I wouldn't be surprised if AT&T offers early upgrades for existing black iPhone owners as a way of holding on to subs.

^ not saying this would be smart for either party btw.

iPhone 4? They're selling a different colored one almost a year later?
Nah i kid, but really i think the poll speaks for itself.
I'm saving up for the iPhone 5.

why even bother coming out with a white iphone for this year? Does anyone really care anymore?

Because it will make them a ton of money and they want to squeeze money out of any stranglers who are still waiting for it.

Well, I think this is the best proof that we could get that there won't be a radically designed iPhone 5 this year, but an iPhone 4GS or something like that. It just doesn't seem logical that Apple would invest time and money in the production of a cellphone type that will be obsolete in less than 5 months.

Imagine the outrage when all these people buy white iPhones now, and three months later a new model is introduced (with a white option too).

Reason it isn't a disgrace: The white enclosure apparently was causing trouble with the camera due to light leakage. You would most likely be calling that disgraceful if they had indeed released a 500$ phone with that rather huge flaw, so I guess they can't win.

Your Missing the point, it is a complete waste for apple to release this phone in this color.

#1 - it has taken them almost a year to work out the paint issues with this thing meaning that they have been putting R&D money effertlessly into a phone color, all for what?

#2 - If you are the few that dont have a cover of a "bumper" for your phone, then you will get to show off your cool new white phone which will take on every scratch and every dirt stain you can imagine.

#3 - If they have worked so long and hard on this new color, to mass produce it and ship it all over the world, just before they are going to release a new product, within 6 months (approximately) dont you think they would just for go the ip4 white and just apply it to the IP5 and get prepared for that?

#4 - WHO CARES, who literally waited this long for the white Iphone? honestly who in their right minds would have held out to wait for this phone. If someone was going to get an Iphone I dont think the lack of color selection was a deterrent.

What a waste of money, time and hype... this is honestly one of the worst ideas apple has had, or do they actually just have so much money they can afford a huge bill for a product that was either going to be purchased or not regardless of the color.

1: The R&D is far from wasted when they intend making white iPhone 4S/5/6/7/8....

2: Glass doesn't stain

3: 6mth is plenty time to sell bucket loads of these.

4: Over 11% of people reading this thread care, and another 5% are still thinking about it.

I know the reason, or the supposed reason (who knows, Apple has been as tight lipped as ever on the issue) . If true, its a disgrace it made it to the keynote presentation, without the issue being identified or a reasonable fix found. I don't care how you square it - being 10 months late for a device who has an average life of 12 months is utter incompetence and hence disgraceful.

Hats off for Apple sticking to it, but that does not take away from the fact that they should never have made the promise w/o a better understanding of production issues. The iPhone 4 design has been around since at least January 2010, per spy shots of the iPad before release. So, its not as if the design was so new that they could claim there was no time to identify the issue until after the June 2010 keynote by Steve Jobs.

This was the first iPhone, and quite possibly the first phone in general, whose enclosure is made almost entirely of glass, besides the buttons and metal band. This is an issue that likely never came up in the past because the white paint on glass thing never really mattered before. I find it entirely plausible that they thought it wouldn't bleed as badly as it seems to.

Apple probably knows how many people buy iPhones so late in the release cycle, and they obviously still decided that it was worth releasing the white version at this time. I think that this might actually make quite a lot of people buy a white one now rather than wait for the iPhone 5, which isn't even guaranteed to appear in June.

Ugh, I'm glad I gave up on Apple and got an HTC... I was waiting out for the white iPhone 4 and it just never came. 10 months after the launch and I don't think I want one at all now.

I'll get a white iPhone 5... if it doesn't come out on day 1 in white, I won't get one at all, I don't want to be left waiting again.

I have a black iPhone 4 but I am gonna list it on ebay and get the white one.

I'm gonna do this partly because I have wanted the white since day 1 and I want a change having had the black since launch... Doesn't sound logical to most I know but hey I don't care!

Secondly, having sold many iPhones on ebay, I know that the white versions sell well and when it comes to the time to sell again shortly before the iPhone 5 comes out (in say September) - the white will do better than the black would.

All in all I expect to pay around £80 for the switch from black to white and, as I say, I expect to get a better price for the white when it comes to sell in the future.

Still, a completely well thought out, illogical decision to most I know I know lol!

I can imagine that Apple provides detailed specs to the manufacturers of the glass and that there is a bidding process involved. That means that any deviation from the provided specs after production will have to be corrected at the cost and time of the manufacturer, not Apple.

If this is actually the case, than the manufacturer can even be held accountable for the loss in sales.

More likely it was Apple's fault for specifying either a nearly unachievable spec or for giving a bad material specification.

What ya'll are forgetting is that people buy iPhones every day... all year long.

If Apple sold 18.65 million iPhones this past quarter... that works out to over 207,000 a day. Let that number sink in for a minute. :D

So, when the white iPhone appears on store shelves this week... there will be a fair amount of people who buy them.

Don't forget... on each day there are millions of people who are eligible to get a new phone... and the white iPhone is yet another option for them.

you should add a choice in the poll "I Already have a White iPhone"
since some already do, :D
you know .. the white transformation kit ;)

I agree, did this a long time ago. Already had it for 6 months :)

This means the ip5 will be delayed at least 6 months. Big mistake Apple, the galaxy s2 will be in the market in 1 month, and the white model should have been launched 3 months after the black model, not now. Everybody is waiting for an update phone, not a "white coloured" one, with old hardware and same price. Bad movement, i'm afraid.

With all rumor-eyes looking toward the next generation iPhone 5, it's not clear how much demand there is for the white iPhone 4 which is now 10 months late from the original launch. So, here's a poll to see who is planning on buying a white iPhone 4.
Unless anyone is willing to pay crazy early termination fees to replace the same model phone they already have (just in a different color), knowing on top of that that it's about to be outdated, who in their right mind would even consider it? Dumb poll.

Confirmation on Irish Vodafone website

The white iPhone 4 is listed as sold out (previously only the black iphone was listed). More confirmation I guess!
