I've seen a lot of people lately with the 16e, 16, 16pro (and even 16+) and not so many 16PM and wondering why? I though bigger was the way to go? Who has done smaller and why?
I have read that a lot of people don't like how heavy the Pro Max is and I can totally understand that.

I have two of the 16 Pro Max iPhones. I like the larger screen makes it easier when I’m editing my photos and videos. Also, I guess it depends on the size of your hands. I have fairly large hands so the iPhone 16 Pro Max works well for me. My wife has the 16 Pro, the smaller version. It’s a nice size, but the screen is just too small for my taste. of course, if I was forced to use it for a while, I would get used to it and it wouldn’t be a problem, just like the Pro Max version is not a problem. You get used to it quickly. I don’t put my phone in my pocket like many of you guys do because it’s just not practical to keep it in my pocket too much lint buildup on it. The only pocket I put it in is my work shirt pocket, the other phone is in my sling bag backpack along with my other accessories for the iPhone. As a photographer, I require the highest quality cameras and ProRaw when taking still shots. The only idea that I don’t like is a folding phone. To me that’s just dumb. But that’s just my opinion.

I recently heard that the mini phones have the same (screen/UI) compatibility issues as the old SE had, which is sad because I would really have liked to have one. My 15 Pro is nice but too big, give me an SE 1 or 2 with full screen, please!
Which compatibility issues are these?

I got a Nexus 6P in 2015 and have stuck with larger phones since. I play mobile games, so having a bigger screen is important to me. I also have big hands and big pockets, so I don't ever mind having a bigger device. There are always minor perks to having the bigger phone too, like battery life or better camera.

Since the 6+, I have always had the +/Max sized phones except for the X. I actually wish the iPhones were bigger than 6.9. I have the 15PM and I feel it is too small for me. I can not go smaller than my 15PM. I still have my X and it feels so tiny compared to my 15PM.

I suppose my favorite size was the iPhone 3 gs, I'm using an iPhone SE (2020) and probably will continue to use it until it becomes vintage/obsolete or at&t drops the lte network whichever comes first. my wife has an iPhone 16 max, I can see the advantages as well as the disadvantages to the larger size. pick your poison

When I took my first steps into the smartphone world (it was the Galaxy S, 4.0 inch), I thought I would never enjoy such a ‘phablet’ (the older ones remember... that was what we simply call a ‘smartphone’ today) because I thought the screen was way too big. Times are (a-)changing.

I can use either. But from the 11-14Pro I used the smaller, because the Stainless Steel was super weighty for the Pro Max phones. The titanium of the 15-16 makes it much more manageable for me

Well, I'd prefer an iPhone that is somewhere between the size of the Pro Max and the iPad Mini. Unfortunately, Apple does not consult me for the size of their iDevices.

I prefer large. Typically whatever model has the largest size I will get. I work from home, or in an office where I can set my phone down. My job involves computers with connected keyboards, mice and large monitors. My own preference at home is for large TVs, desktop Macs and lots of large monitors. So my devices are not used as substitute computers, media devices, game consoles or anything else you can typically use a computer for.

I use my phone primarily when out. Which isn't a lot. Calls, texts, light email and light web browsing. Consequently, I want a large device. My life does not exist on my devices, it exists on my computers. Why reach for my device when my hands are already on a keyboard?

So, no. No small devices for me.
I find that interesting, because personally I assume people who use their phone more and for more want or feel the need to get a bigger one, while people who don’t use their phone very often might prefer a small one that does what it needs to do and then not be in their way. You seem to be the opposite.

Click the link in my signature that says 'Eight Displays' and you might get a sense of where my preferences lie. But to explain more, I think it probably comes down to immersion. I wish to be immersed in the thing I am involved in. And I like filling my space. Lots of people like minimalism. That isn't me.

The argument could also be made that VR would give me what I seek, but then I'm just not interested in having something attached to my head. I already wear glasses and that's enough.

It's hard to be immersed with small screens.

Yeah, I guess I could kind of see this especially if you’re working on work items or documents..

I'm a graphic designer. I work in either QuarkXPress every day, or InDesign (personal). Then there's the rest - Photoshop, Illustrator, Word, font manager, etc.

Of the displays shown in my link though, only two are connected (via dual-link KVM) to my work MBP (a 2023 M2). But having multiple screens for multiple documents is a thing with me. And largely, a reason for not using a phone as a primary computing device.

In the past I always wanted smaller but with iPhone Pro level features. Then a couple of eye surgeries forced me to the iPhone Pro Max size and I adapted very quickly to the larger size. However I adamantly wish Apple would stop making the phones a little bit bigger every year. I have XL hands so I can hold any size of phone, but my pants pockets have not been getting any bigger and the iP16 PM fills a front pants pocket enough to make it hard to remove.

One of the reasons I have gone back to my little SE3 is software updates.
I am still waiting on the ONEUi update to Android 15 on my Samsung, 15 has been out for a long time and 16 is just around the corner.

Samsung are really dropping the ball with this software.

I’m a rollercoaster about this topic: 8 plus, XS, 12 mini and now 14 PM thinking about that the next will be a regular pro. Constantly switching idea about screen + battery life vs portability. The same as with case and caseless, a never ending story 😂

The iPhone X was perfect size for me. The iPhone 12 I have now with 6.1 inch is in practical use the same size (even though the screen is actually bigger), so I’m gonna stick to 6.1. As to your question, I don’t like bigger phones, but every tech company in the phone segment wants to look like they know the trends, so big phones, here they come.

It just is truly split between the pro and max no big surprise. I’d say slightly more favor pro here. It’s never perfect! Any recent apple sales stating which sells more? (2025) I feel the market is shifting a little …

My SE3 (which I use for work) is great for its size and I’ve gotten used to the smaller keyboard compared to my 15P. Honestly, the 5.8” (X/XS) were the perfect size for me because I don’t have huge hands.

I remember having the 12 pro and ordering the 14 pro max. I used both side by side until the return date and I stuck with the 14 pro max. Easier on the eyes and adjusting to the size difference was not a big deal.
