While I also own an iMac, I spend 99% of my time on my MacBook and now MacBook Pro. Have not used a desktop since the PowerBook Duo, which was a desktop and a notebook! :D

Selling both a MacBook Pro and Mac Pro to buy my i7 17" - it's powerful enough for serious Photoshop (especially with a Mercury Extreme SSD in its optical bay), gets me down to one computer (probably plus an iPad for extreme portability), and only draws 85 watts or less.

I like to be monogamous with computers. I'd hate having to sync files between two machines so I prefer to just have one. And since I like being able to pick where I use my machine, my MacBook Pro is my friend. An iMac/iPad combo would be neat, but the iPad is just too closed and limited. I prefer being able to do everything anywhere. Not just browse and stuff. Plus I have an iPod touch for when I need a tiny internet device instead.

See, I can't stand anything larger than the 13". I wanted to love the 15". I'd have gotten one with the higher resolution screen, but I couldn't get past the size of the computer. Just seemed too big for my daily use. So I stick with the 13" even with its "youngest child syndrome"*.

*Referring to it being the smallest of the family and always being the last to get the good features. Maybe one day the 13" will have dual video cards, an i5 option and a higher resolution option, but for now it's lucky it has a backlit keyboard and FireWire. Let's hope the other three features become hand-me-downs in the next few years.

I cant believe how many of you people use the 13" as your main rig.

f that

my 15" is my main, the 13" does not haven enough real estate.

I have a 13" MacBook Pro and I use it as my main computer but I did upgrade the memory to 4GB when I bought it. I also have a 22" monitor to hook up my MBP when I need a higher resolution.

I have an ancient PC that I use for a file/print server, but other than that, my MBP is my main comp

Main and only rig here.

History of previous systems...

MacBook Pro (15-inch, Late 2008)
MacBook Pro (Early 2008)
MacBook Pro (Late 2006)
iBook G4 (Mid 2005)
Mac mini (2005)

:)

The new 2010 13" is the best computer. Hands down.

I use a 15" MBP as my main machine but that's only because I'm saving for a Mac Pro, once I get that I expect the MBP won't get used half as much... :p

f you bro (no homo) ;)

The 13 inch will be fine for many mobile users needs, and onced docked unless you're doing....I dunno...Photoshop (because everyone here seems to be a pro photographer) then the 15 inch will help. Otherwise if you dock it to a large display once you get back to your desk you couldn't tell the difference.

Sometimes I really hate Apple.

IMHO, all of the current MBP models are good. Which one to choose? Hard to decide since Apple has provided some great options.

At one moment I'm thinking a 13 with 24 inch display. At another the 17. Then I think, the 15 is a great compromise. Arg.

Guess I will just use my current 15 until it dies, then decide.

2008 MacBook as main computer here :D
2.4GHz, 160GB, 2GB RAM, GMA X3100, running 10.6, Adobe Design Premium CS3

Trading up to MacBook Pro 13" 2.4GHz, 256GB SSD, 4GB RAM, nVidia 320m, to run 10.6, Adobe Design Premium CS5 plus 32GB Wifi+3G iPad.

Using a 21" 1600x1200 Wacom Cintiq as an external display, so have no desire to go bigger than a 13".

I use my MBP as my main - I have a Mini but that is my media center / time capsule host unit and control it remotely via my MBP or iPhone.

MBP is now my life.

The day Apple released the current crop of MBP's, that afternoon I ordered the stock 17" from MacMall. It's replacing a year-old 24" iMac. I also had a 13" MacBook which I used at home but it was excruciating to work in Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign at that screen resolution.

Of more importance was the constant housekeeping of files from one computer to the next. If I worked on something at home, I needed to remember to update that file on my iMac when I got into the office the next morning.

Now I'm living solely on the 17" MBP and couldn't be happier – I'm always working from my main system. I lose 7" in physical screen real estate but the actual screen resolution (1920x1200) is the same. Not to mention I use a dual monitor setup and can always use my larger external monitor as the main display.

So happy I went back to a laptop-only scenario.

Didn't vote as there isn't a middle option, my usage is about 50/50% Funny till recently I've always been a desktop person. I can see that moving towards the MBP though, just a easier, more convenient and overall enjoyable option.

Just need to find a UK store that sells the 1.2 standard MDP to HDMI adapter.

Laptop size for main computer

I think if people aren't hooking up to an external monitor often, for example they type from their couch more than they do a desk then a larger screen size on the notebook is more important, then I'd go 15 or 17".

If you're going to often be hooking up to an external monitor then the 13" would be great, and a little lighther / smaller for traveling too.

If you're working long hours on a computer a display larger than 13" becomes important to most people I think.

Definitely my main machine at this point. I use it for...
-Composing
-Film scoring
-Mixing
-Live keyboards
-Live bass
-Vocals
-Sound editing
-Experimental sound design...

17'' 2.8Ghz MBP
8GB RAM
M-Audio Profire 610
160GB Intel X-25M G2
Samsung 256GB SSD in the Optibay This Week
1TB Lacie Quadra via eSATA for project files and recording
Hitachi 500GB 7200RPM via USB 2.0 for backup and extra samples

I have an old iMac 20" and a 13" dell laptop. My primary computer will be my new 15" i7! Will probably get rid of the iMac...

My 17" MBP is my main machine; but I've also got a 27" iMac and an iPad (and a second UB MBP... and an old, 1st gen MBP). I use all of them extensively.

The iMac runs my home theatre. Its attached to a 1080p projector via a wireless HDMI device and Sonus Faber speakers via a Cambridge DacMagic Dac connected to a YBA amp. Its a REALLY nice setup, if I do say so myself. :) But I'd hate to have to connect my laptop up with the eyeTV, external drives, optical out and displayport just to watch TV! :) And the 27" imac makes for a great TV when I don't want to darken the room to run the projector. So the iMac is a must for me given the investment in the whole setup.

But the imac with its 3ghz chip cannot come close to the performance of my i5 MBP with SSD! The SSD makes all the difference in the world. Even Xbench scores my imac at 208 overall; and my MBP at 288! And it feels every bit of that. Movies, photos and everything else gets done on the MBP.

So my MBP is definitely my workhorse machine. And the iPad does a great job for all other casual use and travel.
