I had the Ultra 1 and I hated it.

Quit sticking your head in the sand. The sum total of what you’re saying is basically “I don’t believe the speed improvements are significant” . I have both, and the Ultra 2 is more than 30% faster in many areas. There are more bottlenecks than CPU speed which have been fixed.

Dude, I am not arguing that it isn't a better watch, of course it is. But no one else anywhere, in this this very thread, even reviewers that usually just praise whatever Apple does, is claiming improvements like you are. I bought my wife a Series 9, and have tried it a bit, haven't felt anything significant different.

And by the way, I buy a lot of stuff just because I feel like and usually don't feel any need to justify - I ended up upgrading from an iPhone 14 Pro Max to an iPhone 15 Pro Max and the experience is pretty much the same but what the heck I'm happy with my purchase. I also own both a Surface Pro 8 and an iPad Pro 2022, PS5 and Xbox Series X, etc, you name it. So the point I was trying to make is I'm not really someone who justifies my decision to buy or not tech,

Good you're seeing improvements meaningful to you, but I do think some of your claims are quite exaggerated.

Ok, so tell me what how you use your watch. I’ve already listed what I do. Lets see if you’re another person who basically does nothing with their watch and doesn’t notice any speed improvements.

But if you have both the Series 8 and 9 do this one test. Open maps in each when away from your iPhone and click your current location. The Series 9 will find it about 90% faster.

It’s only been a day since the new watches were launched. There will be a lot more observations coming.

I was not going to but bought mine yesterday and have no regrets. Might be my imagination but Siri is much more responsive. My brother‘s birthday was coming up so he will get the Ultra 1 and be very happy.

You people that did, do not have to substantiate why, to anyone.

Enjoy!

So, anyone that updated to UW1 to UW2 noticed the difference in brightness? Happy that you did the upgrade. Think I will upgrade too, since the UW1 trade in value at Apple is decent. Thanks!

I do in both AOD mode and in darker environments (and in the early morning), and I really, really do not like it. It is too dim for my taste.

I did upgrade after deciding not upgrading it :)😁 due to like you said the trade in value is decent and next year trade in for ultra 1 will drop in half of what offered now.

Is there any way to stop it from dimming that much? Does the brightness make a difference outside?

I traded in my Ultra for a 2 today. Why? Pretty good trade in price for the Ultra.

First big chip change in quite some time, so I think the Ultra 2 will be future proofed a little bit longer.

If I keep the new watch for 2 years, after trade in, it's only costing about .57 cents a day to use. Pretty cheap in my book for something I use every day.

And hey... I was going to buy a new strap. With the trade in and saved strap cost, getting a new one was really only about $300.

Bottom line...I kinda just felt like it. :)
You mentioned some of my reasons for upgrading. If the trade-in had been lower, I probably wouldn't have done it.

Well stock prices are DEFINITELY much faster with the new processor. And if you use Siri to do any of those, they are lightning quick now. Way more than 30% faster.

So you decide not to upgrade to the Ultra 2 and yet you visited the ”Who Upgraded from Ultra 1 to 2 Thread”. Presumably to make yourself feel better about not upgrading. And when confronted with someone who says that the upgrade was significant. Your reply is “Your must be lying”. Yeah, we’ll see.

Nah, I actually like reading different opinions in a forum. I can upgrade at any time, is not like I missed my boat. One thing I have never wished for is that stocks would load faster, even in my Series 5 it’s almost immediate, which is why I think something must’ve been wrong with your configuration.

Just thought your opinion was interesting as it contradicts what pretty much what everyone else is saying.

No one is denying it’s better, it IS. Glad for your use you’re perceiving such notable improvements. Enjoy your Watch

Yeah, it’s definitely noticeably brighter than the ultra one and I like that and it does seem a lot faster as well. It’s a great watch and for me it was well worth the upgrade from the ultra one

It’s long been a trend with reviewers to not recommend owners of the most recent iteration NOT upgrade to the new item. If you look at iPhone 15 Pro reviews. EVERY reviewer said it was a minor bump for iPhone 14 Pro owners and that they shouldn’t upgrade. They applied this same template to the Apple Watch.

So did the reviewers say the Ultra 2 was a minor bump? Yeah. Am I surprised? NO.

Only with the watch it’s even worse because most tech writers just use their watch to tell the time and read message notifications. They don’t actually know how to review a watch.

I will concede that I’m a heavy Siri user. And the upgrade means much more to someone like me than to someone like you.

No. I have the watch on max brightness. Any of the ambient lighting stuff is uncontrollable.

Yep. Dcrainnaker and Desfit don't know how to review watches but you do. Comical.

I upgrade every year. Love the new SiP on the AWU2 and the brighter up to 3,000 nits display is gorgeous. It’s a bit of an incremental update, but for me it’s definitely noticeable and totally worth it.

Looks like you’re trying too hard to justify staying with the old watch. And most reviewers aren’t heavy watch users. Plus, they bend over backwards to help people not feel bad about not upgrading.

Nobody has to justify a decision; they simply chose what works best for them. Unless a new watch has some must have feature, and faster/more powerful isn't always must have, there is no reason beyond "I want it" to upgrade.

Different apps respond differently to different improvements. It used to drive me crazy how Apple podcasters would say “I never felt the current watch was slow”. I’m thinking have you EVER pulled up a map and tried to get your current location? Have you ever asked Siri to fast forward through a podcast commercial. These everyday tasks are much faster now.

Not everyone uses Siri, and I bet most people would pull up maps on an iPhone before using their watch; since they are likely to have it with them at the same time. It's all a matter of use case. I use mine as a watch 90% of the time, and the rest to check mail and messages, set alarms, save boarding passes when traveling, and get driving direction haptic clues. Speed is not an issue for that use case; ours may differ.

Would I upgrade? Depends on the cost. The one challenge is AW's don't get much trade in relative to the initial costs, making yearly upgrades expensive even with my discount; which makes the cost/benefit ratio worse for me.

that was and still is true for regular AW, with the Ultra, Apple is offering $380 trade-in (and you get to keep puck and band) which was a big reason for me to upgrade to Ultra2.
and is also the reason I still have my S4 SBSS and my S7 Ti ...

I ended up upgrading. Why not when the trade in value at Apple is decent for a watch? Next year my AW1 would probably be worth 1/2 or less of what it is today and with the military discount on the watch makes it even better.
