how is it that people are still spouting this nonsense?
By holding both of my phones next to each other...
how is it that people are still spouting this nonsense?
how is it that people are still spouting this nonsense?
Is this correct?
Galaxy note 8 recorded at 1200 nits
iPhone X recorded at 625 nits
However, this site says differently:
https://www.tomsguide.com/us/iphone-x-oled-screen-vs-pixel-2-note-8,review-4807.html
And yet Displaymate confirms the 1200 nits.

Toms guide does sound like an apple commercial. I will go with Displaymate.
If you actually read the displaymate article, you'll find the 1200 nits value is extremely situational. They report peak brightness values w/ 1% of the screen being white w/ auto boost on - this is absolutely not representative of day to day use. In day to day use, the iPhone will be brighter. Displaymate itself says as much.
The issue is that people aren't taking the time to actually understand displaymate's (admittedly complicated) data.

I was thinking the same thing. People keep throwing that garbage 1200 nit number around when the chances of a user seeing are little to none. If I have learned anything from Apple over the years, they are not being something to market hardware wise (won’t even discuss iOS and macOS because we all know what those are right now) until they know for sure it’s the best or one of the best in the market. Examples Retina display, TouchID, FaceID, and now the OLED. They just don’t bring garbage to their products. They knew they had something special with this screen.
I agree the nits measurement comparison is probably apples to oranges. Lab measurements vs real life etc. I don't get caught up in that, unless I'm comparing two products where everything else is so close that the particular spec is the only real difference.
To me it's simple. The X has a terrific display. Best yet on an iPhone. Potentially better than Samsung phones depending on your point of view on calibration. It's calibrated for accuracy. I prefer that. It is plenty capable of displaying punchy, highly saturated images if you happen to pull one up (say by playing the latest Lego movie in HDR). It's a great screen.
Look at this video on brightness. Just jump to 5.40 min mark and you will see how much brighter note8 display than ipx.
Note is still better display. It is much sharper than ipx. Indoor the brightness is a moot point but in outdoor when brightness is critical, note8 just leaves ipx in the dust.
You’re kidding, right? iPhone X is clearly brighter, the guy even says it in the video.
Sorry, it is at 6.20min mark in the video, when he shines a bright light on the 2 phones and note8 brightness goes way higher than ipx.
Indoor it doesn't matter. Both phones are equal. Nobody will turn up 100% brightness. And note8 is noticeably sharper.

Are you serious? The guy shines an LED on the Samsung with auto brightness on, but nothing to the X. The same will happen with the X. If you turn auto brightness on and put it in direct sunlight, it gets brighter as well. Crazy right? Samsung fan boys are insufferable.
Note 8 can hit around 800 nits or so in bright light for around 10s. And 1200 in a small area for a short time. iPhone doesn’t do something it can’t sustain.
Full screen sustained brightness is 600 vs 400 nits in favor of the iPhone.
So you show us a video where the author mentions how iPhone has a brighter screen three times, also says X has better color reproduction and better sharpness - and shows one case where Samsung does the peak brightness thing instead of sustained (you do know it can’t hold this brightness longer than 10 or so seconds, right? Useful for a quick glance, but that’s it) and you claim the Samsung screen is better?
Sammy is doing this all the time. TVs too. Peak vs sustained. In reality, while surfing the web, watching a movie, etc. inside or outside, iPhone X will be around 150 nits brighter. That’s just how it is. That’s not even important, but it is how it is. Note does not have a brighter screen.
As for sharpness, I don’t really know what you mean. Both look equally sharp to my eyes, but if you can see the difference, fine.
I just like the iPhone X screen more, and it’s not even close. That’s subjective. I totally get that some people prefer the Note. And while I don’t think it’s important that X is brighter - it’s how things are.
If you like the Note screen more - that’s all that should matter to you, man. I don’t mean this sarcastically.
Great good for the Note 8. You can hit 1200 nits in less than 1% of the time anyone ever uses it. Again the video was a joke because we can’t see truly how bright the iPhone gets. Auto brightness in direct light both get brighter. Stop spitting out these useless numbers and give hard real world evidence. The video was trash, and the numbers game is trash.

Some here goes on and on about brightness. Yes, indoor if you turn both phones to 100%, ipx is brighter but that is a moot point. But note8 brightness can go far beyond 100% that user can set using the brightness slider. In sunlight where it really matters note8 is better.
And you are wrong. Note8 can hold that super brightness as long as sunlight is intense. My S8+ works that way in sunlight.
Look at the text. Ipx text looks more fuzzy than note 8.
Even in that trash video, the author admits the iPhone is a better display 🙂
I still claim it comes down to taste, but I love how Samsung fans are trying to paint Note display as objectively better.
What small area? In the video, the whole note8 screen lit up brighter.

Read the comment fully before posting. He was saying the guy in the video still after that said the iPhone was a better overall display. Brightness is only part of quality of the display.
The guy in the video, he is a kid who has only used Iphones. So?
The point is Note8 has the brighter screen when it is needed not when it is not needed unlike Ipx
. This makes all the difference in the world. Now I need to return my X and go get a Note 8 because it might get brighter then X in direct sunlight. Seriously who gives a damn if the Note 8 gets slightly brighter outside? My X is plenty fine for me anywhere I use it. This is pointless to me.Yeah since I was taking anything this kid said into account.
Yeah that is such a fantastic point. This makes all the difference in the world. Now I need to return my X and go get a Note 8 because it might get brighter then X in direct sunlight. It is pointless to say color accuracy too. Displaymate said in Basic mode, Note 8 gets "Very Good" accuracy. So "Very Good" becomes cartoonish/poor/over-saturated according to Ifans...that's just pure bias and hypocritical. What is not bias is Note8 can get MUCH brighter than ipx in sunlight and that's fact.
