I think it's best for Apple to just cancel it save themselves further embarrassment and headache trying to figure out a solution.

Cancel it and move on to iPhone 5.

now I'm sad

Despite strong sales, the iPhone 4 can be seen as a design blunder on many levels.

Totally agreed. Proximity sensor problem, antenna problem, now problem with the color white. It's definitely Apple's version of Vista in terms of the things they got wrong with the iPhone 4.

..... how about Apple gives up on the white project (although that is why i didn't get an iphone 4 yet) and just release the iPhone 5 which will probably have nothing new besides a SSD drive/chip giving us real space.

And can we focus on giving us ios 4.2 for iPad so the iPad will finally not be an out of date product.

It was only a matter of time before this happened.. How much money can they spend trying to fix all these 'issues'. I am sure everyones just fed up trying to get it right.

brought to its knees......by the color white.

really? brought to its knees....well, if by knees you mean the second most valuable company in the entire country next to Exxon..then man i wish somebody would do the same for me.

for a company that pioneers difficult manufacturing processes (unibody) and is undoubtedly competent, i trust that its more difficult than you think.

..that makes no sense. only the trolls consider it a blunder -- the rest of the consuming smartphone market has no problem w/ it as a product, thus the best-ever sales.

Well this makes a lot more sense than releasing it in Spring. When I heard that yesterday, I thought it was a misunderstanding of the white model being pushed into iPhone 5.

This is one of the best stories this week! :)

It epitomises whatever this new gadget mania is about - waiting, anticipation, putting some bloody piece of tech in a place above so many other things...

...and then being let down. :) Anyway, it's a faulty phone. You know that, Jobs knows that, everybody knows that. If you buy one, people will annoy the crap out of you by asking about how you're holding it, while you'll have so many calls dropped due to that crap proximity sensor. But don't drop your phone yet, it will shatter to pieces. That gorilla glass is seriously endangered!

The only people I see with a white 3GS is teens (mostly female) and women (20+). The black IP4 is sleek and actually looks good.

That's just silly. Vista's problems were real and universal enough to impact sales and give it an Edsel/New Coke-like reputation.

iPhone 4, despite its glitches, sells like gangbusters and has a fine reputation (outside of special-interest communities like this one.)

Further, the difference between Apple and Microsoft is Apple realizes white isn't working and DOESN'T SELL IT. Microsoft sold Vista despite its crappiness.

Whats the point if they are going to release it in the spring, a new iPhone would be right around the corner at that point and it wouldn't make sense to release it then. This is probably the best move, however they should have a white iPhone at launch for iPhone 5.

The problem from what I hear is that white plastic cracks a lot more than black. We remember the fiasco with the previous white iPhone that would get cracks. Something about the dyes or the process used to make it. I am sure apple wants to make sure that won't happen again. With all the problems the iPhone 4 has it does not need any more problems.

I always buy my electronics in a color other than white... white also gets dirty easily and has a tendency to discolor, not nice if I just spent a huge chunk of money on a product...

It's painted on the back off the glass.

If you applied a coat of black primer, you would end up with a black iPhone.

That makes no sense. Maybe you didn't understand what I meant.

I'm saying 2 coats or so of black primer(to make it opaque) then after it dries, apply the white paint. I fail to see how you would end up with a black iPhone by doing that...

It's a good thing that you're not in charge of sorting out the white iPhone production problems.
