It doesn't have the same specs as the 12 as it has a smaller battery. The 12 is a better value because of it's bigger battery.

Explain why it's having a hard time selling, if it's not overprice? It's the worst seller out of the 12 series.

Of course its got a smaller battery, its a smaller phone. Congratulations, you pointed out the only spec, other than screen size, that is different. So based on a smaller screen and battery, coupled with the hundred dollar cheaper price, how is the Mini priced too high and the 12 isn't? It's the same phone in a slightly smaller size with a smaller battery. That's it. Absolutely no other differences. So if the Mini is "priced too high", so is the 12.

Actually in one important respect the 12 mini has better specs than both the 12 and the 12 Pro! And that is the Screen. Not many people are aware of this, that 12 mini and 12 Pro Max use On-Cell OLED panels, whereas the 12 and 12 Pro use In-Cell OLED display panels. On-Cell panels have better perceived sharpness and cleaner colours. Moreover the 12 mini has the highest resolution display of all the 12 series phones at 476 ppi, a small but noticeable improvement.

The “Mini” moniker may really gets some people to think it is supposed to be affordable.
We got the SE for that.

Despite the provoking title, here’s a good video theorizing why the Mini doesn’t sell out well (yet).

And like I said on the other thread, I don’t care if the Mini “failed”, I like it, afford to buy it, willing to pay for it and gonna use it for years to come. As long as Apple keeps the excellent supports for it.

I´am really tempted on getting the 256gb 11 Pro (5.8 inch) for the same price of the 128 gb Mini (on my country).

I had the 12 and 12 Mini for 2 weeks, but got back to the SE 2020. I always wanted a lighter iPhone, I have to admit the Mini is really great and the bigger brother 12 (6.1) was surprisingly lighter than the 11 pro (on paper and on hands).

But there is something about the 5.8 size that feels great... even being thicker and heavier than the 12

• The survey done by CIRP was a sample of 243 US customers. That is far from a true representation of the world-wide sales.
• iPhone 12 Mini was released a month after iPhone 12/Pro. Carriers like AT&T had $800 credit deal towards iPhone 12/Pro. Many people took advantage of that. The deal was good enough that many people did not want to wait for that next shiny thing.
• In my opinion, there are two kinds of iPhone 12 Mini buyers. One, who, regardless of price, wants the smallest/latest, and the other, who wants the cheapest iPhone. There could be many in the latter segment that decided to shell out another $100 and get the bigger phone.

My suggestion: Don't buy Mini because it is the cheapest. Buy it because you want the smallest and the latest.

I agree - initial sales of brand new iPhones tend to be made by the people most interested in/invested in the higher spec models. A large proportion of people will wait until their current contract ends, which won't coincide with the new launch date, and I would guess that within this population the iPhone mini may be a more popular choice due to the lower cost. So - on that basis we shouldn't be surprised that the larger, higher spec, more expensive models are selling faster on launch, given who's likely to be buying new phones at launch.

Therefore growth in iPhone Mini sales should see a slower curve, as more people come to end of existing contracts.

Plus, what we don't yet know is what proportion of the iPhone Mini sales are coming from people changing from another iPhone, or coming from a different brand. I.e what proportion of iPhone Mini sales are 'new' and what proportion are sales which otherwise would have gone to other models. In my case I wouldn't have upgraded again this year if it wasn't for the Mini.

Overall I'm not too worried about the long term viability of the Mini until we see more data on sales after the initial 'surge'

It’s also worth mentioning that there are 6 iPhones currently offered with the new look design and an additional 2020 SE in the line up. They all have their own market demands and even the higher end models are nowhere near the popularity of when Apple were only releasing one or two models a year.

With the Mini I feel there was less attention on its cost and more on its size as its priced so closely to the standard iPhone 12. I felt the 12 got a lot of attention on launch day and more so than the Pro models.

