I look at it like that...Look at how much you pay per GB

$199 \ 16GB = $12.43 per GB

$299 \ 32GB = $9.34 per GB

$399 \ 64GB = $6.23 per GB

So i would say the 64GB has the most value!!

Except when you try to sell it on Craigslist. 64gb version will def lose you more money than if you were to own a 16gb version...

While I don't disagree that first $200 gets you an iPhone the second $200 just gets you 48 gigs of storage.

You could get two complete iPhones for the money so clearly the 16 gig is the value.

That said the only thing I was hoping was to keep two price points 32 at $199 and 64 at $299. Apple was very shrewd to add a third price point because they make a killing on the 64 gig.

However as has been said depends on your needs. I have 32 on my iPhone 4 and still have about 8 free. But I expect the video and pics to take a lot more room and the camera is my favorite part of the new phone.

For every person on this forum struggling to get a subsidized phone or bending over backwards to swing the basic model there is another who can afford any phone they want but we don't talk about that as much because it sounds like bragging.

Apple know their market and knows what price points it will bare.

Yeah, you can buy 2 16GB phones for 1 64GB phone, but that's just silly since then you'll have to pay for 2 voice & data plans when you only need one. Not a very good value.

Yes, getting what you need is always the best value, but since the storage is not upgradable, Apple9to5 showed why 64GB is the best value and you will get all that back and more when you sell it to buy the iP5 next year. There will be a ton of people looking to upgrade their 32GB model.

$100 for 16G of RAM is quite a markup.

And your point is?

Congratulations Apple! You've made a product that adding a $5 part nets you a $100 price increase that people are willing to pay as evidenced by how these things are flying off the virtual shelves!

They'd charge $200 if they could get away with it. Our choice as consumers is to buy elsewhere.

Don't know about you, but I chose with my wallet... :)

Keep in mind 16GB is actually only 14Gb of actual available space. So if you needed 14 gb you're still SOL. The 32 is the best choice if youre planning on loading up apps, lots of music, and photos/vid. I think 70% of the people will not need more than 16gb

The way I see it is you spend more now on more storage, then in a year you can sell it for more because it has more storage. So the extra storage comes in real handy if you want to keep a lot of videos and movies on your phone.

The 64gb is the best overall value as you get 4x the storage of the 16g fir only 2x the price. In the end if you sell your phone at the next rollout you will break even.

Trust me it is easy to resell an iPhone

Nice way to analyze if you are buying meat or produce or gas.

But, in this situation you have many other factors. If you take and/or store no video, and few pictures, even 16gb is a better value. Having all that storage is a waste of money in that case.

On the other hand, if you need the storage, then even at a higher cost per GB is great .

I think 32GB is the best value. Maybe it's true that storage shouldn't cost 100 extra to jump from 16 to 32, but following a different logic... If you get an iPhone (or iPod for that matter), and it turns out to be too small of a capacity your screwed. You can't change the internal storage capacity, or return it or anything. Also, everyone knows that the real life storage capacity is always 1.5-2GB less than what Apple advertises due to the OS, and other things. The way I was looking at it is if I throw on a crap load of photos, start recording a lot of 1080p video, will I have be good for the next year. In all honesty I would have got the 64GB but I'm waiting for the iPhone 5 to go all out. 399 + tax is a lot of damn money for med student to spend on any phone (particularly one that isn't a different exterior design that the previous) especially when I'm replacing an iPhone 4 with a cracked screen...

The 16GB is not that good of a value if you need 17GB of storage space....

Just sayin'.

Neither is the 64 if you need 12...

Best value depends on YOUR needs so it'll vary.

Paying less per GB you won't use doesn't make it a better value.

Let's say you have a $90 a month plan and can upgrade after 15 months. That's $1350 plus the phone. So depending on memory, you will pay $1549, $1649, or $1749 during that timeframe. I can get 4x the memory for 13% more. If I am away from my computer for a while and shooting video, I'll value that 13% extra.

