Simple question but an important topic to me. 2 hours after iCloud went live, for those of us who aren't developers or had mobile me prior, I tried to get a combination of my first and last name @me.com While my first 5 attempts consisting of initials etc. didn't pan out i finally got [lastname][firstname]@me.com

I got mine. Have been using [first][last]@gmail.com for quite some time, and conveniently was able to get [first][last]@me.com straight away.

Not exactly understanding why we need an @me account if someone wouldn't mind explaining.

Nice. I tried all of that and it wanted to ad 5 or 7 after it so i assumed there were that many that beat me to it. How long after it went live did everyone try?

You don't need a @me.com address to use iCloud. You can use your iTunes ID for that. But you need a @me.com address to get iCloud email access. I make one to move from Gmail to iCloud.

I have a PC. Do I just go to icloud.com once the update is complete?

    Sadly nope, I got [firstname].[lastname](number)@me.com

But I'm perfectly happy with this. It still is professional. Plus if I had gotten the first and last email address, I'm sure I would have gotten a lot of spam email like my gmail account.

Nope, you get to choose what you want for your email address.

No. You either make one on your upgraded iOS 5 device or install the iCloud control panel for Windows. For Mac you just update to 10.7.2, I believe.

I got [first initial].[last name]@me.com, which is what I wanted. Then I registered [first name][last name] as an alias. :D

I'm pretty happy, I got the two I wanted which are obviously long since taken on Gmail. I've been using [first name][middle initial][last name] with Gmail, but sometimes people spell my first name wrong (there are variable spellings) or forget to put in the middle initial so I never get the email.
