and runs to work and back. Uses Zipcar when they needed one. Paid $100K for preschool for his three kids. He's managing PE these days. One of those really fancy websites with a few pretty pictures and a phone number.

Silver is good. Blemishes will show up well, so then you can start a new thread about whether or not to advise your friend return it.

If your buddy is running a multimillion company, he should have a IT person and not be asking his buddy.

All depends what he does and what software is required. I literally run my international business travelling around the world with my iPad Pro 12.9”. It is rare for me to require anything more, while the built in SIM is invaluable at places where the WiFi is poor, or non-existent. Most business owners are looking at emails, documents, spreadsheets and online web systems and do not need powerful computers to do their job. Other people do the technical work that may require something more.

As backup for what? Meaning if he leaves his MBA at work or if the MBA gives trouble?
