These big open worlds, which are fully interactive, do come at a severe cost on PS3. There is considerable texture pop-in and noticeable framerate issues. Playing back-to-back with the 360 version, it's obvious that Ubisoft did not devote enough resources to the PS3 edition. The framerate is considerably worse, so much so that it begins to affect gameplay in the later levels. You can get through the first two-thirds of Assassin with the framerate being just an annoyance, but it becomes more of an issue for the final third of the missions.
As it stands now, Assassin's Creed is one of those titles that was big on promise, but short in some ways on its overall execution.
Maybe I'm just biased and anti-sandbox/open roam games after GTA3 being churned out three times over for so long, but...meh.
Seems like IGN is the only one that's relatively poo-pooing this game. Gamespot gave it an editor's choice award.
I, for one, am picking up my copy tomorrow.
Cheers.
And from the PS3 version of the review...
Well there you go. It looks like there was a reason why Ubisoft have been demoing the game mainly on 360. And that 'supposed to be identical' statement is literally just that.... a supposition.
Oh well if I do get it now.. something I'm not sure about now, then I'll go for the 360 version.
link: http://www.gamespot.com/ps3/action/assassinscreed/review.html?sid=6182793&tag=topslot;title;1&page=2There are few differences between the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions. PS3 owners are blessed with a slightly more solid frame rate, although the 360 version features a little more contrast in the lighting, so it's pretty much a wash. But regardless of which platform you go with, you'll have an amazing and unforgettable game.

So how can GameSpot say the PS3 has the better frame rate, and IGN disagree. Is IGN not reviewing retail copies?
The engine (on the 360, anyway) handles large crowds of up to a hundred without much of a drop in framerate, all while rendering the world with self-shadows, light blooming, simulations of sunlight passing behind clouds, high resolution textures and a massive draw distance.
9.0 Graphics
We didn't get the pop-in the US referred to, but we did get some screen tearing. Otherwise, the game is utterly gorgeous and convincingly animated.
8.5 Presentation
The menus are a little tricky to navigate and the map system isn't super-precise, but the game nails the look and feel of the era.

8.0 Sound
Voice-acting is mostly very solid, but we're not sold on the lead. The music is almost non-existant, replaced by ambient sounds that really bring out the bustle of the streets and whistle of wind.
8.5 Gameplay
Okay, this is the tricky part. There is a clear formula to the gameplay, but this is a game that makes the most of a few really great ideas. We love it, but you might not.
7.5 Lasting Appeal
At 15 hours with most side-quests tackled, the game isn't huge. However, there are plenty of vistas to explore and some tricky flags to hunt down.
8.7 Great OVERALL
Like, the part of sitting down and eavesdropping to get information on your target? I think that's a cool idea, and makes it more realistic. IGN guy made a huge drama over it.
AI....so what if the guy on top of the roof hasn't noticed that people below are chasing you?? That is NOT going to ruin the game for me, I'm sorry. IGN seems to be really nitpicking here.

Oh not true my friend...1up, gamespy, Eurogamer, teamxbox all gave this game in the 7s so the game is ranking 89%.
Don't let reviews cloud your judgement of the game because these guys talk a bunch of crap at times. If you can get past the dumb AI and repetitive nature of the game you will enjoy it.
One thing I must say about these sites that review games....they are constant...in contradicting themselves.

I wasn't feeling this game from the start....and after IGN's review, I feel like I was right....other sites saying other things is interesting...but there are too many other "AAA for sure" games out there...no need to risk 59 with this game.