Apple lavished a lot of attention on the 12 mini at the launch event which indicates the importance of this model in their lineup. One of the reasons for the small cost difference between the 12 mini and the 12 is because they have used a more expensive, better quality display in the 12 mini (On-Cell OLED panel vs In-Cell OLED panel).As well, they have used a higher resolution display in the 12 mini than the other 12 series phones. All this adds to the cost. The 12 mini is very much a premium phone.

Kinda understand that. I had this feeling after a week with mini, when my XS wasn’t sold. But after a month with mini I was so into it. It’s so light and with the most beautiful design that Apple used for phones. Sometimes I miss my habit for typing two hands but eventually people will used to it. Using phone with one is something I missed with XS for so long.

But the one hand swiping experience is great. I can swipe back from the left screen edge with my right thumb so much better.

Sadly in our country swiping is not avalaible. So typing with one hand has never been better for me (and smaller form factor helps me for better typing on my work iPhone SE 1. gen). I am typing with my both hands sometimes but I feel that one is better.

There’s none for my native language as well, but I write in English more with my GF so it’s fun to use.

Agreed - unless you've got really small hands or slender fingers two handed typing is less easy on the Mini, so it requires some adjustment, but until the iPhone 6 was introduced, this is how everyone typed! One handed swiping is the future. I installed some third party swipe software years ago and was really glad when Apple integrated it into the main keyboard.

Luckily I have slender fingers, but still, miss typed here and there occasionally.

Swiping keyboard has always been my favorite back in my Android days and I installed Swiftkey too on my iPhone 6 for a few weeks until I notice native keyboard is still lighter and snappier. Apple’s own swipe keyboard is truly welcomed.

There a very few quite ok small phones but nothing comes even close to the Mini if you are on Android and want something small. Many Android users are used to thin bezels for a long time so the SE could be a No-Go as a switch option to Apple. But the Mini could be. This is also important. No Mini alternative in the Android world. There are some 5.8 inch etc. but nothing this small with such a big display in comparison. Most are 6.1 and up. This is worth quite something for Apple if people switch because of the small size.

I really hope for a 13 Mini as some things are a little worth than on big phones. Battery is no concern. But I feel reception could be better. and some say it is on the bigger phones. Plus better reception Qualcomm chip with iPhone 13 saving more battery. Plus there is some work with the resolution, esp. display zoom, to be done. I really think it has to do with you tech situation. I always have my iPad Pro on my desk and either a computer at work and at home but still spend most of my time on the ipad. My mini is just to get from here to there. If I didnt have the ipad I would want a bigger phone. The battery life on the mini is fine with me because of that. There have been times were I could run the battery down in a day but it occurred more with my 12 max because i used it most of the day.

I think it's about trade-offs. Also coming from an XS, I think I was slightly faster typing with two hands on a larger phone, but I couldn't easily type one handed on that phone. So I now type faster when one handed with the Mini, which for me is more useful, as there are more situations where I need to be able to type well one handed, than there are situations where I need to be able to type fast two-handed (on my phone at least). And if you take the effort to properly learn to use the swipe keyboard it's faster still (my brain still occasionally freezes when trying to 'swipe' - it's like it knows how to make words using combinations of letters, but swiping them in sequence causes it to short circuit!)

Just flip your iPhones into a landscape mode, guys, and you will be able to type with both thumbs just fine. Try it, that landscape keyboard is massive! 😉

I went from the 6S to the 11 and think the 12 Mini is the perfect size, I have medium sized hands and the 11 is just on the large size.

Just upgraded from my SE 2 to a Mini. Went from having all plus models to the SE to hold me over. Loved the size and decided that I no longer want the bigger phones.
I also got the wife a 12 coming from an X. They should be here monday.

I have done that -- but sometimes it's not allowed. On Twitter and Facebook, I can't type landscape (the latter I can only if I am adding photos).

But yeah, it is useful when you can type via landscape mode.

You have to change how you hold the phone. We are so use to holding the bottom with our pinky and that isn’t necessary with the mini. I just grip it and that makes the difference.
