I normally use Safari, but after reading the reviews on iCab in this thread I'm going to give that a shot this evening.

It's the tabbed browsing and the effortless switching between tabs that makes iCab such a pleasure, everything else is simply a bonus.

Just tried out Puffin. It is faster than iSwifter in terms of the UI and panning and so forth. Also, unlike iSwifter, it works with HULU. Only downside is the framerate of video and the fact that you can't make it full screen.

For any non flash based stuff, i use Safari.

Me too.

Just bought iCab and read thru the instructions, it seems to be a very nice browser so will start using it in next few days as soon as I transferred the bookmarks.

My problem with iCab (and I really do like it, and use it most of the time despite this) the scrolling is choppy in some websites..

Puffin browser just updated. For the ipad it has tabs and option for full video. And yes you can watch Hulu

Flash video on Puffin is very choppy and the audio is like a second or two delayed. Doesn't matter how fast my internet connection is.

It's a good browser, but the Flash video is so bad, it's worthless.

I'll try the update and edit my post if the performance is better.

Not wanting to hijack this thread but I just wonder if someone could help me with Atomic Browser?

I have been using it for a few days and love it, but I am finding that sometimes it acts like all my "cookies" have been deleted. I am no longer logged in to any forums and I get offers from places like "AVForums" to use their app.

At first it wasn't a problem, but it's happened so many times now that it's starting to get boring.

Any ideas?

To follow up...

After 2 5-hour sessions with iCab Mobile, I have mixed feelings.

Love the extensive customization options available, you could pretty much set the browser up anyway you like. Import bookmarks took a whole 30-sec from start to finish, very simple. No complaint...

However, the main reason I want to try change from Safari was for the hand gestures since I love using the Magic Trackpad. The swipe gestures in iCab were not reliable, don't always work. So I ended up changing to tap gestures and completely ignore the swipe gestures.

So it works, but I am not completely happy but will continue to use it for a while.

If you like to customize your browser, you will like iCab. I just don't like how the hand gestures work...

i use mercury.. dropbox support etc. surprised at the low amount of votes for it.

Hi Gents,

Mark my words...

Sleipnir is light years ahead of any browser on the iPad. The interface and design principles have turned any notion on what a tablet browser should be on it's head. And it's free, try it now - and thank me later. (http://www.fenrir-inc.com/global/iphone/sleipnir-mobile.html)

Why you wouldn't use it at the moment :

- No dropbox integration
- No simple authentication

Why you would use it :

- Complete rendered page caching for low memory conditions
- Fastest navigation experience available due to design principles
- Sexy

Not enough people are aware off it, it's a Japanese creation. Bring it to the top gents! and hopefully it will become a complete solution by the next version.

Tell me if I'm right or wrong.

boy, it's a beautiful app but it's slower than safari an it's noticeable.

Hmm, no noticeable speed difference on ipad2. The extra grunt may mask it. Certainly Atomic and Mercury are slower than Sleipnir for me.

well, where is the full screen mode on the Ipad, searched and no find...

other than that....no touch gestures for back and forward...it takes tremendous space...so far nice...but not impressed...

No redeeming features at all? To me it's no Swiss army knife, but what it does, it does without equal. Perhaps the fullscreen and custom gestures are possible with larger user base feedback?

iCab is great, but the speed difference with Safari since 4.3 is a bit to large. I'll come back to it once the javascript restrictions get worked out.

Today I installed the new version of Opera and I must say that I am extremely impressed. It's incredibly fast and smooth with good background tab support. I need to play with it some more to fully grasp it pros and cons. Unfortunatly the fonts render a bit too small on my iPhone, but it may become the goto browser on my iPad. (hmm, no auto correct in text fields?)

Wirelessly posted (Opera/9.80 (iPhone; Opera Mini/6.13548/24.854; U; en) Presto/2.5.25 Version/10.54)

Im now using opera mini since it has a cool tab system and is fast. Also it saves you data if you have a 3G.

I use iCab. It truly makes the iPad feel more like a computer than a large iPhone. Combine that with the zippiness of the iPad 2. It makes the browsing experience all the more worthwhile. Moreover, it is consistent with the look and feel of iOS, unlike other browsera which have ugly UIs.

Now if only there were a way to manage the default browser ( one of the reasons I'm waiting on the iPad 2 jailbreak ).

I was dubious but it didn't hurt a download being free and I'm actually quite surprised. I see what you mean about the UI — it's very nice. Instead of just taking the normal browser concepts we've had for years, it rethinks it and executes it very well indeed.

I'm going to try it a bit longer and see what happens.

Edit: Video demo of the browser: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gmNbZSo3Cy4

I've posted a few suggestions on the forum. If there are more fans of Sleipnir mobile perhaps you can express yourself on there to give the developers some cudos and suggestions :

http://public.fenrir.co.jp/en/community/viewtopic.php?t=9076

As far as the nitty gritty I've posted the following suggestions

Full screen ability for iPad, horizontal or vertical

Scroll bar for fast scrolling for iPad

Simple Authentication - e.g. for MS Outlook Webmail, some routers, etc. and ability to save the information

Dropbox/Local Download integration - files direcly loaded into the storage via dialog download confirmation. Can setup default location e.g. Dropbox folder or Local to iPad

Holding link on page results in new tab - but there is no transition animation like from bookmarks or search engine. Makes it difficult to guage if action occured when hand is obscuring the tabs

More gestures - love the L for closing. How about ability to navigate back or forward e.g. Up, Left for back, Up, Right for forward

URL - love the context menu, can it also have paste url please?

+1

I have been using iCab for about two weeks now on both my ipad and iphone 4. I think it has some great features, but it's not polished

I downloaded the new opera mini on my iphone yesterday and I must say i'm really impressed. This is by far the fatest browser in the iphone. The tabs implementation works better then iCab too imo

Scrolling is also smooth

The only thing i dont like about opera mini is that sometimes it doesnt always complete an action. Like you may have to click a link/button a second time in order for it to register. Maybe this will be fixed soon with an update

Will download this new opera mini for my ipad later

I've been using it as my primary browser since yesterday and I'm surprised at how FAST it is! I'm on an iPad gen 1 so any extra speed I can get is very welcomed, but at times it feels like it even beats out Safari—And this is with a handful of tabs open!

I have emailed some suggestions and bug fixes to the dev. A few of your suggestions are good ideas but I'm not so sure about adding a scrollbar, more gestures, more buttons, etc. What I dislike about some of the other browsers now is this overload of extra buttons which are unnecessary or can be carried out in another way. (The new Sub-Sub-Menus in iCab is an example of this.)

What I like about Sleipnir is the simplicity. To open a link you tap it, to open the link as a background tab, you hold it for a second. No other browser does this; instead they give you 13 options for how you want to see it, and so I sometimes end up push the wrong button accidentally, and it now takes me longer to do what I need to do. I like that Sleipnir developers are going a different path from the other browsers.
