Does anyone remember the name from psychology for having to tear down something new that other people will have to feel better about something someone already has?

ha

This discussion has popped up in every thread, mostly by the same people. How can you determine how cheap or elegant or quality something feels until you get a chance to hold it for real? Pictures cannot give you that. Seriously, relax. If you hate it, continue to use your first generation phone.. no worries.

I love the current iPhone, but personally, a one color back rather than two tone appeals to me. I hope it doesn't feel cheap, but my feeling from the pictures is that it will have an improved aesthetic and feel in person. We'll just have to see when it arrives. Sheesh, product cycles are fast these days.

Not really sure that your psych anaolgy applies here. The 3G is so cheap a middle-schooler could buy one by saving his lunch money. I got my 1st gen 3 months ago and was ready to drop $400+ on the new one if it blew me away and it just...didn't. And one of the biggest detractors for me is the solid plastic back. I'll upgrade eventually, but I'm not nearly as compelled to as I am with most Apple upgrades. I don't think anyones trying to trash the new phone to alleviate buyers remorse or to make themselves feel good. Some just feel that the 3G is a step-backwards in terms of its form factor.

Fixed it for ya. :D But I agree, Apple/AT&T definitely are doing this to pull those "on the fence" people in who might have wanted a smartphone for themselves or kids (I'm sorry, what kid needs a smartphone), but didn't want to drop $400+ on one.

I prefer the brushed aluminum, but the black/white plastic isn't an issue for me. What is an issue for me that as of right now, other than 3G and GPS (which I could care less about) are not worth the "upgrade", not to mention a more expensive data plan.

IMHO the iPhone is some amazing tech that was/is being implemented in an "awkward and not to it's full potential" way.

IT LOOKS BETTER because it's made better! The old one that is. The plastic on the new one is more about cost reduction than anything else. They even had to cheapen the accessories! No more dock. The people that are saying its a significant improvement probably sold their originals and are upset or are first time iphone buyers. You couldn't possible not see that the old one was made with better materials. To those that say speed was most important well thats old news and you could of bought one of the many smartphones with no design and plenty of speed. The original iPhone was high quality and great design. This new model is mass market appeal al la RAZER!

To me you sound biased, using the same generalization you used, I'd say you couldn't sell your first one.

Anyway I prefer the back of the old one by far. I thought for once apple got it right, and unlike the iPods, the iPhone wouldn't look like **** after putting it down on your table or in your pockets. The dock, bah who really cares it's a gimmick more than anything.

The GPS though is still a big addition.

I do like the backing on the old iPhone better from what I've heard so far. But, I really won't be to compare the 2 until I have the new one in my hand.
