i want to know how smoothly talking to an apple rep went to get a replacement mbp because currently my first mbp is having the sleep problem as well as random screen flickering. Are the apple reps over the phone generally knowledgeable about the situation and willing to offer a replacement for a defective product?

My main concern is buying the MK1 model of a new Mac. This thread confirms my fears. Surely Apple must read forums like this?

If this is one of the new ones, just call and explain your problem, no smooth talking required. Based on the situation you described, they will definitely give you the choice to send it in for repair, or to have it replaced outright with a new machine. Very easy process and they are not hesitant at all to take them back.

Yes, you have a 1 year warranty on hardware with every new computer you purchase.

But you can't get a refund. They'll just repair it for you for free.

I am returning mine because of a battery issue and the fact that it won't wake up from sleep 50% of the time.

Also, my 7200 RPM hard drive makes the whole case vibrate. Do you think this is unique to my hard drive or is it all 7200 RPMs? Should I maybe think about replacing it with a 5400?

I have the same issue - see posts in this thread. If you remove the battery cover you can actually move the drive around with your finger. It's clearly not firmly held in there.

For me, that plus a yellowish screen were enough to request a replacement.

Are you getting a replacement? Are you still getting the 7200 rpm drive?

Yes, and yes. :) If it's still a problem I may take it into a retail store for repair. All it needs is a 'pad' of some sort to absorb the vibration. I fear it's a design flaw, but then everyone would be complaining about it... maybe some of us just got poorly constructed machines.

Let's hope it's that easy. So, previous generation MBPros with 7200 RPM drives didn't vibrate this much I'm assuming?

I've had both a 15" and a 17" and neither made noise like this! Of course the case is a completely different design, and this might be a casualty of the user-replaceable hard drive... let's hope not!

Incidentally I had a new 15" 2.53ghz model before this (long story) and it didn't make the noise, though it did have the stock 5400rpm drive.

just curious, exactly how long does it take for apple to send you the return box and then ship you the replacement macbook pro? or do they do it at the same time?

You can request that they ship you the replacement first, after which you return the faulty one. They make you sign a waiver and give credit card details in case you don't return one of them.

In my experience so far, the replacement is taking as long (possibly longer) than my original order took.

so apple will only charge you if they dont receive the defective mbp in a specified amount of time, or do they charge you in the beginning then reimburse you later? i ask because i dont want to pull too much from my credit even if it is only temporarily.

They only charge you if you don't return it within 5 days of receiving the replacement. It's all specified in the waiver you agree to.

ok thanks, i think i will do that since i cant be away from a computer for long

I have the last fan noise problem on mine, but it sometimes goes away. I notice also sometimes when I hold the notebook up in the air with my two hangs and change the angle it makes the fan whirling type noise go away.

I bought a 2.4 MB for the fiance and its perfect. My first 2.53 MBP on the other hand had a dead pixel right in the middle so they swapped it out for another. This second one is perfect except for the light fan sound which appeared after a day of light use. I am definitely not chancing getting another. The quality control is definitely varied and it's disappointing to have to "settle" for a lesser defect being acceptable.

How long did it take anybody who got a replacement to get that email with the shipping label to ship back?

I called them 2 days ago for display flickering they said it was DOA, and I have yet to receive the email.

I have returned mine recently, waiting for the delivery of the new one.
I had 2 issues:

- My trackpad: Sometimes it will not register clicks.
- The screen: when scrolling up/down in safari some horizontals lines appeared and it looked like a distortion within these lines.
Now I'm back to the old powerbook 1Ghz. Annoying.

Argh! Mine is the same :( Funny thing is it doesn't happen in Opera - only safari and firefox.

Did you get a replacement? Any better?

Is this a known problem? Should I get it replaced? Or will it get fixed via firmware update? (It is one day old boo hoo)

I debating whether to return mine, externally it's a flawless, quiet machine but has two problems that are killing me, these two issues are widely reported here and on the Apple forums.

1. Vista 64 freezes twice a day.
2. Vista and OS X restart when waking from sleep.

Should I return it?

2.8ghz SSD MBP

I haven't had to return it yet, but my right side speaker is blown, it crackles whenever it hits certain tones or volumes... I wouldn't want to be deprived of my macbook for any amount of time to resolve that issue, so I don't think I'm taking it down to the store unless I have more of a reason to. I'm settling for Headphones or mid range speaker volumes for now.

No other problems at all that I have been able to find after a week of intensive use.
