Hey guys, maybe you know this. I got December 29th for my delivery date. I think it was 23rd- 29th when I placed an order. If I was to order now, I would get 16th-23rd. Is my date just not updating or will I really get a better date if I cancel and reorder?

Stick with the current order, they have been moving dates a lot for many people including myself. If it's in the system you stand a better chance of getting it quicker than re-ordering again and getting put to the back of the Q.

Thanks. Thats whats makes the most sense of how it should be working.

I ordered mine the evening of the announcement (had to discuss with my wife first). 512GB / 16GB, so it has to be shipped (I don't understand why the 8GB models are available in stores, but the 16GB models all have to be ordered). My promised date was 24th-27th Nov. It shipped from Shenzhen on the 16th and UPS said I'd get it Friday the 20th, but then it sat in customs in Hong Kong for 4 days until the 20th. On the 20th, it went from Hong Kong to Taiwan to Alaska to Louisville (early this morning) then to Charlotte, and is due to be delivered on Monday the 23rd. So, as much as I got my hopes up to have it for the weekend, I still get it a day earlier than the original promise date assuming that UPS doesn't have challenges (package delivery has been weird this season).

Unfortunately, I think you just had a little bad luck in shipping or more people were buying the 16GB/512GB machines than 16GB/256GB machines so that slowed down the process. I ordered my mac mini (16GB/256GB) around 10:30pm eastern time the evening of the announcement. Apple sent me a message on 14 Nov in was getting ready to ship. It left Hong Kong on 16 Nov by way of UPS following the same route you detail but instead of Charlotte mine when to Atlanta. I received the mac mini mid-day on 17 Nov.

I guess everything but the standard configurations is bulid-to-order. If you choose the default options, you'll have it in a couple days. But make any changes to the defaults and you're into December.
When did you order?

When I first looked last Monday or Tuesday, estimated delivery was 16-22 December, but then went down to 9-16 December when I ordered on Thursday 19th. I assume it's a FIFO queue, so everyone's orders would move earlier?

Looks like this Mini is very popular!

Has anyone seen any benchmarks yet for both the 8gb and 16gb Mini? I'm still wondering how much of a difference 16gb will make over 8gb. I'm currently waiting for my 16gb / 512gb model to arrive on Dec 18th, but I can get a good deal on the 8gb / 512gb model and get it straight away.

There's half a chance I'll upgrade in a year or so to a 4-thunderbolt Mini or an iMac (but then again half a chance I won't) so it'd be interesting to know how they both stack up. And also, the 8gb / 512gb model will be easier to sell on if/when I upgrade, and give me a lower loss.

picking mine up today in about an hour or two. The order is ready at my local store just need to pick up. Long time since I have had a Mac Mini. Had the first generation ages ago.

I ordered mine within the first hour of availability. My order still reads "processing". I'd be thrilled if they sent it to me before mid-December!

How do you find it? And if you have used the Magic Keyboard how does it compare. Working from home and having to switch between work and personal devices I was considering the MX Keys to save on keyboard switching.
Love it. I was using a wireless magic keyboard w/o number and a wired version w/ the numberpad along with a magic mouse since they were all released. I used to love the idea of everything matching and found them all comfortable to use. Since my work PC laptop wouldn't allow me to connect external apple BT devices, I had to use wired versions and having two keyboards and two mice on my desk was maddening.

The MX keys types great. Honestly, zero complaints. Took me maybe a day or two to get used to it

Just went from using my Late 2018 MacBook Pro 13-inch with 4-core Intel i7 and 8GB RAM docked over to using the new Mac mini with Apple M1 and 16GB RAM. My God this one is preforming so much better it's no contest. I'm baffled about how good Rosetta 2 works. Many of the apps I use are not optimised for M1 so they are running through Rosetta 2 and still it feels so much more responsive when compared to my MacBook Pro.

Only thing I find strange is how I only get the option of 3440x1440@50Hz and 3440x1440@100Hz. For some reason it refuses to give me the option of using 60Hz. My MacBook Pro 13-inch has no problem with providing me with the option of using 60Hz. Only difference is me using HDMI 2.0 on the Mac mini, I was using Displayport to HDMI on the MacBook Pro.

The only ones not being happy are my cats. They loved sleeping on the hot MacBook Pro. This Mac mini is too small to sleep on and it doesn't become hot at all. They sure want me to bring back the MacBook Pro!

EDIT:

I do miss the optical output. But that has been removed on the Intel models for some time as well.

A few people are saying that you need a wired keyboard / mouse to initially set up the Mac Mini, if you have a Magic Keyboard and Magic Trackpad / Mouse, can you not just simply connect these to the Mini with the lightning cables? Or am I missing something?

The Magic Keyboard and Mouse/Trackpad will work fine without any cable, just as they are designed to. The issue for others using non-Apple hardware is that you need to get logged in 1st before they can pair/download the software so that it will work. So 1st setup they will need to have the keyboard/mouse plugged in.

So I am seriously considering $899 Mini as the MBA had to go back.

Can anyone recommend a monitor that is cross platform, with good brightness and not too expensive (works with this Mini and Windows laptop)? My budget allows for $400 max.

I need separate Mac and PC systems here (Not buying an Intel Mac).

Thanks!

Not sure what size, resolution etc you’re after, but as a general piece of advice I’d suggest purchasing a monitor that can directly connect through Thunderbolt-3 and works seamlessly with MacOS. That way, you can control brightness etc from your computer.

it’s something that didn’t occur to me when I purchased a Dell, and whilst it isn’t the end of the world, adjusting settings through the buttons on the monitor soon gets old.

Thank you Lee.

I need something between 21" - 24" max, 4k resolution is fine. I know there's the Apple LG Ultra Wide (which is a bit more than I want to spend, but if it means macOS then I guess I fit into my budget since this will be business write off), but does that work with PCs?

The Thunderbolt 3 helps, guess I have to go with the LG ultra wide?

EDIT:

Thanks to @IowaLynn, I see there are sevearwl threads mentioning issues with the M1 Mini and external displays.

So much for the Mini. :(

With regards to the keyboard, you are correct. Just plug it in as if you are charging it. However, for the Magic Mouse, the Lightening charging port is on the bottom of the mouse. Not sure how you can use it with the cable sticking out the bottom.

I used Apple TouchPad 2 instead of mouse, lightning is on the back.

That's not the issue, it is people without an Apple Mouse that will need to plug it in on 1st setup, no need with the Magic Mouse.

Ahh, thanks. I've got a magic keyboard & trackpad, so that's good to know. I thought with the number of people saying that they had to purchase a cheap keyboard/mouse, because the wireless can't connect initially, they must be referring to the Magic stuff. I think my mind couldn't process using non-Apple accessories with an Apple computer 😆
