Coming from Android, Apple's implementation is better. The AOD brightness is a function of the display brightness when the device is awake though it could still stand to be tweaked. It's not bad for a first generation implementation. I like it better than lift to wake. I just leave it facedown or in my pocket to turn it off.

Totally agree with the need for user customization options but aren't there just two options, on and off? After all, it is "Always ON Display". Perhaps just dim the screen a few percent more?

You can adjust font color and intensity - and so a sort of faux brightness control, particularly with white/gray font. Similarly with lock screen you could choose darker colors or images and thus have the whole thing largely fade out while still retaining a different image for your background behind you icons. You also have a handful of widgets to choose from for info display when locked and AOD - I have current weather plus calendar showing next meeting.

So more than on/off, but also pretty limited.

True. Good point. I just don't see what the ruckus is all about. One either likes the feature or disables it. In the middle of the night, I really only care about the time. Samsung's implementation is a bit spartan.

Doesn't really bother me... I usually just put my phone face down when on a desk anyway and that turns it off... I do love it for live update though... When I'm around the house and I'm following a game on live update having the AOD is clutch... I can just glance over at my screen and see a live update and current status of the game. Before I was constantly unlocking my phone and opening the ESPN app to check.

Isn't live update coming in iOS 16.1?

You can't run DND and Sleep at the same time, and I cannot set schedules for sleep like I can for DND.

I have the Belkin MagSafe dock, so my phone is face up.

Gotcha, but you can create a shortcut that runs sleep in whatever schedule you want on and off. :)

It’s one of the reasons I’m tempted to keep my 14 Pro. My car has one of those older Bluetooth radios in it, so I keep my iPhone mounted to a MagSafe vent mount. The AOD keeps the screen very dim while driving at night, and I can easily see the time and where I am in my podcast or song.
Sounds essential lol.

If I'd kept the 14 Pro I would have switched it off. Didn't need it before, don't need it now and I feel it's a waste of battery.
Don't like it? turn it off...massive overeaction now over.

And additionally from people who don't even have it.

It’s not something I’m crazy about, but it has its uses. When I’m on my lunch break, my phone is sitting on the table so I can quickly glance at the time.

A bigger question is, why would I turn it off. I have the max size iPhone so the battery lasts more than my day. Besides that for my use, and I suspect for most peoples use the extra battery it uses is very minimal.

I think a lot of people don’t understand this always on display isn’t on when the phone is in your pocket. For me, that’s most of the day. If the phone is in my hand, that means the display is actually on so the always on part isn’t a factor. The only time my phone sits on a table for an extended period of time would be at night when it’s plugged in so it again battery life isn’t a factor.

What’s kind of weird is even though android had it first I don’t know anyone with an android phone that has it turned on. Maybe because of it’s very limited usefulness, but as I said, I don’t see a reason to turn it off. Maybe it’s off by default on android so they don’t see a reason to turn it on?

i wouldn't be surprised if apple has an update to make it how you want it. they seem to listen more these days than people think

The only ones who hate the always on features are cheaters who might get caught from all the notifications and messages from side pieces left and right🤷 sorry not sorry.

I’m just kidding. I went through a horrible divorce but before then my ex wife learned to silence “notifications” from her sancho, but iMessage or find my have been tools that can help or destroy relationships because of “syncing” issues from one Apple ID.

I decided that I hate the always on feature. It seems so pointless to me to see a faint clock and a faint wallpaper image. I dont understand why this was such a big deal to have in the iPhone.

Regardless, this is my opinion - What do you think of the Always On Feature?
I don’t have the 14 pro but if I adjust to iPhone 14 pro size and weight I would definitely buy it just for the AOD alone. Currently on iPhone 12 mini , AOD plus all the new features are tempting. One gripe about AOD that it shuts itself off.

I’m not sure whether to laugh, or sad react to this post… I feel your pain!

I’m sure people will disable it for that purpose. Having one Apple ID is definitely a way to get caught because texts will sync over. The best way not to get caught is don’t do it 😂

Only if you block the camera, put the phone facedown, in your pocket, or exceed the range of the Apple Watch?
