Definitely lining up.

I've done it every year. It's a fun time. :)

----------

And when I say 'line up', I mean camp out. Captain's chairs, power strips, sleeping bag with a cushy pad underneath. Lots of food and snacks, fun conversation with other enthusiasts.

Relative comfort, good eats, good company, exciting buzz, and getting the device I want, when I want. What's not to like? :)

I always find it rather ridiculous that people will seriously wait so many hours for the same phone you could get a few weeks later. I want the iPhone just as bad as anyone, but I have the patience to wait for it. I usually order mine online anyway. Better for it to come to me than to have me wait out there and have a chance of not getting one after wasting so much time. I guess some people feel the need, but it's not my type of thing. A phone is just a phone at the end of the day. I'm not that desperate for the newest device. I'll get it when I get it and I'll be just as happy.

Because, for some of us, it's fun. We enjoy the event of it.

And I have the patience to camp out over night for it. We both have patience, just manifested in different ways.

Again, when you're enjoying the nature of the event, it's not a waste of time. It's a fun experience.

Yes, a phone is just a phone. These devices have a phone in them, but are as much 'just a phone' as a BMW is 'just a chair'.

And yes, for people that aren't excited about getting the latest device, camping out/waiting in line is completely superfluous. It's perfectly ok for some people to not feel the need, and for others to enjoy the experience. Both have legitimate ways of spending their time, and for both parties, neither approach is a 'waste'.

Why not just wait until the store has EXACTLY what you want? :-/
I could understand queueing all night for a free iPhone, but paying FULL retail and not even getting the colour you wanted? Crikey, that sounds dumb to me.

Seriously? It's the COLOR of my cellphone. Why would I wait 2-4 weeks for a freaking COLOR when I can get 2-4 weeks of use out of it instead?

And, to be fair, I didn't pay full retail. Because they gave me a ticket for the white one, but ran out before I got to the counter (bad counting on part of the staff) I got $50 off. On launch morning. Even if they had white ones, I'd have rather had black and save the $50.

----------

I usually preorder, but can't this year. I m buying outright with verizon, guess I'll be lining up early

Why can't you preorder? I'm pretty sure you can buy straight from Apple off-contract.

For some its also financially rewarding.

That's exactly how I saw it. I wanted the gold 5s but unfortunately they didn't get enough (I was only about the 20th in line). Instead I got the space grey and I have been extremely happy with it. I haven't used it any less than I would have if it were gold. It took about 2 months for my local apple store to get the gold for my carrier (Sprint...ugh). I would much rather have had the use of the phone for that two months than have a different color. It's just not that important.

But really, everytime you see someone with a gold 5s, do you die a little on the inside? ;)

Ditto, except I was able to fine a gold one a few weeks after launch day and return my space grey.

It was definitely worth "wasting my time in line" to get the space grey one on launch day :D

Maybe just a little ;)

No really, it doesn't bother me. My sister in law went out about a month ago and got a gold one and i didn't die at all. Maybe that was because I was already awaiting the iPhone 6 by then. Told her she should wait but she didn't listen. Now she's saying she wishes she could get the 6.

Right there with you. I did things a little sloppily last year (first time camping out). This year I'm going to do it up right and have all the things I need. It'll be great.

Thinking I'll need to be there pretty much right when I get done with work though. Last year I got to the mall at about 7pm the night before and was 5th in line.

This year is gonna be huge.

I lined up last year and had fun. Just remember to take a friend with you. I went by myself and met a lot of great people but I had no one to hold my spot while I went to the bathroom or get something to eat or drink. I took some water and granola bars with me so that helped but by the time a friend met me (6am) I was running for the nearest bathroom. Learned my lesson. This year if there are no preorders I will see if any of my friends want to come with me if I throw a little money their way.

I need two phones this year anyway (one sprint :( and one AT&T) so maybe that will also help me with buying them.

I am worried that we will go from no large screen iPhone, to an oversized huge phone with the worst form factor of any other smartphone, plus the many that will grumble over no 4" iPhone 6. Its lose, lose.

FYI, Apple has a design policy, whereby the top bezel must be the same size as the bottom bezel. Thats fine, except the bezel top and bottom will be large, plus the phones having a 4.7 and 5.5 screen will make them by far the largest 4.7 and 5.5 phones around. That is why I MUST see one and play with one first. I upgrade every year, I have been ranting for a larger screen for what seems years, but I can easily see myself flagging the 6.

May well rather keep my 5S, upgrade to iOS8, and get a retina iPad Mini wifi as my "phablet", given that it will be able to handle calls, SMS as awell as iMessage

Waiting in line is like Festivus to me. I need to get 2 this year. If pre-order opens, I still may pre-order 1 and wait in line for the 2nd.

Wait, are u guys usually lining up at the Apple stores or your carriers?

Wouldn't it be the same?? I'm sure the only difference is that carrier stores get less stock....

There's probably pros and cons to either store but at the end of the day, it's the same phone.

Apple Store - the one near me happens to be in a mall. Last year they had us waiting outside in a parking garage....which was good since it rained hard most of the night.

Guarantee the top and bottom bezels will be smaller this go around....

If you're worried about Apple hardware design, you must not be a big fan of Apple. They haven't gotten it wrong yet.

(No one post some picture of some odd device from 20 years ago....)

Apple Store.

The carriers get a paltry amount of inventory compared. Also, it's much more fun at the Apple Stores.

The times I've been in line by myself, this hasn't been a problem. The people in line around me always hold me spot when I run off to hit the restroom or grab food or whatever.

I'm not interested in camping out like many here. However, most of those who don't sound like snobs, going out of their way to point out how idiotic they think it is; and those that do camp out seem to go out of their way to calmly explain how they ENJOY the event, even though they understand it's not for everyone.

The next time I drive by the apple store on launch day and see the lines of happy campers, anxiously waiting for their shiny new phones, I will remember this conversation and look at them with a newly found respect.:)

I never even asked. Didn't want to bother people I don't know with that. I'm sure the couple that arrived after me would have done it. I just felt funny about asking them.
