I have an odd question for all of you. Back in the day, I used to watch Kimba and Speed Racer, both Japanese cartoons. Are either of these considered anime?
Yes, both. Very old, and at least in the case of Speed Racer also very bad (never seen Kimba so no opinion), but still anime. All that's required is the basic visual style and usually a particular style of story structure, but they're also both produced in Japan.
Maybe it's not even the art style but the poor translations and the way everyone talks reallyreallyreally fast in most of them.
Just curious if the bad translations and hyperactive speech is from dubbed or subtitled anime. I ask because many dubs these days are quite well done both in terms of writing and dialogue. Subtitles are drastically more accurate than they used to be, but the writing is often shaky (especially fansubs), and Japanese can sound speedy if you're not used to it.
I do note, however, that Japanese really does sound like that. Not as many high pitched voices (though WAY more than you'd think) in real life, but the dialogue in a lot of anime (not all, of course) is more true to life than you'd expect if you didn't speak some of the language.
As for the original question, no avatar (3,500 posts, just never bothered) but yes:
Akemi's Anime World. Though for someone who's written 200 reviews I watch a lot less than you'd think--I get together with friends once a week for a few hours and that's basically it, and I don't keep up on what's hot or new at ALL.
Currently watching through Daphne of the Brilliant Blue, which is awesome and a half surprisingly enough, Someday's Dreamers, Rumiko Takahashi Anthology, and Crest of the Stars.
Personal favorites are Nausicaa, Kiki's Delivery Service, Jubei-chan the Ninja Girl, Boogiepop Phantom, Heidi, Urusei Yatsura, and Tenchi Muyo (OAVs
only).
Never posted in one of these threads before, but I was actually searching because I've always wanted to do a Mac-related section of my site, but never mustered the time and effort involved, so I'm wondering if there are any other dual-fans out there who'd be interested in maybe working on something of the sort...
