I agree that the new one looks a bit sterile. The old one has much more character and a much more venerable design. I remember when I was 15 years old and every time I went into the electronics section, I would float over to the Macbook Pro admiring its beauty--especially the mechanical latch. Sadly the one I have now is a rickety, creaking mess. Go figure.

I wasn't convinced by the black keyboard, but am loving the new unibody.

The keyboard is great to type on, and I think the black keys greatly improve the backlighting - more contrast between black and the light, than grey and the light.

The new trackpad, with gestures, and set to accept taps rather than clicks is a joy to use - its just so light to the touch.

The glass screen - much more durable and easy to keep clean - traditional displays had a tendency to get marked permanently, which is greatly reduced with the glass.

And the design generally with the one piece, and no joins around the edges finishes it off beautifully.

Hey all.. You know, as I was sitting in the library at my university earlier on today, with someone using the non-unibody MBPs sitting beside me... it made me look at my own MacBook Pro, and a thought hit me: Although the non-unibody looks older, I actually prefer its design. Anyone having similar aesthetic regrets on upgrading?

I agree but Apple has to do SOMETHING to make people buy the product - they have to continually push the design forward and try new things.

Much prefer the unibody design.
The other one was getting very long in tooth, IMHO.
Love that the clumsy latch is finally gone.

Hairline rubber seal around display makes a perfect closure to the body.
Every Ti & Al-books I ever had never really closed completely.

Unibody = homerun!

There are positive elements in both designs. But I think my personal ultimate design would have been to take the old design and update it with unibody and magnetic closure.

The old one has some busy elements such as the plastic trim, but overall the design and look is so clean I can't imagine what would be better (this is why I am not a designer...)

I don't know about you guys, but I love the fact that the CD slot is at the front of the old MBPs. Things I like about the new MBPs - the trackpad (feels very smooth), magnetic latch, overall sturdiness. Otherwise, the old MBP has a better design.

Loving the new design so far. The only thing I would have liked better would have been less of a black border around the screen. Other than that, I like everything else about it and love the new keyboard too!

Oh, okay....one other little thing. I miss the little Apple logo on the key.

I've got an '06 MBP, bought after the Intel switch. I love the older design, but there's something really appealing about the unibody.

Perhaps it's because my ~3yr old model's showing its age – A few knocks and scrapes, fussy lid catch that takes some persuading to release, pitted paint-work and the world's worst laptop speakers (crackle and distortion at anything over 50% volume).

The unibody's feel so unbelievably solid. None of the creaks and squeaks of my model. I love the new keyboard - no complaints about my keyboard either, but the new ones are great. The black bezel I can take or leave, but I think it's very nice.

And, thank God, the removal of the front-loading optical drive. 90% of the time I have the machine on my lap. It feels clumsy to have to tip the thing up to insert or eject a disc. My mum's got a white MacBook and I've always preferred its port layout to that of my MBP.

Overall, both very good designs. From my point of view, the unibody is a very good successor. Glad to see there's something cool out there waiting for when I upgrade.

while i prefer the more understated look of the old macbook pro, the new one brings elements that should not have been ignored in the old one: magnetic latch and rubber foot inbetween screen and hand rests; smaller speaker vents; glass screen; unibody design with no plastic moulding; stronger rounded corners and few others that i cannot really remember off the top of my head.

i prefer the colour scheme in the old one but the new one just feels like a much more solid machine.

It's really rare, but my friends early '08 Macbook Pro feels almost as solid as the new unibodies. The plastic trim is near perfect and flush with the rest of the body, there's no creaks, and the hinge is solid with no clicking noises. Mine, on the other hand is falling apart especially after Apple tore it apart for a screen repair. Luckily they're replacing the top case for me. I think the old laptop's are better if you get one of the better made ones.

aesthetics, i prefer the old one but in terms of built quality, i prefer the unibody

no latch means sealed closed lid!
no screws and little plastic edges around the notebook! (huge favor)
smaller speaker holes
one big trackpad

I bet the guy with the old MBP looked at your unibody out of the corner of his eye and though "I sure like the look of the new MBPs."

LOL!! Actually, he's a friend of mine, and yes, he did say that. Guess the grass is always greener on the other side eh? The thing is, he just bought his Early '08 MBP (2.4GHz base model) just as the new Uni year was starting, around September. Didn't take a month to make his MBP outdated:p

Totally agree with you there. At home, I always have my mac in my lap and hated having to lift it up or do a 'quick lift' when a disc was ejected.

 Mac users are still using physical media? Jeez people... get out of your Windows-mindset and welcome to the digital, streaming future.

(I kid, I kid...)

I don't think you should even be using your mbp on your lap when there's a cd/dvd spinning inside... a slight imbalance of the machine will cause the disc to be thrown of balance and begin scraping the body of the superdrive. At least that's what i've exerienced...

Definitely Prefer the Classic Strong Design, rather than the softer new Uni look. I Would like to get rid of the plastic joining, magnetic latch. But Keep the design, right down to the amazing keyboard.

I have one of both...the Uni and the old design...I hate the black keys on the new one...they started to get shiny after just one week. the old macbook pro feels more like a laptop..the new one is too minimalistic in my opinion and is more like a center piece to a room than an actual tool. i actually bought the old macbook pro after the new unibody one , go figure hahaha.

Seriously? I have never even heard that. I don't do it all the time. It's usually when I'm burning a CD for someone.

Good to know though! Guess I won't be doing that anymore.

I, for one, do miss the old design. The old one was more clasic&elegant.
That is why I am trying to sell my unibody.
