I don't have a Touch, so I didn't vote. However, if I did, I would have bought the apps no questions asked. $20 for 5 apps seems pretty reasonable to me.

$20 for five apps that should have been included in the first place and that new buyers will get for FREE? Sorry, but that doesn't seem reasonable to me at all. Basically I'm being punished because I went out and bought an iPod before MWSF. Silly me.

You paid for an iPod Touch that you knew did not have the five new apps on it, and that's exactly what you got. Stop whining.

Just because most of you have the $20 to blow on a couple of apps that the touch should have had in the first place doesn't magically blow this whole thing into being a fair move. For me, $20 is money I could be using on food or gas. The Touch is nice, but not that nice. I'll keep mine jailbroken and at 1.1.2.

So you have no problem buying a $399 toy (an iPod is harly necessary for your survival), but when it comes to another $20 you're suddenly a starving communist?

It's amazing how little value people attribute to software. Without the original software, your iPod Touch is a useless brick that isn't even good for picking your teeth.

My only guess is that people that paid $20 for these few programs simply don't understand what you are capable of obtaining if you jailbreak.

I was quite apprehensive about jailbreaking for quite a while before I did it, but after I did I was amazed by all the possibilities.

I suppose it depends on what you want from your iPod touch... for me, I want a mini entertainment center, and I certainly have that with the jailbroken apps.

I've said it many times before: I can't understand why Apple isn't embracing the many applications that one can have after jailbreaking. I bought the Touch just to see what it was like -- I really intended on returning it -- and after I jailbroke I decided to return the iPod anyway................. and buy the 16db version because I love it so much.

Mine was a holiday gift, actually. Good job trying to validate yourself, though.

And make no assumptions about me attributing worth to software; I think this is just a balls move on Apple's part. "Let's take this stuff thats already on the iPhone, pack it up and sell it to people for an extra $20! People are certainly willing to buy it just to justify themselves."

I like my 'Pod jailbroken, because I can install pretty much whatever I want to do whatever I need, without somebody forcing my hand (and my wallet) as to what I can have or not have.

"Starving communist," really. :p

One of Apple's key strengths is that they have complete control over both the hardware, the OS and most of the software. This ensures a high level of stability and compatibility, in contrast to the world of PCs and Windows where the myriad of third party hardware and software combinations, despite Microsoft's efforts, makes it impossible to guarantee stability and compatibility. Apple is far from perfect (lord knows Leopard has its fair share of bugs), but at least you know who to blame and where to send your angry rants. This complete control that Apple maintains, has its downsides as well because they don't put much effort into protecting the system against the whims of third parties. Windows may be more unstable than OSX, but it's also more rugged, due simply to the fact that it will have to put up with all sorts of weird hardware and software combinations, bizarre mixes of old and new, so it ships with 20,000 drivers and is backward compatible to a ridiculous degree. OSX is more like the boy in the bubble, it dies if you sneeze on it, but usually stays in perfect health because it's protected inside the Apple bubble.

Therefore I believe that many Apple fans are reluctant to jailbreak because it's a bit like switching to PC and opening the floodgates for third party crap, which may puncture the bubble.

Also, since jailbreaking prevents you from installing software updates it's pretty much a no-go for many. Updates aren't mere bugfixes, they often add functionality, such as the whole movie rental thing in 1.1.3. They don't want to open that can of worms because they don't want to run the risk of developing an attachment to their jailbroken iPod Touch, only to be offered some must-have software update from Apple.

In short, I think a lot of them understand very well what jailbreaking can bring, but brand loyalty and reluctance to open Pandora's box keeps them from doing so.

I bought them and can´t wait for the SDK apps ( hopefully) some time the next couple of months .

The mail and notes apps are the money worth anytime.

Saludos ( greetings) from Spain

First of all, what gives you the right to say that those 5 apps SHOULD have been there in the first place? Apple doesn't HAVE to give them to us at all... they could have kept them all on the iPhone but, they are giving us a choice and I think that is a very good thing for Apple (they usually don't give us many choices). Second, you don't have to upgrade... stay on 1.1.2 for all I care. You just won't have lyrics, Maps (with fake GPS), Yahoo in Mail.app, Easily customizable home screen, webclips and the security of knowing that an update isn't going to kill your iPod and make you restore it.

