lol at people getting mad at somebody returning something they have the right to return. Apple has always touted its return policy and its one of the components brings consumers back time and time again. Many employees I've interacted with actually promote it. I know when I buy something from them, I'll either love it or end up returning it. They are maximizing profits margins left and right, so don't worry...they can afford it. It's one of the things that makes Apple feel like a true "luxury" brand. Definitely makes me want to buy things from them compared to their competitors (not to mention the great CS you get in store, but that's another topic).

In regards to the actual topic, I swapped my SG for silver mainly due to the fact that the polished steel band will be easy to keep looking like new with polishing wipes. I use them on my SS watch and it looks like new. I was hoping the PVD coating on the SG would be as strong as the one they use on the watch but that doesn't appear to be the case, and once that scratches there is nothing that can be done. I plan on selling the phone before the next model comes out so I want to keep it in great condition.

However as many have said they both look great. Pretty much 50/50 after owning both. The silver is definitely more unique though and I think it might work a little better with what the phone represents. You can also throw the silver in a case and you kind of get the best of both worlds (using a black apple leather case). You just get that little glimpse of polished SS at the bottom.

Oh dear lord. Returns for this kind of stuff ranks as low as pointless goes, & as a business, would irk Apple so much.

Try & refrain from it, as in the end, the sublime customer service Apple provides will take a hit.

I mean, tolerance of consumer dissatisfaction can only go so far, & as it normally is with human nature, we'll try & push it as far as we can go......before something has to give.......

They've already made changes for the worse in terms of exchanges and returns in recent years. Likely due to high returns. I am guilty of retuning a number of Apple products for defects, but then why should I live with poor quality when paying thousands of pounds.

In terms of the changes they no longer allow you to keep a product until the replacement arrives. You must return the original item first and it has to be scanned as returned by their warehouse before the replacement is shipped. It was much better the old way because you could then compare the replacement to the original item with both in hand and if the replacement has more defects you just keep the first.

Apple products are all about the level of defects you can tolerate. I can find an issue with every single Apple product I come across. But then I am super OCD when it comes to tech.

Also you can only get a replacement item twice before you must accept a refund. On top of that you can no longer order the same product again unless you use a different account or go in store.

Nonsense. If Apple wanted to reduce returns for this reason, then they should have placed the iPhone X on display in stores BEFORE commencing Pre-orders. Based on those misleading pictures on the Apple website which lead me to believe that the band was exactly the same on both models, I pre-ordered the silver. After seeing the SG in person at a Verizon store a day before launch, I became torn. Still not having seen the silver in person, I got in line at the Apple store at 3am on launch day and even though they had put up display models, they sill would not let me me get up close with the models until after 8am. Explaining my dilemma to the sales associate, he said if I stepped away to view the models at 8, I would lose my precious place in line. Thinking the hell with it, I purchased the SG (in addition to the silver that got delivered to me later that day) and then after finally spending a good 10 mins with both display models, I decided I liked the silver after all. So now I have a silver model activated, and a SG model still sealed off and in the box unopened that I will return shortly. Apple could have avoided this particular return if the had just let me see the freakin phone in person before Pre-orders. And no, I was not going to wait until after I saw the display models before ordering, if I did that, then I would have to wait til Dec to get my phone. Nothing dishonest or unethical about what I did, and I was even upfront with the sales associate that I was about to have two models with the intent to return one.

I will be going to the Apple store to switch my space gray for silver. I always wanted the silver but couldn’t get my hands on a 256 Silver launch day. My local store now has the silver in the 256. Anyone made the switch? I am switching because always liked the lighter color and the shiny band! The space gray is nice, but just came from 7 plus jet black. A little tired from the dark color.

I have the silver, but I think the space gray looks better from what I saw at the store. I will just wait and get a space gray next year. I'm happy with my phone, and I'd hate to switch it out and get a defective one 😀

Based on those misleading pictures on the Apple website which lead me to believe that the band was exactly the same on both models,.

The hands-on videos post-keynote, & various online sources, showed the bands to be different.

My point is, Apple's supreme (almost too good to be true) customer service is very rare, & won't be around for ever if people return items for the more fickle reasons like this.........these aren't a pair of jeans.........do your research, pick a colour & be done with it, because, much like other examples of companies giving people an inch before seeing them take a mile, the rest of us will suffer....

Totally disagree - the photos on Apple.com made the band on the SG look like the same as Silver when they are not. And you can't judge how something looks based on photos and/or videos.

As for using the returns policy - it exists because Apple allows it - so if you feel bad using it then thats up to you but I don't. I always return and exchange items. I changed my Macbook Pro touch bar FOUR times until I was happy with the spec I had. I've returned items after weeks or months (if allowed) and I don't have any concern for a big company - in this case the BIGGEST company in the world.

So use it while you still can - if they stop doing it then thats what happens but I am not changing how I do things.

I am also considering changing to silver and I will reserve one when there is stock.

No restocking fee at Apple.

Not sure how anyone is swapping iPhones for different color, storage or whatever at this point with very limited availability of the X. My local AT&T corporate store never got any of the Xs at all.

Apple has always had a short but great return policy, and nobody should feel guilty for using it for any reason. At the price of these phones, anyone should feel 100% happy with their purchase and not feel "stuck" with something. If Apple put display models out the day after announcements for customers to see and handle before preordering then more people would know for sure what they want. Overall, I would say the % of actual returns is probably really small...off course among us here at MacRumors that % is very high but most people are as fanatic about Apple as we are anyway.

They are both amazing looking phones, and as much as you can't go wrong with either, I still am on the fence which one I will end up with. Leaning towards silver, as the screen and SS band has the same look as my SS apple watch.

I didn’t look closely but is the frame different colors or just the backs

The frames are different. The silver is SS like the Apple Watch and the Black is SS with a coating like the Space Gray Apple Watch.

I didn’t realize it was a different band from the keynote and reviews I saw until after I saw the phones in person. I thought the bands where same prior to ordering. I like the Black with Silver SS like my Apple Watch which is why I am leaning towards silver. Although the Space Gray is very stealth looking.

Thanks
I put the product red leather on the SG X.
Honestly, I love the combo.
Glad I went with SG and not silver.

Apple hasn't published anything yet. I expect one of the exec team will be gushing about what they've used for the PVD coating on the X soon, then we'll have our answer on exactly what it is (and how durable it is).
There's a video where a mohs 5 pick scratches the coating on the SG iPhone X.
There's also one of the members here that scratched his with a key.
But, we also have to remember that Apple's stainless steel is fairly soft. A sharp edge with sufficient force may also scratch the Apple Watch.
(went looking for a scratch test of the actual DLC Apple Watch body - with a mohs pick - an actual scientific test - haven't been able to find one).
