PVD is just the process used to coat surfaces...DLC is one of the types of coating that can be used. There is no statement from what I’ve seen that the iphone x uses a DLC coating or not. Some have speculated that the X is also a DLC coating applied by the PVD process since Apple stopped using the DLC terminology with the Apple Watch series 1 and on. I would have liked to believe that, however I have my doubts....as the color of DLC is closer to black like the Space black Apple Watch....and I’m not sure that color can be changed into something like the space gray.

PVD coats are not all the same...some more durable than others...DLC being the best. But they can be pretty durable and more resilient to scratches than polished stainless steel. That being said if PVD coats are scratched deep enough, it will show the metal underneath. Polished stainless steel will tend to show micro scratches much easier....but can also be polished out with products like cap cod polishing cloths....which you can’t do with PVD.

I guess we’ll seen soon enough how durable the SG x band will be.

This is spot on. There is a lot of misunderstanding on this forum about PVD and DLC but this sums it up well.

Both will show scuff marks easily if not protected
But with the SG model the frame when scratches will show silver marks which will be more obvious compared to Silver model.

The main question is if there is any solution down the SG model? Can we polish is back to remove the scratches on the SG model?

No. By polishing it you will remove the coating.

The gray will show scratches on the back more because of the darker color. It's the same effect with car paint. Look at a white car and a black car in the sun, tell me which one looks to have more scratches.

The silver will show scratches less on the glass, to the casual observer, but more on the SS band around the device.

The reason why I am asking is because I have been using a black or grey phone all this time. Looking for a change.

Also the silver stainless steel on the IPhone X Silver will match my Stainless steel Apple Watch 2.

I know the Stainless steel will show scratches but will the silver one show less than the black Stainless steel on the Space Grey model?

Plan on getting a DBrand or Slickwraps to cover the back only. The frame will probably not be covered. Unless I can use 3M transparent tape to protect the frame.
I feel your pain. After wearing the link bracelet for so long its like I've become constantly aware of where my wrist is to avoid scratching my watch.

I do not think the glass will scratch easy. It will sure break if you drop it but it's pretty durable. The stainless steel band will be more prone to scratches and in the case of the black, chips.

I also think the glass at the back will not scratch easily unless you drop the phone.

The main concern is the frame of the phone. Which will show scratches more easily? Silver or Space Gray?

The silver model we can use the polish to make it look new over time while we can't do the same for the space Gray model?

Major scratches are a much bigger problem on the Space Grey than on Silver, but I suspect minor scratches will show sooner on Silver

My money is on the silver. I remember how easily those stainless steel backs on ipods and Apple Watch scratched. Its also the color I ordered but I plan on slapping a case on it from day 1. So hopefully I can minimize the scratches.
But what is the point of minimizing scratches if you cover everything up with a case anyway? You never even get to admire its beauty.

Transparent hard cases don't block anything from view. At least not in my opinion
Yes but makes the phone bulky.

Like to use a skin for the phone but this time only for the back to give it a special look.

The frame will look great exposed.

But then we can polish the silver frame?
Yeah. You can polish the silver but remember that you’re actually removing a thin layer of the silver while polishing so be careful not to overdo it.

A lot of people don’t know this and they think there’s some kind of a magic happening when using a polishing cloth.

Also, you cannot avoid the mess of leaving a bit of the polishing creme, after you rub, on the crevices of the phone. This can accidentaly get on the glass and remove the coatings if not properly addressed.

That’s why I chose the grey...as long as I don’t drop the phone, it will stay scratch free without polishing.

This is only a thought.

I am planning on using a transparent clear 3M film to cover the silver frame in the beginning. Then later after a couple of months can remove the transparent film around the frame.

Then get a slickwraps or Dbrand skin for the back.

There is a shop in HK where I normally get the transparent clear 3M protection for my phones. Will ask them if they can protect the frame. If yes then the Silver model is perfect for me.

I guess I can also protect the frame on the space Gray model but then I can't match my SS Apple Watch.

That's likely true, but it also depends how somebody treats their phone and if someone is using it within a case or not. Some cases can cause rubbing, which will inevitably scratch the bands on the iPhone X. But if it's anything like the Apple Watch Stainless model, is scratches relatively easy with very little effort.

I guess we will find out on Friday how easily the frames can be scratched.

I will contact the store on HK to check for the transparent clear film for the frame.

True it’s ok to do it a few times but when you use a polish, the cloth gets black and that’s the stainless steel coming off on to the cloth. If you polish too frequently, you will rub all the shine off

How about doing it once a month for a year?
