I've been using it as my primary browser since yesterday and I'm surprised at how FAST it is! I'm on an iPad gen 1 so any extra speed I can get is very welcomed, but at times it feels like it even beats out Safari—And this is with a handful of tabs open!

I have emailed some suggestions and bug fixes to the dev. A few of your suggestions are good ideas but I'm not so sure about adding a scrollbar, more gestures, more buttons, etc. What I dislike about some of the other browsers now is this overload of extra buttons which are unnecessary or can be carried out in another way. (The new Sub-Sub-Menus in iCab is an example of this.)

What I like about Sleipnir is the simplicity. To open a link you tap it, to open the link as a background tab, you hold it for a second. No other browser does this; instead they give you 13 options for how you want to see it, and so I sometimes end up push the wrong button accidentally, and it now takes me longer to do what I need to do. I like that Sleipnir developers are going a different path from the other browsers.

Absolutely agree with you. I was concious of everything you said and pretty much limited it to only 2 more gestures that are basically reverse of the current L. And the context menu addition is only limited to the url address bar for quick action.

But I hear ya, any more than my suggestions (which may be too much already) and I think it would kill it's intuitive clean nature.

Atomic and iCab. Hate the fact that I can't set one of them as my default browser (waiting impatiently for iPad2 jailbreak). Yegon summed up Safari perfectly as My First Browser, it's truly awful.

Safari is faster than Atomic? I switched to Atomic because it was faster (still running the older version). And if you think it is ugly, well, I can understand that somewhat, but unless you need to enter a URL or search, you never need to leave full screen, so the ugliness is greatly minimized. It gives me:

  • font scaling
  • gesture nav + transparent nav buttons in FS
  • handy search engine selector
  • faster loading (iPad 1, older Atomic)

Safari "looks good"? Give me a break, it looks like crap, like it has for eight years.

I'm guessing everyone here feels the same as me and really wants Apple to allow you to set the default browser.

Are you not fed up that you have YOUR browser all set up with your favorites how you like it, and yet, whenever some link kicks in, it's Safari that gets loaded up.

Do you think they will give us this basic feature in iOS 5?

As vocal as the 3rd Party users are you would think Mobile Safari would have ranked last.

I've tried iCab, SkyFire and at present using Atomic. I have to honestly say that I still prefer Safari.

Maybe not everyone, a few people seem to really like Safari. It is all a matter of taste, needs and work habits. So, those people who are ok with Safari or never go to the trouble to discover alternatives see no reason why we should need to set the default browser (or video player, or...)

Me, I would like to have the modern equivalent of InternetConfig, that would allow every network default, as well as some local defaults, to be specified. What if someone comes up with a mail app that works with my server, f'instance?

Not a chance.

The recent update to Opera Mini is really great! Safari used to be my primary, however this recent Opera update is giving Safari a run for its money.

Well of course, it goes without saying, those people who are happy to accept the limited features of Safari would not be bothered about a settings option to change the default browser on the iPad, in the same way you can on PC's and Mac's

However, given there must be literally millions of people who have over the past year downloaded and are using one of the many other browsers as they enjoy the extra features, then it would seem logical to conclude that almost all these many millions of people would prefer their chosen browser to open up when they tap on an email link for example, and not Safari which they chose not to use.

I did speak to the DEV of one of the big name browsers and he hold me, he had contact with some other devs and they had send requests to Apple asking for this option to be added to the iPad for a nicer user experience.

I installed this new browser, but it's not as fast as safari and for some reason (maybe only for me) safari stopped working as soon as it was installed. Anyone else have these problems?

Safari is still working fine for me. Try restarting your iPad (hold sleep button).

In regards to Apple allowing the setting our own default browser, I see no reason they wouldn't do this at some point. You've gotta be patient though. Maybe it'll be iOS 5.

I try and I try, but Safari's archaic way of handeling multiple pages is about as outdated as you can get, and a royal pain in the ass. IE, for crying out loud, finally had to admit that tabs were the way to go.

I suppose Apple, at this point, is just trying to prove a point by refusing to get with the times.

So I downloaded sleipnir and I'm really liking it. I may be stupid but after playing around with it for about ten minutes i can't seem to find out how to add a bookmark to the toolbar up top, in the same area as the default "useful" bookmark. Can anybody help?

So click the star next to the urls, then you can organise the categories under the Inbox when in edit mode. Check the youtube video posted previously by EssentialParado.

Yeah, as Muzzakus said, touch the star to the right of the URL. It took me a while to find that too. It has a completely different bookmarking paradigm to what I'm used to, with the labeling and such, but I'm quite liking it...

Tabs predate Safari's method so Apple's way is neither archaic nor outdated.

Ok I'll try it out when I get home tonight. Thanks guys

Has anyone here tried the new opera ipad app? Its great!

I really dont like the traditional tabbed view of icad/atomic etc. It takes up too much room and is too fiddly. I love the tab system of opera, and the open in background tab feature too.

I dont know if its slower than safari. It does feel like it, but i timed load of a few sites on both apps and it theres nothing in it. Only downside is there's no spellcheck!
