Having used other 400-500g tablets, I already knew what to expect with the Air. Sure, it does feel light when you first hold it - definitely much lighter compared to the iPad 3&4. However, it's still likely to cause wrist/arm fatigue with prolonged single-handed operation.

Yeah, when I called them "bricks" I was paid shills? You stupid!
Have you checked all my posts here before opening your mouth, jeez! Read before speak!:mad:

Relax, anyone who speaks against the iPad here is considered a spy from Samsung and is considered...what's the word?...oh yeah 'evil.'

I haven't held the iPad 5/Air or whatever it's called now, but if you think it's too 'heavy' maybe you need to hit the gym?

wrist arm fatigue:rolleyes:, what are you standing up holding it in one hand watching a movie for 90 minutes. Or do you hold it in one hand and switch apps with the same hand? like to see that.

As someone who's used the iPad 2 every day for the past 2 years, the weight difference in the iPad Air is incredible. That 1/3 pound they took off makes all the difference to me.

Reading for hours on end and just tap with the thumb to turn pages (use Marvin and I've set taps on left and right side to go to the next page).

I was actually laughing at those Samsung users in the first post, very relax :)

My point was, some of them might still think Air is heavy, but for me, even if it is lighter, I don't want a plastic brick :)

I built up my biceps using an iPad 4, and the Air feels like a sheet of paper to me. :D
P.S. Not bad for a guy that just turned 52... Now get to the gym! :D

Well, regardless of anyone thinking Samsung tablets are lighter, the simple fact is they're not. The lightest 10" Samsung tablet is the latest version, the Note 10.1 (2014) and it's still a full 71 grams heavier, plastic back and all. All of the older models are heavier, ranging up to 600 grams (vs. 469 for the iPad Air). I've personally owned both the Note 10.1 (2014) and the iPad Air and can attest that the Air feels noticeably lighter.

I'd guess the older gentleman described in the first post has a 7" or 8" Samsung tablet so, of course it'll feel lighter. If not, he simply doesn't have a clue what he's talking about.

Not impressed by the weight savings in the iPad Air? Don't know what to tell you because numbers don't lie and it's pretty significant. It shaved off 183 grams of weight vs. the iPad 4, or nearly 30% (28% to be exact). That's equivalent to a 200 lbs. man losing 56 lbs!

I was at the Apple Store Beverly Center today looking at the new rMBPs...

An older gentleman was using one of the Airs on display and asked one of the employees if he could see any of those 'new ipad Airs' on display...when the employee told him he was actually holding one in his hands he replied 'this is the Air? It's pretty heavy...! I have a samsung tablet and it's much lighter than this'

Which got me thinking...there ARE brief moments while using my air where I actually do think it's a bit heavy...maybe because I've been using my mini this whole past year...?

The way the media (and Apple) was touting the Air as incredibly light, I was a bit disappointed the first time I held my Air...not saying it's heavy, but I didn't have the same 'wow' impression I thought I would
Might want to hit the gym.

I can assure you I'm no Samsung shill as you call it.

From the Apple II-E to the original blue iMac, to PowerBooks to Mac minis, iPods, iPhones, iPads...I've been using Apple products my whole life, and consider myself a loyal fan. :apple:

My post was simply to share my insights on the new Air, and to hopefully listen to everyone else's as well...

I Absolutely love my iPad Air!!! :D

iPad air is much lighter for sure! However, it is slight heavier than iPad Mini. My iPad 4 is much much heavier, but feels stronger. So, ... oh well. I like my new air for sure :D and plan to get iPad Mini with Retina later.

Lying in bed holding the tablet above my face, actually. Works well enough with the iPod Touch/iPhone/iPad Mini. The Air, however, still isn't light enough for me.

That just sounds so awkward I wouldn't even try. Even if the iPad was as light as a piece of cardboard, I think holding something that big in that position will quickly get tiring. In fact, I've never attempted to do that with the mini, either. It's too wide for me to grip comfortably wth one hand in that angle.

Hard to really make anything of what the guy said when we don't know what Samsung he had. Like others posted, at its size, the air is the lightest. Of course a smaller tablet may be lighter but that's like saying my iphone is lighter than any small android tablet. They aren't the same thing. Coming from a mini and still having one laying around, the air is light.

i own an iPad 3 and the iPad Air is insanely light

however i am still holding out for the iPad Mini Retina

The Air feels lighter than expected, even in the smart case.

After moving from a 15" MBP and iPad3 to a 13" MacBook Air and a new iPad Air, my backpack has never been lighter.

What does that guy want? An iPad Weight accessory to hold down his iPad Air so it doesn't blow away in the breeze?

Show me any Samsung tablet that is that light and thin, made of freaking metal, with a processor that fast, and a screen of that size. I got to hold one for the first time yesterday and yes, it is much lighter than even the iPad 2 that I'm used to (which was a little lighter than the next two). Even with the security device on the back at Best Buy it was noticeably light. That being said, I'm still getting the new Mini.

Going back to my original statement, does anyone actually think that will be a first world problem in the future? Someone's iPad blows out of their hand and down the street. I guess there's always Find My iPad.

I thought the same thing. Also thought the same about portability. Wasn't nearly as portable as the hype leads you to believe. I had an iPad 4 then a mini then the air and when I first picked up the air I was like "really? Come on now". Lighter is the word. Not light.

But how much can I really complain? They made something lighter, smaller AND more powerful while maintaining the same or better battery life. That's some impressive engineering right there

Of course it's light, it's the lightest (circa) 10" display tablet you can buy AFAIK. The bigger point to make though is that it's not flimsy with it but still feels solid.

An older gentleman was using one of the Airs on display and asked one of the employees if he could see any of those 'new ipad Airs' on display...when the employee told him he was actually holding one in his hands he replied 'this is the Air? Morons like this get on my nerves. "I have a Samsung tablet and it's much lighter"?! Well if so then it's a smaller device so it's not comparable, is it? Samsung's 10" tablets weigh more than the Air.

Also, most competing products seem to feel ridiculously flimsy. Most Android tablets I've handled feel cheap and "plasticy" compared to an iPad. The Samsung Galaxy S4 phone feels like the cheapest, nastiest, flimsiest piece of plastic junk I've ever held in my hand and it staggers me that anyone find such quality acceptable, especially when HTC have shown how it should be done with the HTC One, which can actually compete with the iPhone on build quality.

I've also noticed that Amazon are having a bit of a poke at Apple with their forthcoming Fire HDX, using the tag line "lighter than Air" (or some such). Yet again, it's a smaller screen device so hardly comparable, plus I bet it'll feel plastic and cheap compared to an iPad.

This is what strikes me about Apple. With both the iPhone 5 and now the iPad Air, they've managed to significantly reduce the size and weight of the products but whilst still maintaining totally solid build quality. Other manufacturers only seem capable of reducing weight by using cheaper materials that make the products feel cheaper as a result.
