I really don’t care what Displaymate says, but I will say last year crowning the Samsung winning the best display was hands down the right choice.....If your going to use Displaymate from last year, you have to go with them this year. Can’t swap just because they didn’t say what you wanted.

Oh that was my point. If you put stock into DM's opinion, lets not forget that Samsung's displays have been voted best in the world until 2017. And The S8 was given an A+ this year.

The X was voted best calibrated display. And I agree. However, this does not mean that the note 8's screen is inferior in any way. Meaning no one should choose X because it was voted best display this year. DM's opinion is not the end all to ones choice of device.

Oh absolutely not. If you are buying a phone just because of DM’s rating, that is incredible stupid. I again that the Note 8 is no slouch, and is right there with the X. Honesty I think they are just as good as one another. It comes down to whether you want those colors that really stand out and are not as natural, or do you want a more muted color display with more natural (the way our eyes see the world in color) colors. I for one prefer the X’s muted colors. Can’t go wrong with either display though.

Samsung doesn't care. It's going to make billions of dollars with both. Wins either way.

Totally agree. In previous years, although Apple used Retina displays, I never felt as though my iPhone's display was inferior just because Samsung was voted best display. It all comes down to preference. For folks who keep score, I guess the DM's evaluation would be important.
According to Unbox Therapy, OnePlus 5T beats them both.

It all comes down to preference 🙂

Absolutely. I never once thought about switching because people said the display was better on the Samsung. Display is only part of Phone. Just like this year, I don’t think any Samsung users are switching the the X just because of the display.

First of all, who gives a damn, and second I don’t recall him saying in his review that the OnePlus 5T had a better display. Maybe I missed it, but that if he did that has to be one of the worse opinions he has put out there. A close second is his reason to not buy the X.

I really don’t care what Displaymate says, but I will say last year crowning the Samsung winning the best display was hands down the right choice. While I don’t like the inaccurate colors Samsung uses, they did have the best display. That however is not the case this year. Apple did it better while having more accurate colors. Android Nougat on the Note 8 is not a colour managed OS unlike iOS which results in a bottleneck for the Note screen as it isn't allowed to utilise the proper gamut it actually can utilise. . It would be interesting to see if the iPhone X would still win if Note 8 was running Oreo but Display mate wouldn't test it at that time. The only reason X wins is calibration and Oreo goes a long way toward accurate colours.

You are assuming it would not win if the Note 8 has Oreo. It does not matter if the Note 8 gets Oreo and proper gamut of colors. Samsung still over saturates colors on their screens. Maybe to you that is better, but I don’t like it at all. In terms of pure quality in sharpness, both the Note and X are right together. It comes down to your preference on color saturation on which you like better. I think it looks fake.

I am not saying it wouldn't win. I am saying the contest isn't fair as ios can utilise the full potential of that Samsung oled while Android cannot.

If you set the Note 8 to Basic Display mode, the colours can be made just as accurate as iPhone X. Samsung just doesn't use that mode by default because saturated screens are eye catching.

I don’t call that unfair. Samsung choose to run Android on their phone. They have to live with what Android uses, so I think it’s completely fair. Apple knows how to calibrate and use their software to make a screen look good.

You say that, but I don’t agree. I have tried the basic mode before, and to me the colors loss a ton of quality. It washes everything out way too much, and goes beyond looking natural. Again they know their audience. They want colors that pop and look crazy saturated on their phones. That is why it’s the default, and the way Samsung wants users to use the phone. The thing I love about my X, I don’t have to do a damn thing to make the screen look good. It came out of the box that way.

Not to mention their TV's. Most people think that 'torch' mode and over saturated colors is the way a TV should be viewed. Once they calibrate their TV they are disappointed at the loss of the 'pop' they had prior to the calibration. Samsung adopts this view with their phones. That's not to say I find the note 8's display horrible. I don't.

I don't have a X yet, but I so agree. Even with my 7+, to my eyes, my display is gorgeous. So much so, I do not see a huge leap with the X's display. But then that's just my eyes, and my opinion.

Totally agree! I have a tv from Samsung, and while I like the pop sometimes, a lot of the it’s too much for me. I also have used the Note in the past and the same can be said for that but to a much larger degree. The Over saturation is just too much for me.

Yeah I never mined the LCDs from Apple, but man these OLEDs are ever better. Seriously this has become my favorite display to look at of all my devices. Apple nailed it with this.

That's great 🙂 So glad you are enjoying the X. I decided to sit out this year, but I am all over the X2 or what ever its called in 2018!

I don’t blame you. I have been looking for a bigger display without the compromise of overall size, and that is what the X did for me. I originally got the 6 plus when it first came out, and ultimately hated if for the size. I then got the 6S and the the 7 (had to have the Space Black. Still my favorite iPhone color to date). I was left with a subpar battery and not as sharp display. I loved the size, but hated what Apple choose to offer (or lack of offering) for the smaller Phone. As soon as they announced the X, I knew that would be my next iPhone. Not because of FaceID, or no home button, or any of the new tech. I wanted a bigger and better screen without sacrificing overall size. This has been the prefect fit for me. Like I said, the screen quality is incredible, and the size is perfect. Oh and to add to that, this is the best battery life I have ever gotten in an iPhone. This is hands down my favorite iPhone to date dethroning the 3G (my first ever iPhone) and the 5S a very close second. It will be really hard for Apple to top this one for me.

Sorry for the small review. Just thought I would at least add some context to my thoughts on it.

I'm the opposite. I love the plus size and the HD Retina display. I quickly adapted to the plus size. And the battery life on my 7+ is amazing. Even now 1 year later.

Yep, I wish apple did not offer the customer less because of the size of the phone. I was glad when they released the iPad 10.5 and the 12.9 with exact specs. No need to worry about anything but screen size.

No apologies necessary. I am thoroughly enjoying the discussion 🙂

I just wish Apple would make the overall size of the plus smaller. I don’t think the plus next year will be any smaller, which is the barrier for me. If the bezels were smaller I might jump on it. It just never felt good in my hand. Other swear by it.

That was the best decision Apple made. There should be no compromises in choosing the smaller product. Sure you don’t get as much screen, but you know that going in. I love my iPad 10.5. It’s the second best display I have. The HDR for movies is amazing. I almost don’t ever use my 4K Samsung tv because the 10.5 is so good. Can’t watch an entire movie on my X though. It would be even more amazing.

Same here! I don’t understand why it has to be an either or discussion. I have been saying from the very beginning both the Samsung and iPhone look amazing. It comes down to which one you prefer in terms of colors. I will define the X though for people that want to say it’s inferior. That is simple not the case lol.

The X Plus next year will be the same size as the Plus but with a bezelless design

I'm not sure why people focus so much on this. Clearly the OLED display on the X has some major advantages over the LCD display on the 7 series. Blacks are perfect, contrast is very high, display is thinner, closer to the glass, the bezel is slim, etc. It's a nice improvement. We all know Apple chooses color accuracy over attention-grabbing calibrations that aren't accurate. To each his own.

But for me, choosing a smartphone always starts with the OS and ecosystem first, THEN I consider specs. I would not decide Apple vs Android over the display alone, unless Apple's displays suddenly were terrible or significantly behind others, because there are so many other factors that matter in picking a smartphone. Personally, there are a lot of things about Android I do not like, and would be hard-pressed to go that route. In any case, I'm very happy with the display on the X. I think it is stunning. This particularly stands out when you load a movie or photo with high contrast and bright colors.
