A waste of time? Maybe. It's a consumerism catalyst but it does incite good times with family, friends, and lots of gifts and what not.

This has to be your nastiest thread yet. If you are having a bad day or are lonely, that's one thing, but do not spread your misery. That is just wrong.

Anything that brings you closer to your family and friends is not a waste of time.

I admit the commercial/consumer aspects are bad, but regardless of the religious emphasis (or not) an event that results in family and friends coming together and a catalyst for self reflection has to be good.

lol, not lonely or having a bad day, my whole family is down, there's nothing for us to do with everything being closed.

What do you want to do that is closed?

Most movie theaters are probably open
And there are tons of things to do that don't require a place to be open

Down from where? :D

[visions of Waloshin keeping his family in attic and only letting them out for holidays]

Merry Christmas, bro.

Who else thinks Christmas is a waste of time?

I don't think its a waste of time, as we celebrate the birth of Christ. While we exchange presents and my girls get their toys. The focus/emphasis is definitely Christ centered.

I feel bad for you waloshin, in that you think its a waste of time. For the non-religious/non-Christian it can be a time for Family and enjoying the season and giving.

For the Christian, its definitely a great day.

Try the Egg Nog and some quality discussion with family ... maybe they are not as down as you ... tell your Mom to post, we want to hear from her.

The non-Christians already have another day for all that stuff, my family is Jewish and we did it 3 weeks ago, so Christmas really is just another day to me - except everything is closed and there's nothing good on TV.

Well said, sounds very much like our Christmas.

but it is still a great holiday.

Indeed! I would still love Christmas even if it did not include stuff like presents and so on. I haven't been a member of church for years so the religious part isn't an interest of mine, and it has never been (my family isn't religious either).

For once, most people can have at least few days off and it's great time to spend some time with family and mates. At least in here, it's very crucial to have some time to rest as harsh winter and constant darkness sucks energy out of us.

Christmas is what you make it

Some make it about celebrating the birth of Christ
Others make it a time for family reunions and sharing
Still others make it a time of presents and giving
Some use it as an opportunity for helping those less fortunate

Apparently waloshin has made the choice to make it a waste of time
While that is his choice, it has no influence on mine