Taking a look at your sig; pot, kettle, black, etc. Secondly, I got the right to say it as soon as Apple decided to screw over early adopters by including the apps with newly stocked units and making everyone else pay for the same thing other people are getting for free. And you're right, Apple's not -giving- them to us at all. That's what the $20 is for.

Also, big whoop that I lose lyrics. I have the sleeker old look of the dock, I've got a Maps app (and I don't even have to be near wifi! I just have to look at a cross street to know where I am, and sometimes, not even that much.), and I've got GMail with Safari (lol yahoo). Webclips is also sometimes known as "Favorites", Customize.app for home screen management.. it $20 well spent elsewhere. And in the rare case I have to restore, check it out, I resync and I have all my stuff back.

Bringing this post back on topic, I didn't buy the app pack, nor do I plan to. Again, why should I have to pay for something that people are getting with new iPods for free? It's a crap move that's only trying to draw out more money from a 'loyal' market.

Mail Question

Is it me or am I missing something about the mail app? Can't you just view your mail anyway using Hotmail or Gmail. Do you really need this app? :)

No, but ...

you WANT it. As in, 'want' to use it. Because lets face it, it's so much better than a GMail or Hotmail interface, graphically I mean.

Thats all I care about, really, aesthetics.

I understand where apple is going with this, but they are kinda biting the hand that feeds them. How is this any different than the people who paid $600 for an iphone and then got a $100 gift card because the price was dropped and new people got the SAME package for much less money.

Personally, I want all the functionality jailbreaking it provides, unfortunately for me, my dumb ass upgraded thinking I was doing a great thing and would be able to buy what jailbroken has done for so many others. But just like apple, they only give you just enough to keep coming back for more. I purchased a new macbook and upgraded to leopard because the features suite my needs and that has a bunch of problems that I can't fix, nor have they released updates to fix.

This should be a freebie since they are including it for free now with no extra cost. But like anything else in life, until enough people get organized and complain, they don't care and won't care.

R-Fly,
Thank You!! I didn't download the new Apps that is why I wanted to know about the mail.

Take Care

Something like standing in line at midnight for a Harry Potter book or waiting hours in line for a Wiii but not standing line to protest the price of gasoline. I understand perfectly.

ricardo1064 you need to update your itunes/itouch to the latest version(s). I had the same problem till then.

As anyone had an issue with there current location feature?
I live in Boston Ma but every time with a occasion of like 3 times it tells me my current location is S Urish Road which is in like Topeka Kansas? Its annoying. but other then that I think the applications are worth the 20 bucks.

Who was it in here talking about communism? I think you two should hook up.

Seriously, jeez.

Sure, I cant download any of those other programs that are far better and free or anything, but JESUS CHRIST I GOT MAIL AND ITS FLAWLESS! HA! JAILBREAK WHO NEEDS YA!

if your whininging and crying that its over priced then why did you buy it in the first place.... lol

I bought them and I'll gladly buy more when they release them and I genuinely hope they integrate all future App releases and third party products into iTunes because ;

1) I'll know it's a safe 'certified' and trustworthy release with no malicious code
2) I don't have to hunt round the internet for them
3) They should have a controlled (reasonable) price
4) Installs super easy
5) One account to pay for them rather than endless unknown shopping carts
6) They will carry reviews

Of course this will lead me to expect that ;

1) The apps will have the seal of a quality application and at least tested by Apple at a basic level before appearing on iTunes.
2) They will be 'integrated' and 'auto re-loaded' if I need to do a restore
3) Trusted third party developers selling 'iTunes certified Apps' should be able to leverage iTunes mac synch features already
4) Bad bloated junk apps won't start appearing anytime soon.

Wow what a can of worms apple have opened up !

Are they worried > probably not as its got consumers talking about their product !

and in the end thats what the upgrade is........ a product !

Purchase it or dont !

Jailbreak or dont.

Thats the beauty of choice.

Apple are a business who are in the game to sell wether its hardware or software....... = profit etc..

I agree with people on both sides of the fence on this one really !

My machine is not jailbroken as I chose not to.
I bought the app's as I chose to........ see where im going with this.

I think its stupid that I pay $400 dollars for a top of the line music player and then less than a month later, I have to pay to upgrade it.