ITunes Match

Skimmed through the responses so forgive me if already mentioned.

Unless I am not understanding iTunes Match correctly, it will allow you to store your music (even that not bought through iTunes) and stream from the cloud for $25/year.

This seems to be a better deal than paying for the extra on board memory, unless internet access if hard to come by

I agree, but it's better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

It's not really wasted as you can likely get a premium on resale.

And not having it when you need it, well, there's only one fix for that. Getting a new iPhone.

the only reason apple is not adding a micro sd slot is because they know that people will pay $100 more for 16 more gbs of memory. some people will pay $200 more for for 48 more gbs of memory.
+1

Since the iPhone 3GS, Apple has now sold 32GB of storage space for $299 WITH contract. That is three generations now.

I have now have an unlocked Nexus One bought for $100. I can make it a 32GB phone with a microSD card for under $40 on Amazon. A $160 savings not including taxes which should make over $200 savings and I also don't have to deal with a two-year contract.

16GB is the best bargain simply because it is the CHEAPEST by saving the most. And the fact iCloud can help solve the space issues for $25 per year.

But I say MOST (but not all) people will need over 16GB especially if video and games can take up the most space. I have a 32GB iPhone 4 as seen with my sig, but I still shudder to think of paying $299 again and again for a 32GB iPhone when prices for 16GB and 32GB microSD cards are falling and Google Music Beta is at least FREE right now.

Wait until Christmas in two months and the 16GB iPhone 4S will likely have a sale of $149 brand new similar to what I saw last December with the 4. I never saw prices drop on the 32gigs all that much if at all.

There is no one size fits all answer. The best value is the least expensive model that fits your needs. A $199 16GB model is expensive if it's filled up inside a couple months. A $399 64GB model is a bargain if you need that much space. Every has different needs.

Now recalc that for your cost of GB used. I have 5GB free on my 16GB phone. I keep music on MacPro and iPad only. So no reason for me to pay for unused storage.

I got the 16GB. 32GB would have best fit my needs, but money-wise, 16GB fit my budget. I have an old 3G for 3+ years now, and it is going. The Wifi on it is broken, and the phone is just too painfully slow.

Thank you all for your input and great feedback, after reading all this responses here is what I can conclude,

If you can get along with just 16GB of data then 16GB iPhone is best value, if you need anything more than 16GB dont hesitate buying 64GB version as that is next best bang for your buck. 32GB is goo compromise but you are leaving too much money on table in that case. Think it this way
$200 buys u 16GB of device,
if you pay extra $100 it buys you extra 16GB of data (takes to 32GB)
if you pay extra $200 it buys you extra 48GB of data (takes to 64GB)

so if you can survive on 16GB that is best thing, if not go for 64GB. Dont just throw away your money on Steve's shrine - he has lot of it. :). Think of it this way you are in negotiation with Apple, you show money they show you storage. At the end you want to make sure you can squeeze out most amount of storage for least amount of money and 64GB fits that bill if you cannot survive on 16GB storage.

The way I look at it, if your spending ~ $80 (as an example) on a plan already then over the course of a 2 year contract your looking at $1920+$200 for the phone. It is an extra $200 to jump from 16GB to 64GB.

It may only cost apple $20 more in hardware, but the ability to have 4 times the storage in a phone you will use daily for 2 years is definitely worth the difference if you have even a slight hesitation that you will run out of space, especially considering how much you are paying in the long run.

I'm debating this myself. The memory upgrade prices feel like quite a ripoff to me, but since I have no choice outside of not buying an iphone, Apple has me. I'll probably go 32GB because I don't think 16 is enough and as awesome as it would be to have 64GB if storage, I can't stomach (over)paying that much.

I think by getting 32GB you are overpaying relatively more compared to getting 64GB, you are getting 16GB for $100 extra instead of 48GB for $200 extra.
